The solo parts of this wonderful Double Concerto for two violins and orchestra survive in a faultless fair copy by Bach that was made around 1730. The slow movement is regarded as a melodic high point of the composer’s output. With the two solo violins on an equal footing, the concerto amply deserves its position as one of Bach’s most often-played and popular works.

Bach’s E major Violin Concerto has survived solely in the form of a copy, but in view of its significant compositional substance, and of Bach’s arrangement (which has come down to us as an autograph) for harpsichord and orchestra, the work’s authenticity is beyond question. The highly expressive violin melody in the second movement speaks for itself: the harpsichord version cannot provide a real replacement for it.

Of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s flute concertos, the one in d minor is by far the best known, even though its authenticity has been repeatedly doubted. A version of the same concerto for harpsichord and orchestra is “genuine C.P.E.” and this has always been regarded as the original version. An in-depth study of all source findings does, however, suggest that Bach composed the flute version first. Our editor, the flautist András Adorján, is thus able to present a musical text in which many transmission errors have been eliminated. The edition is rounded off by a preface from the C.P.E. Bach specialist Wolfram Ensslin.

For the editor of an Urtext edition, Bach’s A minor violin concerto BWV 1041 presents few problems; cleanly-written original parts exist from Bach’s Köthen (or early Leipzig) period. But beyond the guarantee of a reliable musical text, the Henle edition scores points in terms of text layout; thanks to a foldout solo part, turning pages is made comfortable, something that was previously a challenge because of the literally non-stop, continuous sixteenth notes in the opening movement. Other publishers have since copied this idea. Only the piano reduction from Henle – in all three of Bach’s violin concertos – can be effortlessly performed off the page, even by the lay musician.

The Bach family of musicians comprises a dynasty that effectively spanned more than 200 years of composition. Johann Sebastian stands at the top of the hierarchy, but what do we know about the family's other members? This release offers us a chance to become acquainted with the work of the German maestro's four sons, revealing the ample talent of a generation that played a crucial role in further advancing music's development over the course of the 18th century. The collection begins with Carl Philipp Emanuel, the most boldly innovative and original, best known for his large collection of harpsichord works (it is therefore refreshing to hear some of his other music on this set, namely his Berlin and Hamburg Symphonies, his Flute Concertos and works for organ). From CD5 the youngest son, Johann Christian, takes over the musical reins, his distinct, Classical-bound style (no doubt influenced by his studies in Italy) much in evidence in his Sinfonia Concertante (here are four of the 18 he wrote) and his Six Sonatas Op.5 -- the first publication to mention both the fortepiano, of which he was a great champion, and harpsichord as performance options. From the youngest son to the eldest: the set moves on to Wilhelm Friedemann, one of the main forerunners of the Empfindsamkeit. And yet contemporary critics took an ill-judged view of his music, seeing him a continuation of his father and not enough of a clean break -- something which this set, featuring his radical harpsichord concertos, is able to refute. The compilation concludes with a CD devoted to the music of Johann Christoph Bach, without doubt the least-known of the Bach sons. Probably the least progressive, too, his music still reflects the stylistic developments of the latter half of the 18th century -- his Symphony in B flat HW1 No.20, for example, written a few months before his death in 1795, assimilates elements of the prevailing Viennese style. At a bargain EUR22, this 10CD box should not be forgone. The release features an array of period-performance ensembles and artists who have made the music of Bach their primary study -- such names include the 'Kammerorchester Carl Philipp Emanuel' under esteemed director Haenchen and the renowned Leipzig group Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum. Aside from the five great piano concertos, it is easy to forget that Beethoven had already turned to this genre in Bonn during his youth. The Concerto in Eb, written in 1784, still shows stylistic signs of the influence of Johann Christian Bach’s works. A score of this concerto has not survived; all that remains is a copy of a piano part that was revised by Beethoven. It contains the solo part without any orchestral accompaniment; however, when the piano is silent and orchestral tutti passages are interposed, it incorporates a piano reduction of the orchestral part. Following the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition, the piano concerto can now be performed in its surviving form – by a pianist without an orchestra.

Der Text der Kantate Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen BWV 32 für den 1. Sonntag nach Epiphanias 1726 stammt von dem Darmstädter Dichter Georg Christian Lehms. Der Text ist angelegt als ein Dialog zwischen Jesus und der gläubigen Seele. Bach überschreibt seine Kantate als "Concerto in Dialogo" und gestaltet sie entsprechend als Dialog von Sopran und Bass, in den beiden typischerweise (nicht nur bei Bach) für die Seele (Sopran) und Jesus (Bass) stehenden Stimmlagen. Der Kantate liegt die Geschichte des zwölfjährigen Jesus im Tempel zugrunde, die jedoch - trotz enger Anlehnung an den Evangelientext - hier weiter gedeutet wird: Mit Jesus findet der Gläubige Gottes Wohnung. Bach spannt einen grossen Bogen von einer sehnend-suchenden Eingangsarie bis hin zum freudigen Duett "Nun verschwinden alle Plagen". Den vierstimmigen Schlusschoral hat Bach seiner Textvorlage hinzugefügt und überträgt damit die freudige Gewissheit in die Gemeinde der Gläubigen.
