The model for the work was provided by the legend around the tragic fate of the Ancient Roman hero Coriolanus. Beethoven was referring to the very popular tragedy of the time with the same name by the Austrian writer Heinrich Joseph von Collin. Yet he only composed the overture in 1807, at a time when the play had long since been taken off the programme. Apparently it no longer mattered to the composer whether his music was played in conjunction with the play or not – and he thus wrote one of the earliest and to date best-loved concert overtures in musical history. The text of the Beethoven Complete edition was carefully reviewed for the study edition and there is a new preface.

Ludwig van Beethoven conquered the musical city of Vienna as a pianist, creating outstanding works for his instrument. These also include his five piano concertos. “The farewell / Vienna, May 4, 1809 / on the departure of his Imperial Highness the revered Archduke Rudolph” – Beethoven added this inscription to the manuscript of this sonata. It is today known by its French title “les Adieux” and numbers amongst the composer’s best-loved piano works. The first movement of the sonata was presumably written directly before the archduke hurriedly left Vienna. Rudolph and other members of the imperial family fled to Hungary to avoid having to endure the French troops’ siege and conquest. On his return in January 1810, Beethoven was able to present him with the complete sonata, having written not only the “farewell”; but also “absence” and “return”.

The autograph of Beethoven’s Bagatellen op. 33 mentions the year 1782 in its title. The date, and the fact that Beethoven amended it, have led to a number of speculations concerning the time of its genesis. What is certain is that the seven pieces were not completed until about the end of 1802. Beethoven seems to have compiled several earlier pieces, revised them one last time, then gave them to the publishers. The first edition was issued in May 1803 – and today’s pianists are still just as enthusiastic about these little gems as they are about many of Beethoven’s other major or minor masterpieces.

Attention, string quartet players: the long wait is over! Henle launches its series of late Beethoven quartets with op. 131 in c sharp minor and op. 132 in a minor, using the definitive urtext from the Beethoven Gesamtausgabe. It need hardly be added that great care was taken to find sensible page turns. The quartets will also appear simultaneously in miniature scores with exactly the same text and commentary. There are still little, unknown gems to be found by even the greatest and most famous names in music history. This charming, short duo in two movements will delight flautists: Neither flute part is technically very demanding and it is therefore well-suited as easy teaching material. The dedication “for friend Degenharth” (a lawyer amongst Beethoven’s close circle of friends) leaves open whether it was commissioned or a gift. The work was not published during Beethoven’s lifetime, but the autograph has survived. This edition follows the musical text in the Beethoven Complete Edition and offers Urtext in customary Henle quality.

Carl Czerny wrote the following about Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Grande Sonate” op. 7, published in 1797: “The epithet appassionata would fit much better to the Sonata in E flat op. 7, which he wrote in a very impassioned mood”. As to whether the reason behind his passionate music was the composer’s attraction for his then 16-year-old pupil Anna Luise Barbara Countess von Keglevich remains open. It might be that the dedicatee’s father commissioned Beethoven to write the work for his daughter. We are publishing the sonata in a revised single edition by Norbert Gertsch and Murray Perahia – the introduction and fingerings were provided by the latter, one of the foremost interpreters of Beethoven’s piano music.

For decades, the two-volume Henle Urtext edition of Beethoven’s piano sonatas has maintained its status across the globe as the standard edition of reference among pianists. After its publication at the beginning of the 1950s, edited by the Munich musicologist Bertha Antonia Wallner – with the support of the Beethoven Archive in Bonn – this outstanding editorial achievement was quickly recognised by the world of pianists as a new benchmark. Its decades-long, rigorous field testing led to improvements and refinements such that this Henle Urtext edition of Beethoven’s piano sonatas is universally regarded today as the reference source. The printed fingerings provided by the pianist and important musical pedagogue Conrad Hansen are regarded as meaningful suggestions for solving technical and musical problems: “as few fingerings as possible, albeit instructive ones” (Hansen). G. Henle Publishers also offers the Beethoven sonatas in an alternative Urtext print edition without any fingerings (HN 1032 and HN 1034), as well as a pocket score in our study score series (HN 9032 and HN 9034) And interested parties may also find the sonatas in the digital version in the “Henle Library” app, here in conjunction with a variety of subjective, selectable fingerings by the likes of Eugen d’Albert; Claudio Arrau, Conrad Hansen and Artur Schnabel. Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas unfurl before us a virtually inexhaustible wealth of pianistic and musical flights of fancy, predominantly works of the greatest familiarity in piano lessons, concert halls, and recordings. Hans von Bülow emphasised the importance and significance of Beethoven’s piano sonatas with his bon mot that they constituted the “New Testament of music.” The 32 sonatas with opus numbers are a conscious choice; the three “Electoral” Sonatas by the thirteen-year-old boy, WoO 47, are not included in the “New Testament.” These are available from Henle in a separate Urtext edition (HN 255). G. Henle Publishers also offers every Beethoven sonata as a standalone Urtext edition (in print or in the app).
