Piano trios belong among the great genres of Classical chamber music, and Brahms, too, turned his attention to this genre early on. He wrote his opus 8 in fall and winter 1853/54, thus at the age of 20. The two other piano trios were created 28 years later, namely op. 87 in C major, and 32 years later, op. 101 in c minor. Brahms was working on another Trio, in E flat major, at the same time that he was working on the C major Trio; however, it seems to have been destroyed. He returned to his first piano trio in 1889 and revised it so thoroughly that he wrote to Clara Schumann: “I have re-written my B major trio.” The Henle Urtext edition reproduces the second version of the Trio op. 8 (published in 1891) first, then follows this up with a reprint of the first version in its Appendix.

“No opus number” is what Brahms gave his astonished publisher to understand, when he offered him the Hungarian Dances for publication in 1869. He placed a great deal of importance on the fact that he had merely “set” popular Hungarian melodies and not composed new works as such. As true as this reservation is, it did not affect the success of these works. The Hungarian Dances are today without a doubt amongst Brahms’ best-known compositions. Brahms himself made an arrangement of the dances 1–10; originally for piano four hands, for solo piano. We are now publishing a revised version of these impressive pieces with the up-to-date text in the new Brahms Complete Edition. Rolf Koenen’s fingerings provide the best possible help for mastering these complex works.

My enthusiasm for Brahms goes back to my youth, and the piano concertos are largely responsible for it,? writes Sir András Schiff in a liner note for this remarkable new recording. The historically informed Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment plays with the flexibility, attitude, and responsiveness of a chamber music ensemble, as they work without a conductor, listening attentively to each other. Das Dreieck als Symbol des Denkens zeigt die Eigenschaft von Gelb mit seinem schwerelosen Charakter, der aber auch stachlig sein kann wie spitze Winkel. Orange dagegen zeigt die Eigenschaften eines Trapezes, Grün ist dem sphärischen Dreieck verwandt und Violett entspricht der Ellipse. Wird also eine Farbe in der entsprechenden Form gezeichnet, steigert sich deren spezifischer Ausdruck. Die sechs Nuancen reichen entsprechend dem Farbenstern von hellem Pastell bis zum sehr dunklen Ton einer Farbe. Durch das Spielen wird die Wahrnehmung von verschiedenen Nuancen der Farbtöne geschärft und ihr Benennen gefördert. Die Formen und Farben prägen sich ein. Beim Aufdecken werden immer wieder neue Kontraste aus der Farbenlehre entdeckt. Diese können aber auch entsprechend gelegt werden: bunt zu bunt, hell zu dunkel, kalt zu warm, leuchtend zu trüb usw. Die Karten inspirieren zum Legen von Farbreihen, zum Ordnen der verschiedenen Töne und zum Komponieren von eigenen Bildern und Kombinationen.

Kurt Thut (1931–2011) vereinte als Architekt, Möbelentwerfer und -produzent verschiedene Aspekte der Schweizer Wohnkultur. Sein Werdegang begann mit einer Schreinerlehre im väterlichen Betrieb im aargauischen Möriken. Anschliessend bildete er sich bei Willy Guhl, Hans Bellmann und Johannes Itten an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich zum Architekten und Möbelgestalter aus, wo er nach Abschluss des Studiums als Assistent bei Hans Fischli arbeitete. Seit den 1970er-Jahren engagierte er sich auch in der Familienfirma. Thuts architektonisches Schaffen war stark vom Bauhaus und von Mies van der Rohe beeinflusst. Als Gestalter verfolgte er fast 50 Jahre lang einen formal zurückhaltenden und ökologischen Ansatz. Gemäss diesen Prinzipien experimentierte er auch als Produzent erfolgreich mit neuen Materialien und Techniken. Viele seiner Entwürfe werden vom heutigen Unternehmen Thut Möbel unverändert hergestellt, das 2009 mit dem Schweizer Grand Prix Design ausgezeichnet wurde. Diese erste Monografie stellt ausgewählte Möbelentwürfe und Bauten Kurt Thuts umfassend vor. Sie dokumentiert, wie sein puristisches und zugleich innovatives Werk die Schweizer Wohn- und Unternehmenskultur mitgeprägt hat.

Alexander Zemlinsky is mainly known for his operas and orchestral songs with their opulent late Romantic orchestration. His earlier, inspired hit, the Trio for Clarinet op. 3, written in 1896, owes a great deal to his first important role model Johannes Brahms as far as inflection and instrumentation are concerned. And it was none other than Brahms himself who enthusiastically recommended the trio to his publisher Simrock, following the first performance in Vienna. As the autograph has disappeared, our edition follows the musical text in the first edition. It underwent careful examination and was cleared of numerous, partly blatant engraver’s errors.
