Who can be powerful and when? Power is a function of network and organizational characteristics and therefore denies an actor (e.g. a NGO or trade union) to be powerful in all networks. To prove this idea, power and institutional theories as well as organizational models will come into use while proposing different types of power factors. Such factors include combinations of organizational and network characteristics that combine to produce high power synergy and low inconsistency. The first dimension of power is trust: the trustee leads the one who trusts. The second dimension is financial incentive: the gift giver influences the gift receiver. The third dimension is irreplaceability. The typology of power factors (organizational and network characteristics) was derived from both inductive and deductive processes. By using statistics-based vector algebra as a basis for the methodology, a survey covering 12 environmental policy networks in 8 European countries was conducted and more knowledge on power was obtained.

Wood exhibits a hierarchically built anatomy with a directed and at most open pore structure on the micro- and macrometer level. This open porous system makes wood an interesting raw material for conversion into ceramic materials by different infiltration reaction techniques. The present study was concentrated on the conversion of different kinds of wood into biocarbon templates following by conversion of biocarbon templates via different vapor phase infiltration methods (SiO-vapor, Si-vapor or H2/CH3SiCl3-gas mixture) into highly porous single phase, biomorphous SiC-ceramics. The mechanisms and kinetics of the silicon carbide formation during different vapor phase infiltration of porous biocarbon templates as well as the mechanical properties (bending and compression strength) were analyzed with respect of orientation, fractional density and strut microstructure in order to design the microstructure of the biomorphous silicon carbide ceramics.

Since independence in 1991, issues of nation and identity have become highly debated topics in Ukraine. This monograph explores not only how national identity is being (re)constructed by the Ukrainian state, but also the processes by which it is negotiated through society. The central argument of this work is that too much attention, concerning identity in Ukraine, has focused on markers of ethnicity and language. Instead, the author advocates a regional approach, engaging with the issue of how Ukraine’s regional differences affect nation-building processes. Following the tumultuous events of the ‘Orange Revolution’; the view of Ukraine as a country inherently ‘divided’ between ‘East’ and ‘West’ has (re)emerged to become a popular explanation for political events. The study outlines the necessity for academics, policymakers and indeed politicians to veer away from this simplistic ‘West versus East’ divide. The book advocates an analysis of Ukraine’s unique brand of regionalism not in terms of divisions, but in terms of regional differences and diversity. The author deconstructs the concept of ‘Eastern Ukraine’ by focusing on three Ukrainian localities, all adjacent to the Ukrainian-Russian border. The study examines how individuals provide ‘their’ own understanding of the place of their region within the wider processes of nation building across Ukraine. In doing so, the book develops a ‘regional’ approach to the study of identity politics in Ukraine.

In five linked essays, Romanets explores, in their sociocultural contexts, the works of Kostenko, Ní Dhomhnaill, Zabuzhko, Pokalchuk, Vynnychuk, Poderviansky, Longley, Heaney, Murphy, Carson, Montague, Banville, and Izdryk. She examines the ways these authors evoke the significatory powers of their traditions to forge imaginary ones; interrogate the boundaries and slippages among personal, national, social, gendered, and historical disjunctions; and make every history open to revision and contestation. Since their discovery in 1986, high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) are considered interesting physical systems as well as attractive candidates for a variety of technical applications. In both cases one of the key aspects to be understood is the mechanism of power dissipation, which depends primarily on vortex dynamics: the movement of magnetic flux lines in the superconductor when a transport current is applied. The present work studies vortex dynamics in experiments on two of the most prominent types of HTSC materials, YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (BSCCO), in the limit of low and high current densities. Both, the applied transport current density and the dimensionality of the materials, strongly influence the dynamic response. For the low current limit in BSCCO this thesis concentrates on the influence of oxygen stoichiometry and in YBCO on a vortex glass phase, which indicates a true superconducting state with vanishing linear resistivity. In the high current limit, for the first time, a vortex instability is shown to exist in BSCCO, apparently arising from a fluid phase, while a similar phenomenon in YBCO reveals a clear correlation of the high-dissipative instability to the low-dissipative vortex glass phase. The author: A native of Hamburg, Germany, Patrick Voss-de Haan studied physics at Stanford University and the University of Mainz. After completing a degree in the area of atomic physics and laser spectroscopy he began his work in solid state physics and superconductors, from which this Ph.D. thesis was compiled.

This monograph is devoted to ‘Mother Russia’ as a principal concept of Russian nationalism. The volume demonstrates the role of the mythology of ‘Mother Russia’ in inventing and reinventing Russianness, in producing Ours and Theirs, in constructing external and internal Enemies, in legitimating and delegitimating power within the political system of Russia. Chapter I ‘Nationalism; Gender, and War: A Methodological Framework’ starts with definitions of the study’s key terms – gender, nationalism, identity, and discourse. Interpreting gender as a referential, context-dependent and heterogeneous phenomenon as well as showing its implication in power relations, the author demonstrates that all principal concepts of nationalism as a discursive formation intersect with gender discourse. This, on the one hand, comes about through the role of nationalism in the formation of gender order during Modernity, and, on the other hand, through the potential of gender to serve as an effective marker facilitating the process of inclusion and exclusion in the making of collective identity. The author argues that gender discourse serves as a weapon of war, playing an important role in national mobilization, as well as in the assertion of supremacy in war, both militarily and morally. The aim of Chapter II ‘“Mother Russia” Through the Lenses of Postcolonial Studies’ is a general explanation of the symbol. ‘Mother Russia’ is rooted in a myth-symbol complex of Russian culture. At the same time, it has also been developed under the influence of the discourse on Modernity that has divided the world into ‘the West and the Rest’. In Western culture, ‘Mother Russia’ serves as a ‘symbolic border-guard’ between a ‘masculine’ West and ‘feminine’ Russia. ‘Mother Russia’ keeps functioning as a factor of the identity of the West in the post-Cold War era. Contemporary Western mass media actively exploits this symbol to mark a border of the West and to designate Russia as irrational, archaic, chaotic, mysterious, unpredictable, and passive. In Russian culture, the development of ‘Mother Russia’ is, to a considerable extent, a reaction to these practices of her ‘othering’ within Western discourse. The idea of the femininity of Russia is accepted, first of all, in the ‘messianic’ discourse, which treats Russia as the savior of the West and of all humankind. The author shows that some other non-Western cultures use the similar ‘authofeminization’ accompanied by a representation of the Western civilization as extremely masculine, ‘dangerous masculine’. The symbol is exploited in the politics of identity of Russian nationalism to provide unity for the Russian nation. By determining ‘Ours’; the discourse on ‘Mother Russia’ also produces Enemies both in national and gender dimensions.
