Despite socialism's best efforts, ethnic identity remained a salient feature in Central and Eastern Europe. Not only did ethno-nationalism help to bring about the fall of the socialist regimes in this region, but it also characterised much of the post-socialist politics. Nation-Building and Minority Politics examines the issue of minority politics in post-socialist states within this dual structure. In particular, it offers an in-depth analysis of post-restoration politics in Estonia and Latvia, covering four issues. First, it looks at the historical context of the current group relations. Second, the study explores the domestic nature of minority politics in Estonia and Latvia by looking at domestic politics and policies. Third, it examines the role of the Russian Federation as an 'external national homeland' through illustrating developments within Russian foreign policy. Finally, the book analyses the role of three significant European organisations, namely the OSCE, EU and the Council of Europe as agents of 'conditionality'. Overall, this study combines old and new theoretical approaches to nation-building and minority politics to exhibit the changing nature of the relationship between majority, minority, external national homeland, and international organisations in today's Europe.

The protection of minorities in Bulgaria presents a paradox. Although minority protection played a prominent role in the accession of the country to the European Union, hardly any positive minority rights were adopted in post-communist Bulgaria. Apart from the reversal of communist assimilation campaigns, only limited progress has been made in the area of minority protection. Positive minority rights have remained very restricted, some minorities, notably Pomaks and Macedonians, have been denied recognition, and the formal adoption of legislation or policy documents has often not been followed by implementation. By charting minority rights policies in Bulgaria in the period between 1989 and 2004, this study clarifies the main reasons for the limited progress in the post-communist period. While, in contrast to some other countries in Central and Eastern Europe, minority “kin-states” did not play a major role in post-communist Bulgaria, the European Union and the Council of Europe were instrumental in putting minority questions on the agenda of Bulgarian governments. However, their impact was smaller than much of the literature on enlargement and conditionality would suggest. Domestic factors were crucial in shaping minority rights policies in post-communist Bulgaria. Of particular importance was the communist legacy, which acted as a brake on the development of minority rights.

Ausgehend von soziologischen Theorien und anhand zweier anschaulicher Fallanalysen von UN-Einsätzen analysiert Simone Mager in ihrer vorliegenden Studie die wechselhafte Politik der UN und erklärt die Ursachen des Pendelns der Vereinten Nationen zwischen Friedenserhaltung auf der einen und (gewaltsamer) Friedensdurchsetzung auf der anderen Seite sowie das gelegentliche Abgleiten von UN-Soldaten in Gewaltexzesse. Auf Basis ihrer empirischen Analyse zieht sie theoretische Schlussfolgerungen, die über die bisherigen Forschungsergebnisse zur soziologischen Ambivalenz hinausgehen, und leistet somit einen neuen, wichtigen Beitrag zur Soziologie internationaler Institutionen. In einem klaren Stil und mit Entfaltung empirisch anschaulichen Materials entwickelt Simone Mager Vorstellungen, wie sich die Vereinten Nationen verändern sollten, um ihre Pendelpolitik zu vermeiden.

Since independence in 1991, issues of nation and identity have become highly debated topics in Ukraine. This monograph explores not only how national identity is being (re)constructed by the Ukrainian state, but also the processes by which it is negotiated through society. The central argument of this work is that too much attention, concerning identity in Ukraine, has focused on markers of ethnicity and language. Instead, the author advocates a regional approach, engaging with the issue of how Ukraine’s regional differences affect nation-building processes. Following the tumultuous events of the ‘Orange Revolution’; the view of Ukraine as a country inherently ‘divided’ between ‘East’ and ‘West’ has (re)emerged to become a popular explanation for political events. The study outlines the necessity for academics, policymakers and indeed politicians to veer away from this simplistic ‘West versus East’ divide. The book advocates an analysis of Ukraine’s unique brand of regionalism not in terms of divisions, but in terms of regional differences and diversity. The author deconstructs the concept of ‘Eastern Ukraine’ by focusing on three Ukrainian localities, all adjacent to the Ukrainian-Russian border. The study examines how individuals provide ‘their’ own understanding of the place of their region within the wider processes of nation building across Ukraine. In doing so, the book develops a ‘regional’ approach to the study of identity politics in Ukraine.

Die Zaporoger Kosaken stehen heute im Zentrum des ukrainischen nationalen Diskurses. Der Kosak gilt als die Inkarnation des Ukrainers schlechthin. Er wird als Träger der nationalen Eigenschaften, der ukrainischen Volksseele verstanden. Darüber hinaus gilt ein Teil der Kosakenära als Goldenes Zeitalter der ukrainischen Geschichte: Im Versuch, eine Kontinuität ukrainischer Staatlichkeit bis zurück in die Zeit der mittelalterlichen Kiever Rus' herzustellen, wird das Hetmanat des 17. Jahrhunderts als ukrainischer Staat interpretiert. Das Museum der Geschichte des Zaporoger Kosakentums im ostukrainischen Zaporižžja befindet sich auf der als Nationalheiligtum geltenden Dnipro-Insel Chortycja. Das vorliegende Buch ist die erste wissenschaftliche Studie über dieses Museum. Sie geht seiner wechselvollen Geschichte seit der Šelest-Ära in den 1960er Jahren nach und untersucht die aktuelle Museumsausstellung darauf, welche Elemente des ukrainischen nationalen Diskurses in ihr auf welche Weise umgesetzt werden. Welche Elemente fehlen? Wie wird in einer von nationaler Indifferenz geprägten ostukrainischen Umgebung das zentrale Motiv des nationalen Diskurses behandelt? Wie geht man mit dem allgegenwärtigen sowjetischen Erbe um, das das ganze Museum prägt? Illustriert wird die Untersuchung mit Photographien aus der Museumsausstellung. Im Anhang dieses Buches werden erstmals Quellen aus dem Museum der Geschichte des Zaporoger Kosakentums veröffentlicht. Auch findet sich hier die erste deutschsprachige Veröffentlichung der Thesen über den 300. Jahrestag der Wiedervereinigung der Ukraine mit Russland des ZK der KPdSU, einer wichtigen Quelle für die sowjetische Interpretation speziell der ukrainischen Geschichte.

Furthermore, this reading uncovers Joyce’s conception of national identity as increasingly sophisticated and complicated after Irish independence was won. From here, Halloran argues that Joyce presents his readers with ideas and suggestions for the future of Ireland. As Irish studies become increasingly imbricated with postcolonial discourse, the need for re-examination of classic texts becomes necessary. James Joyce: Developing Irish Identity provides a new approach for understanding the dramatic development of Joyce’s oeurve by providing a textual analysis guided by postcolonial theory.
