Post-communist democratic revolutions have, so far, taken place in six countries: Slovakia (1998), Croatia (1999-2000), Serbia (2000), Georgia (2003), Ukraine (2004) and Kyrgyzstan (2005). The seven chapters in this volume situate these events within a theoretical and comparative perspective. The volume draws upon extensive experience and field research conducted by political scientists specializing in comparative democratization, regime politics, political transitions, electoral studies, and the post-communist world. The papers by Valerie Bunce and Sharon Wolchik, Henry Hale, Paul D’Anieri; David R. Marples, Taras Kuzio, Lucan A. Way and Steven Levitsky, as well as Anika Locke Binnendijk and Ivan Marovic explore different regime types and opposition strategies in post-communist states, the diffusion of opposition strategies between states in which democratic revolutions were attempted, the strategic importance of youth NGO’s in mobilizing oppositions towards democratic revolutions, the use of non-violent strategies by the opposition, path dependent, theoretical and comparative explanations of the sources of successful and failed democratic revolutions, and the factors that lie behind divergent post-revolutionary trajectories. The volume represents a breakthrough in our understanding of why and how democratic revolutions take place in the post-communist world. It provides an integrated analysis of why such upheavals succeed in some, but fail in other states. The contributions point to, among other issues, why the post-revolutionary breakthroughs in Serbia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan have encountered obstacles, the ousted regime was never fully defeated and its representatives were able to launch counter-revolutions, as well as why, in Serbia and Ukraine, the political forces of the ousted regimes have returned to power in free elections held after democratic revolutions. Post-Communist Democratic Revolutions in Comparative Perspective will be important reading for scholars and policy makers alike.

In Ukraine’s presidential election of 2004, the establishment candidate Viktor Yanukovych had the advantage of a solid regional base, access to administrative resources, dominance in the media, Russian spin-doctors, and the support of Moscow. Yet the winner was the pro-Western challenger, Viktor Yushchenko. How did Ukrainian voters break through the barrage of propaganda so as to deliver their ultimate verdict? Was the divide between East and West Ukraine fact or PR fiction? In this volume scholars from two continents examine various aspects of the election that turned into an “Orange Revolution.” Following the editor’s scene-setting chapter which looks at the electoral laws and their consequences in the previous decade’s elections, presidential and parliamentary, the other contributors take up specific features of the 2004 contest. The critical part played by a single independent television broadcaster is one such contribution. Another reviews the coverage of the elections in the Russian press in Moscow, generally favourable to Yanukovych and always looking for parallels between Russia and Ukraine as well as for Russia’s interests. The myths and stereotypes of the campaign are taken up by two other contributors. Clearly, these overshadowed real issues. A fascinating essay exposes the linguistic innovations of the campaign, including the irony and humour unleashed by such incidents as the “egg attack” on Yanukovych. In the final essay, the machine politics, administrative resources, and fraud, which had worked so well in Donets’k are shown to have been less than successful on the national level for reasons of scale and impersonality. But like so much of contemporary politics, one still wonders if the “Orange Revolution” was only a media event.

Inwieweit lässt sich dieses Ordnungsprinzip aus bisherigen Erfahrungswerten der Ukraine herleiten? Der Beitrag von Sarah Whitmore widmet sich der internen Entwicklung und Organisationsstruktur des ukrainischen Parlaments seit der Unabhängigkeit, worin die Ursachen der bisherigen Marginalisierung der Verchovna Rada im Institutionensystem der Ukraine vermutet werden. Abschliessend diskutiert Ingmar Bredies die Frage nach einer neuen Parlamentskultur unter den Abgeordneten der Verchovna Rada als Bedingungsfaktor der Orangen Revolution.

Die als Orange Revolution bekanntgewordene ukrainische Wahlkrise im Winter 2004 wurde von zivilgesellschaftlichen Akteuren initiiert, ausgetragen und entschieden. Die vorliegende Studie fragt nach der Zusammensetzung und den Zielen der Protestbewegung gegen das Regime Leonid Kučmas; nach dem Verhältnis von systematischer Organisierung und spontaner Partizipation, nach den Ursachen für das Ausbleiben der von vielen befürchteten gewaltsamen Auseinandersetzung und weshalb sich gerade zu diesem Zeitpunkt ein Machtwechsel vollziehen konnte. Die Studie kommt unter anderem zu dem Ergebnis, dass die ukrainische Massenbewegung bereits Anfang 2001 aus einer Interessenkoalition von Oppositionsparteien, Unternehmern und basisdemokratischen Initiativen entstand, die eine frühe Ressourcenmobilisierung und systematische Vorbereitung des Massenprotests betrieben. Die Bewegung thematisierte mit zunehmender gesellschaftlicher Unterstützung die Unzufriedenheit der Bürger mit der autokratischen Herrschaft Kučmas. Über eine zweigleisige Strategie gelang es der Protestbewegung im Winter 2004 das umstrittene Ergebnis der Präsidentschaftswahl annullieren zu lassen, das Kučma-Regime zu Verhandlungen zu zwingen und die Präsidentschaft Viktor Juščenkos durchzusetzen. Nachdem die Opposition einer balancierteren Machtverteilung zwischen Präsident und Parlament zugestimmt hatte, konnte sie die Macht übernehmen. Die Gewaltlosigkeit der Bewegung war die wichtigste Voraussetzung für die Massenmobilisierung und das Überlaufen grosser Teile der Staatsgewalt. Sie eröffnete den Weg zu einer friedlichen Konfliktregelung mittels der durch den Massenprotest gestärkten demokratischen Institutionen und ermöglichte letztlich den Vertragsschluss der Streitparteien.

The findings of this study illustrate how the process of post-Soviet economic transition engenders, among others, significant spatial industrial restructuring. In addition to well-known changes in the characteristics of individual enterprises, these spatial aspects of restructuring can be key determinants of a firm's performance. Moreover, the effects of spatial restructuring appear as influencing both industry-specific and location-specific characteristics of firms. A number of previous studies have discussed overall economic structural changes in Kazakhstan, but only few highlight the regional-industrial perspective. A focus on regional issues is particularly relevant in this case, since Kazakhstani economic development was uneven and industrial activities are concentrated in certain geographical areas. The present study contributes to the existing literature through its perspective on regional development, at the industrial level. This is the first comprehensive analysis of regional industrial development in Kazakhstan based on research into individual firms. The study fills a gap by way analysing trends of industrial location in Kazakhstan in connection with characteristics of particular enterprises – factors the consideration of which should play a prominent role in the formulation of future regional and managerial policies.

Since their discovery in 1986, high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) are considered interesting physical systems as well as attractive candidates for a variety of technical applications. In both cases one of the key aspects to be understood is the mechanism of power dissipation, which depends primarily on vortex dynamics: the movement of magnetic flux lines in the superconductor when a transport current is applied. The present work studies vortex dynamics in experiments on two of the most prominent types of HTSC materials, YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (BSCCO), in the limit of low and high current densities. Both, the applied transport current density and the dimensionality of the materials, strongly influence the dynamic response. For the low current limit in BSCCO this thesis concentrates on the influence of oxygen stoichiometry and in YBCO on a vortex glass phase, which indicates a true superconducting state with vanishing linear resistivity. In the high current limit, for the first time, a vortex instability is shown to exist in BSCCO, apparently arising from a fluid phase, while a similar phenomenon in YBCO reveals a clear correlation of the high-dissipative instability to the low-dissipative vortex glass phase. The author: A native of Hamburg, Germany, Patrick Voss-de Haan studied physics at Stanford University and the University of Mainz. After completing a degree in the area of atomic physics and laser spectroscopy he began his work in solid state physics and superconductors, from which this Ph.D. thesis was compiled.
