A comprehensive monograph on the Swiss artist whose work has recently become known on the international scene. Art that understands itself as politically motivated is at present quite frequently falling back on documentary forms of art. The claim usually leading to a documentary comprises criteria of objectivity and truthfulness, of re-presentation in a mimetic sense; the attempt is made to come as close as possible to reality, while omitting personal filters. The documentary method, which can make use of visual, textual, oral, or audio means, reveals in a reflective way the manner in which the documentary work originated and was produced. Documentary working methods in the field of art currently take on two opposite functions: On the one hand, they stand for a strategy of authenticity that is to ensure the artworks' claim to establish contact with the aural sphere of the social or political; on the other hand, they perceive their own means as socially constructed ones, as epistemological tools with which not the truth of politics but the "politics of truth" are to be changed. * * The book "The Need to Document" attempts to make out the backgrounds leading to this turn towards documentation, as well as the thematic focuses and concerns associated with this new documentary stance. The origins of the collection of the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst date from the late 1950s, it initiated by the migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler; and, in the late 1970s, began concentrating on collecting international contemporary art. This publication offers a wide overview focusing on the core pieces of the collection, which consists of around 400 artworks by international and Swiss contemporary artists such as Art & Language, Maurizio Cattelan, Christopher Wool, Katharina Sieverding, Rachel Harrison, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Christoph Büchel, Paul Thek, and Douglas Gordon. * * The large-scale illustrations are accompanied with texts by writers such as Tom Holert, Tirdad Zolghadr, and Jan Verwoert, reflecting different museums and collection strategies, and referring in particular to the history of the museum which was founded in 1996. Questions of changing values and shifting identities in the wake of globalization play an important role for the current generation of young artists. The group exhibition "Shifting Identities—(Swiss) Art Now" is dedicated to this theme and shows a total of 68 artists who address it in very different ways.
