In the 1990s, the global stock market experienced the birth of the new technology sector and an extraordinary increase in values. However, the surge of stock values came to an end in 2000 when stock markets dropped significantly. Especially the technology sector suffered greatly, and a high amount of wealth was erased by sharply falling markets. Could it have been possible to predict stock prices in such a market environment and, therefore, enable the equity investor to invest in undervalued stocks, if there were any? The key question for an investor in this context is whether an investment is fairly priced at the time of investment. This is of importance if one believes that stock prices can be overvalued or undervalued at times but adjust to their true values in the long-term. To form an opinion on whether an investment is fairly priced or not, i.e. overvalued or undervalued, an investor needs a valuation model. Such a model provides a theoretically correct value which can be used as a benchmark for the decision. In her study, Sussane Hakuba examines the forecasting capability of two selected valuation models for long-term equity investments over a nine-quarter time horizon (from the 4th quarter of 1999 to the 4th quarter of 2000): a) the two-stage free cash flow to equity (FCFE) model and b) the dividend discount model (DDM) as applied by JPMorgan Fleming. Susanne Hakuba looks at the application of the two equity valuation models analyzed including theory on the models, their inputs, and assumptions made. In addition, she provides discussion of the stock valuations performed and comes to conclusions and recommendations for future valuations applying the models examined.

Higher education has become a mega-topic in both political and scientific debate. Developments in systems of higher education and changes in the governance of this field have been discussed in the literature. Such changes are brought about by collective actors within institutional settings. The present volume directs attention at Social Democratic governments in Sweden and in Germany, specifically in North-Rhine Westphalia in the latter case, and at the policies of higher education they have enacted from the mid-1960s to the year 2000. The empirical basis for this study is a qualitative analysis of such policy documents as inaugural speeches, governmental bills and recommendations of expert groups. The focus of the policies has shifted during the decades that were analysed from an input- to an output-orientation and from addressing issues of class to addressing those of gender segregation. These shifts are discussed against the background of a governmentís need for legitimation and the impact of intermediate actors on policy development.

Since 1 January 2007, Moldova has been a direct neighbour of the European Union. Nonetheless, Moldova and the Russia-dominated geopolitics of the Black Sea region receive still relatively little attention in the West. This is all the more surprising as there remain a number of consequential political divisions and unresolved conflicts in the area. One of them is the Transnistria conflict in Moldova. This book is a contribution to the, so far, small research and policy agenda on Moldova, and includes findings of several research trips to Moldova, Transnistria and their neighbouring countries. At first, the study reassesses the Transnistria conflict. Contrary to widely held assumptions, this conflict is found to be mainly based on a clash of elites and geopolitical interests rather than on ethnic tensions. The second part of the book analyses the interests, official position, actual impact and potential role of the EU in Moldova's internal separatist conflict and its related external tensions with Russia. So far, the EU has had a limited involvement in the conflict resolution efforts and in the international relations of Moldova. This book concludes that it is becoming increasingly important and possible for the EU to get effectively involved in this region, but that the scope of EU activities in Moldova and Transnistria depends on the country’s relations with, and on the actions in this area of, the United States and Russia. At its end, the study offers recommendations for future EU policies directed at Moldova.
