Informal groups and individuals were offering political advice since the eighteenth century, maybe earlier.2 In this essay I try to examine some of the major British think tanks that focus on the European Union and their politics concerning the EU. Where possible, I will give evidence on how they actually influenced British policy making in terms of the EU. I will examine the possibilities of how think tanks can influence governments and public opinion and I will summarize some of the criticism on think tanks in general. [...]

The research was conducted in Austria, Denmark and the UK, and qualitative data was collected via a series of semi-structured interviews. Through this research different types of support, including women¿s priorities and values, as well as their abilities have been discussed with the aim to find out how they manage their work-life balance. Additionally, interactions between professional and private life have been considered in order to explore if there is a connection between work-life balance and work performance. The research findings indicated that there are some historical and cultural problems as well as individual circumstances which make it difficult to combine work and family life. Women manage their time effectively and organise everything, but managing multiple roles is a complex challenge, which requires sophisticated solutions. Women need support from their family; help from their partners and companies¿ flexibility are identified as the most important things to reach a satisfactory work-life balance. Additionally, childcare has to be provided by the government or organised privately so that women can focus on their careers. This study concluded that women have to invest considerable personal resources, such as time and energy in order to achieve a satisfactory work-life balance through their career life cycle. In addition, evidence suggested that a satisfied work-life balance has a positive impact on work performance. Further research recommendations have been given as well as a pragmatic self-generated model.

This term characterises the unparalleled close Anglo-American relations during the Second World War and in the time thereafter. The shared perception that Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union constituted major external threats to their well-being bound the societies and leaderships of Great Britain and the United States together. The looming menace ceased to exist after the break-up of the Soviet Union and the demise of Communism, and for several authors so did the raison d¿être of the Special Relationship as well. It was more however that brought these two countries together than the shared perception of a communist threat. Why is it that "neither country has fully adjusted its mind to thinking of the members of the other society as foreigners", and that Americans still refer to Britain as the "mother country" every now and then? Why do certain authors call Britain the "fortified outpost of the Anglo-Saxon race" or the "unsinkable aircraft carrier"? And is it just by chance that fictional author George Orwell calls Britain "Airstrip One" and associates it with North America in his novel "1984"? Is it a coincidence or are these - admittedly vague - expressions signs of subtle yet overarching bonds between the two countries? This work will analyse and discuss various aspects of Anglo-American relations. The apparent cooperation in the fields of foreign and security policy will be assessed, as well as the more disguised realm of military and intelligence collaboration. Following is a chapter about two aspects that dominate our time, economy and business in the Anglo-American relationship. The last chapter attempts to illuminate the obscure field of "private" relations between the Anglo-American nations, as well as the importance of the personal relationships between the individual Presidents and Prime Ministers. For a better understanding of Anglo-American Affairs the common backgrounds of the two countries are assessed historically, culturally and in terms of language. The question or the leitmotif on which this work is be based asks whether the concept of a Special Relationship in current Anglo-American relations is still a de facto reality or just a myth, that lingers on from the shared experience of the two World wars: Does the weary British Lion still enjoy a remarkably "special" relationship with the almighty American Eagle?

This paper expands on the topic of Bryson¿s view both of Great Britain and the United States of America by means of national stereotyping as it emerges from his novels Notes from a Small Island (1995) and Notes from a Big Country (1998). I maintain that Bryson depicts Britain and America in an authentic and educative as well as hilarious and exaggerated manner to emphasize differences between the nations in question. I will prove my thesis that Bryson both criticises and praises British and American values which affect the national character. Bryson conveys his national views both from the perspective of an insider and outsider. William ¿Bill¿ McGuire Bryson was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1951. In 1973, he travelled to England where he became acquainted with his wife, Cynthia Billen, with whom he has four children. Bryson lived in Yorkshire, returned to America to graduate in 1995, and resided with his family in Norfolk, in 2003. While in America Bryson is well-known for elaborating on the English language, he accomplished bestseller standing with travelogues in Great Britain. Although he claims not to be a travel writer because he ¿stumbled into this genre¿, Bryson composes ¿books on travel and the English language¿ in which his ¿wanderlust and eccentricity¿ promise a unique reading adventure (Oder 191). Travel writing is a neglected but miscellaneous genre of ancient times which flourished in the sixteenth century and encompasses narratives of expansionism, such as encyclopaedic accounts of foreign nations, and became the principal negotiator of propagating stereotypes in colonial novels. While Bryson¿s journey novel Notes from a Small Island depicts the Great Britain he adores, he grudgingly wrote columns about America which resulted in his journalistic novel Notes from a Big Country.

Insbesondere soll dabei auf die sozio-ökonomische Situation der Charaktere, deren soziale Beziehungen untereinander, den 'Working Class Pride and Traditionalism', die männliche Identifikation der Figuren und ihre regionale Verwurzelung eingegangen werden. Die zentralen Fragen, die sich dahingehend stellen, sind: Wie werden diese Aspekte in den Filmen dargestellt? Und inwiefern werden sie stereotypisiert dargestellt? Diese Arbeit beruht auf der Annahme, dass die meisten Stereotype auf das traditionelle Bild der 'working class' des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts zurückgreifen. Aus diesem Grund wird diese Ära und ihr Einfluss auf das Leben der Arbeiter näher betrachtet, um dann Rückschlüsse auf die Repräsentation der Arbeiterklasse in 'Brassed Off' und 'The Full Monty' ziehen zu können. This essay, which is going to analyse the representation of class in 'Brassed Off' and 'The Full Monty', will particularly focus on the typicality of the representations. It will analyse the characters' socio-economic situation, their social bonds, the 'working class pride and traditionalism', the workers' male identity and their regional identity. The central question will be, in which ways the films can be seen as "typical" working class motion pictures. In this respect, the stereotyping of the social classes in these two films will particularly be focused on. This essay is based on the assumption that most stereotypes refer back to the traditional image of the working class as it existed at the beginning of the 20th century. In this context, it shall be analysed if the makers of 'Brassed Off' and 'The Full Monty' also used such stereotypes to produce an image of "the good old working class". In order to gain an understanding of these working class stereotypes, the first chapter of this paper will deal with the "old" working class as it existed at the turn of the 20th century and its main characteristics.

Erschwert wird diese Analyse durch die Reizüberflutung, welcher der Rezipient auf Grund von auditiven und visuellen Elementen ausgesetzt wird. Grund für diese Komplexität, wie sie auch in "Coffee & TV" vorzufinden ist, ist die Absicht des Regisseurs, den Zuschauer zum mehrmaligen Betrachten des Musikvideos zu bewegen. Dieses Ziel wird ebenso durch eine gewisse Unklarheit in der lyrics- story und/ oder Bild- story erreicht, wodurch der Rezipient gezwungen wird, das Video wiederholt zu betrachten, um Sinnzusammenhänge zu klären. Ob und in wie weit dies in "Coffee & TV" der Fall ist, wird ebenfalls in der Arbeit erörtert. Als weiterer und abschliessender Analyseaspekt folgt die Untersuchung der Zusammenwirkung der realen und irrealen Welt, symbolisiert durch computergesteuerte Trickbilder.

Therefore, they have contradictory intentions and express either friendly or hostile opinions: Nevertheless, certain stereotypes of Germans are recurrent, regardless of which attitude is represented. The two following lists of German attributes have only recently been compiled: The first one is the result of the Chequers-Conference in March 1990, when Margaret Thatcher discussed the aspects of German reunification with some confidants: The Conference¿s consensus on ¿eternal¿ German characteristics was : ¿insensitivity to the feeling of others, [...] aggressiveness; assertiveness, bullying, egotism [...].¿ The memo was not designed to be published, therefore one can assume that the participants spoke frankly. Several other ¿German¿ features can be found in a poll in which students were asked about national characteristics: According to the majority, Germans are: "orderly, (disciplined, organises, efficient, obedient to rules, inflexible, punctual); hard-working, (laborious and ambitious); arrogant (particularly in intellectual matters); complex (difficult to understand, Angst-ridden)". My paper will focus on the occurrence of several of these images in advertising, especially in four campaigns released between 1993 and 1997: Three of them deal with German products promoted for German consumers, one of them deals with a British product for the British market but refers to Anglo-German conflict in order to tell its story. We will see that especially the stereotypical German virtues (as mentioned above) are applied in order to emphasise the value of the goods. In contrast, one example shows how negative images are used to show British superiority.

Most of us combine the country with the myth of Nessie, the Clans and their tartan culture, the good whisky, the Highlands and the famous Highland Games. All these existing images of Scotland make up a large part of the country¿s culture but Scotland is more than that. Only the minority of us might think of Scotland as a country with a long and problematic history and just some are regarding the fact that it has still not gained its entire independence. It is a country full of contrasts and difficulties which you cannot only become aware of when you consider the geographical situation but also the social, political and cultural circumstances. A today¿s problem resulting from Scotland¿s long history is the question of Scottish identity, and accompanied by that the language problem. Language is an element of culture and people express through their language and speaking behaviour identities and attitudes. In Scotland the situation is quite difficult. As part of the United Kingdom the official language spoken in Scotland is Standard English but depending on the area you are visiting, you can also find speakers of other varieties such as Scots or Gaelic or even dialects. However, these varieties are said to be non- standardised languages and therefore are not officially used in Scotland. That leads to the problem that speakers of these varieties have the feeling not to be part of the speaker community and consequently they cannot identify themselves with these. The issue that now has to be surveyed, is the question what types of languages are existing in Scotland and how do these language varieties influence the identities and attitudes of Scots. For that reason I have planned to concentrate on one of Scotland¿s languages and would like to write my paper about the Scots and their tongue. In the first part I will deal with the Scots, their nation and their development. The main focus in my work will be the re-flection on Modern Scots, the problematic of the Scots¿ status and its varieties. I am going to discuss if it is a distinct language, an accent or a dialect and will also look at the different varieties of Scots inside and outside of Scotland to give an overview of existing forms.
