This quotation is an interesting definition of medicine by Tirumular - one of the greatest and earliest Tamil Siddha. The Tamil Siddhas - so a lot of authors assume - have invented or developed the Tamil medical system named Siddha medicine. Till today this medical system exists totally unknown in India with a few geographical exceptions in the South - next to the popular Ayurveda medical system. The Siddha medicine is to find in the present time only in Tamilnadu and in a few parts of Kerala. There is a bulk of works on Siddha medicine exclusive in the Tamil language. A lot of these works are not yet studied, because of their secretive and symbolic language, their partially bad conditions and their difficult accessibility. Many questions about this system cannot be answered, yet. Till today it is not clear when and where the Siddha medicine exactly originated, why it was invented or developped, at all, and why it has not become as popular as Ayurveda. In this work I will explain in a very generalized form what the notion ¿siddha¿means and what person a Siddha is like. I will try to find out when the Siddha medicine was developped, and I will give a short introduction of the fundamental principles of the Siddha medicine. Then I will show some problems of the Siddha medicine, and therefore why it could not be as popular as the Ayurveda system. Further I will give possible answers why the Tamil system was invented or developed, at all, and I will compare the Siddha medicine with the Ayurveda to show which of these two systems is probably the older one. At least, I will give an image of the situation in the present time. I will not explain the Siddha groups and several medical features of Siddha medicine in detail. The subject is too far-reaching and complicated to go into details in this work. The subject can only be broached and is presented in a very generalized form.

Poe, ¿who has so drastically altered the landscape of the popular imagination¿ (Wright 375) and who ¿had such a powerful effect on his fellow artists¿ (Wright 375), created with ¿Ligeiä a typical text of the Romantic Period. The text ¿Ligeiä is about the death of the young lady Ligeia. After her death her husband becomes addicted to opium. Although he spends most of his time thinking of Ligeia, he soon gets married with the lady Rowena Trevanion. After their marriage he brings Rowena into a bridal chamber. This chamber is full of funeral decorations, what attacks Rowena with horror. Because of that she gets ill and feels the presence of the dead Ligeia in the room. Finally Rowena dies and the narrator ends the story with Ligeiäs transformation into Rowenäs body. After this transformation the reader has to ask himself if Ligeia actually existed, if the whole story is true or if it only takes place in the imagination of the narrator. To illustrate ¿Ligeiä as a romantic text I will give a short overview of the history and the elements of the Romantic Period. Afterwards I will explain these elements in Poe¿s text ¿Ligeiä according to keywords like Gothic, Imagination, and the function of the narrator, which are usual for romanticism. Finally I will tell something about Poe¿s theory concerning the short story to show on the one hand the importance of the self as a major theme of romanticism and on the other hand why Poe helped to establish the genre of science fiction, horror, and fantasy in his modern form.

(III,1) The question of "to be or not to be", which is in essence the question of identity, is a widely discussed and fundamental theme of life, a topic many authors have written about and many producers have made the central theme of Hollywood movies. The purpose of this essay is to discuss question of identity in postmodern American short stories. It will include a presentation of postmodernism in its contrast to modernism. Three short stories from different American authors will be discussed in regard to conflicts and development of identity: "Lost in the funhouse" by John Barth, "Saint Marie" taken from Louise Erdrichs "Love medicine" and "A Wife's Story" by Bharati Mukherjee. Special attention will be paid to the story of initiation.

Most of all the field of religion is affected by these words. Long time the church declared to know the absolute and unmistakable truth of our world. But today our science-stamped knowledge more and more disproves many dogmas spread by the church. Yet, religion is not the only field where this quote can be employed. Also in our daily activities and lives, people who overestimate their knowledge and capabilities normally never reach their aims. This does not always has to do with arrogance. Sometimes people simply think that what they know and do has to be right or perfect because it is what ¿the mass¿ would think or do. But in most cases it is better to think before acting, to be different from the mass, especially to think different to achieve things, the mass would not be able to achieve. No quote would be more appropriate for Edgar Allen Poe¿s story The Purloined Letter, than that from Seneca.. Only the Detective Dupin, who is looking for the truth is able to find it, because he does not underestimate the gifts of his enemy. He does not think of himself to be a wise man but he thinks himself to be clever. And this is a gift which is sometimes more important than being wise. Poe constructs his hard-boiled detective story round just one very crucial object ¿ a letter. A letter that influences the people possessing it, using it. This document can be regarded as the main actor in the story. For this reason this paper ¿s aim is to analyse the role of ¿the letter¿ as it is only a sheet of paper, and at the same time more than just a sheet of paper. Its influence an significance in regard to text structure, construction of characters and course of the story will be examined. All this will be looked at with a constant connection to the philosophical and psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Derrida and Jacques Lacan. Especially Lacan¿s interpretations will be discussed, as he was occupied with Poe¿s story in his Seminar on ¿The Purloined Letter¿. The final summary shall bundle the gained information to a logical minimum and draw some conclusions from it.

This was wireless telecom and had been identified to have a huge market potential by top management. This new business demanded heavy investments in cutting edge technology but revenue came in from all parts of the firm and Ericsson had the investor¿s confidence, backed by the two strongest business spheres in Sweden. At the same time there was a similar company in the neighbour country of Finland. Nokia, an old engineering company, offered similar products but had lived in the shadow of Ericsson. Wireless telecom took of and together with internet soon became the growth industry of the nighties. Every trader on Wall Street all by a sudden knew about these two companies from the remote north of Europe. In a rapidly growing market there was money to be made for all players in this field but when the stock market rally of the nineties was over, its little brother from Finland outperformed Ericsson. This paper will look at the strategic paths these companies took and why the smaller player managed to outperform the giant. Focal firm Lars Eric Ericsson founded Ericsson 1876. Ericsson has always been a technological driven company, usually with engineers as top management. Ericsson is a diversified company operating in defence, radar, telephone and wireless telephone. Although a diversified engineering company, Ericsson¿s tremendous growth during the nineties comes from their expertise wireless telephoning. This includes mobile systems, components and mobile phones. The distinctive competence comes from their expertise in mobile systems. They were first with NMT (G1) and later with the GMS (G2) system currently in use. Ericsson is a company full of engineers and the engineering culture is deeply rooted within the company. It has always been in the forefront in mobile systems and R&D; is a cornerstone in this company. However, it is not enough to be good at engineering.

Studies of nonverbal communication can be traced back till times of the Roman Empire. The rhetorical treatises of Quintilian and Cicero already dealt with the meaning of hand gestures. However just in the seventeenth century with Bonifcio's and Bulwer's works gestures obtained a status "of a subject of its one right" (BULL:25). Yet elaborate study of nonverbal communication is only possible since sophisticated recording techniques have been developed which allow repeated viewing and analysis of human behaviour (for instance data gloves or video tapes). As a consequence studies of nonverbal communication developed rather lately. In the late fifties of the last century Edward HALL and Ray BIRDWHISTELL made first attempts to study nonverbal behaviour not only as a psychological function but as a means of communication. In general studies of nonverbal communication emerged as a reaction to the "overwhelming emphasis placed on verbal behaviour in the field of communication" (JONES/LEBARON:512). Subsequent a number of studies were conducted so that in the seventies nonverbal communication became an established topic (HELLER:2). In the nineties space and place received renewed interest.. This paper introduces the vast field of nonverbal communication. It is aimed at giving an overview of the different forms while focussing on proxemics, as "all behavior is located in and constructed of space"

In the eyes of Hughes and Wright, custom, tradition and religion may be seen as some of the root causes of racism because they are largely interiorized, but they by far cannot serve alone as satisfying explanations for it. Important in the creation of racism is e.g. the negative projection of colored people in the media. Consequently, this forms a fatal preconception of blacks that is constantly being reproduced. Langston Hughes and Richard Wright, among the most prolific of American writers, gained international attention and acclaim in nearly every genre of writing, including poetry, the short story, the novel, drama, the libretto, the autobiography, journalistic prose, children's and adolescent literature and song lyrics. Although much of their writing, often expressing social protest, was easily accessible to scholars and general readers, there is one genre ¿the essay¿ that has gone largely unnoticed. Yet such essays and short, non-fiction passages contribute significantly to Hughes¿s and Wright¿s work, striving for racial equality on a local level, a national, as well as global levels. At first glance, it may appear fruitless to compare the non-fiction works of Hughes and Wright, since the writers became famous for their poetry and fictional masterpieces. Also, a comparison between Wright¿s rather epic artistic style and Hughes¿s dense, often ironic prose may seem unlikely and difficult. Yet, on closer inspection, you will find that both writers are surprisingly close to one another in their way of thinking, and their conclusions often overlap. Hughes was a columnist for the famous African-American newspaper, the ¿Chicago Defender,¿ where he commented on contemporary issues and chronicled the hopes and despairs of his people. In spite of the different origins of the writers, Hughes and Wright were confronted early on with race discrimination and segregation, publicly know as ¿Jim Crow-ism1,¿ which was identified and condemned in their essays.

With this last line of 'The Ballad of Mulan' the (anonymous) author raises the gender question already in the 6th century. In this essay, I would like to analyse The Representation of Gender in Walt Disney¿s 'Mulan', using the structure of the movie to focus on The Protagonist Fa Mulan, the Treatment of Women and the Depiction of Men. Additionally, the inquiry concerning the Meaning of Song Texts in Disney¿s 'Mulan' appears useful as these always play an important role in conveying movie themes. In order to establish a connection to the seminar on which this paper is based, I will illustrate how the movie is a good example for Judith Butler¿s theory of Gender as Performance. Last but not least, I would like to show the Influence of Disney¿s 'Mulan' on Society because fairy tales and movies '[¿] do influence the manner in which children conceive the world and their places in it [¿]'. Drawing the 'Conclusion', I will try a careful approach to find out if Disney¿s 'Mulan' might even be considered as a feminist movie. (...)
