Dr. Claude-Helene Mayer is an ethnologist (M.A. Philosophy), systematic counsellor, mediator and pedagogue in mediation (BM), who specializes in intercultural mediation. She works at the Institut für Interkulturelle Praxis und Konfliktmanagement (IIPK,"Institute for Intercultural Practice and Conflict Management"), and is degree recipient of the Institut für Ethnologie at the University of Göttingen, on the subject of research in conflict, identity and values in Southern Africa. Dr. Christian Boness is Head of Instruction in the Pedagogical Seminar of the University of Göttingen, Head Counsellor for Studies, Diplomaed Theologian, and mediator. He was active in development cooperation in Tanzania for a number of years. Today he is in the employ of the Institute for Intercultural Practice and Conflict Management, as Adviser of German organizations cooperating as partners in East Africa.

Since 1 January 2007, Moldova has been a direct neighbour of the European Union. Nonetheless, Moldova and the Russia-dominated geopolitics of the Black Sea region receive still relatively little attention in the West. This is all the more surprising as there remain a number of consequential political divisions and unresolved conflicts in the area. One of them is the Transnistria conflict in Moldova. This book is a contribution to the, so far, small research and policy agenda on Moldova, and includes findings of several research trips to Moldova, Transnistria and their neighbouring countries. At first, the study reassesses the Transnistria conflict. Contrary to widely held assumptions, this conflict is found to be mainly based on a clash of elites and geopolitical interests rather than on ethnic tensions. The second part of the book analyses the interests, official position, actual impact and potential role of the EU in Moldova's internal separatist conflict and its related external tensions with Russia. So far, the EU has had a limited involvement in the conflict resolution efforts and in the international relations of Moldova. This book concludes that it is becoming increasingly important and possible for the EU to get effectively involved in this region, but that the scope of EU activities in Moldova and Transnistria depends on the country’s relations with, and on the actions in this area of, the United States and Russia. At its end, the study offers recommendations for future EU policies directed at Moldova.

Wie sieht die aktuelle Streitkultur in der Kirche aus? Findet Mediation als Konfliktlösungsstrategie darin ihren Platz? Wie sehen die künftigen Chancen für Mediation in der Kirche aus? Und: Gibt es dabei konfessionelle Unterschiede? Maria Mattioli möchte gerade in Zeiten anstehender grosser kirchlicher Umstrukturierungsprozesse einen Anstoss für den wissenschaftlichen und auch praktischen offenen Diskurs zum Thema Konflikte und deren Bewältigung im kirchlichen Raum geben. Constructive conflict management is a competence which is of particular importance in international management. Furthermore, in an intercultural context, a manager not only needs to know how to handle conflicts in general, but also how his negotiation partners usually deal with them. This is important because the right way to solve a conflict i. e. in North America is not necessarily the right way in Indonesia. When coping with conflicts in international business negotiations, international managers must be aware of the fact that appropriate ways of solving conflicts in Western cultures like North America can very often be completely unacceptable in Asian cultures like Indonesia. The aim of this paper is to analyse typical conflict management strategies in North America and Indonesia, thereby highlighting major differences in appropriate conflict management between them.

Instead of inter-state war, intra-state conflicts now constitute the majority of current conflicts. "Global nuclear warfare is no longer the primary international security concern. It has been displaced by [...] excessively violent and destructive intra-state or internal conflicts." And these conflicts, which would have been regarded as purely internal matters during the Cold War, are now seen as being of international concern. Civil wars which are normally regionalised, are often nevertheless deemed to be a threat to international peace and security. As a result, the international community has become more and more involved in the resolution of civil wars, often by mediating peace negotiations between the parties involved. However, the resolution of civil war is one the most challenging tasks in Conflict Resolution. Only a minority of negotiations result in a lasting peace and only under exceptional circumstances is this achieved without a third party mediating the negotiations. Although many of the attempts to settle civil wars by mediation have failed, it is clear that the involvement of international mediators makes civil war negotiations more likely to succeed and in some cases indeed helps to find long-term solutions to the conflict.
