Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7 (A-), University of Leipzig (Anglistics), course: Screening Britain: British History and Society in Recent Films, language: English, abstract: Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Darstellung der britischen Arbeiterklasse in den beiden Filmen 'Brassed Off' (Mark Herman, 1996) und 'The Full Monty' (Peter Cattaneo, 1997) zu analysieren. This essay, which is going to analyse the representation of class in 'Brassed Off' and 'The Full Monty', will particularly focus on the typicality of the representations. It will analyse the characters' socio-economic situation, their social bonds, the 'working class pride and traditionalism', the workers' male identity and their regional identity. The central question will be, in which ways the films can be seen as "typical" working class motion pictures. In this respect, the stereotyping of the social classes in these two films will particularly be focused on. This essay is based on the assumption that most stereotypes refer back to the traditional image of the working class as it existed at the beginning of the 20th century. In this context, it shall be analysed if the makers of 'Brassed Off' and 'The Full Monty' also used such stereotypes to produce an image of "the good old working class". In order to gain an understanding of these working class stereotypes, the first chapter of this paper will deal with the "old" working class as it existed at the turn of the 20th century and its main characteristics.

Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, The Australian National University (Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies), 125 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The following three essays are working papers on different issues, like "The Rise of China", protectionism and the understanding of the US being an empire or a hegemon. These have been written during a research visit at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian National University. While the first essay on "The Rise of China" is concerned with the relation of Australia and the US, which seems to be influenced by the rising star of China, the second essay also talks about a very topical issue of protectionism in a globalized or globalizing world. The ongoing crisis of finance since the end of 2008 and the following recession is challenging free trade and liberalism today. In regard to "The Rise of China" the issue became more and more important since Chinese companies seem to buy out the Australian economy in 2009. Finally, the last essay is focused on the question of how the United States should be understood in regard to its foreign policy. Referring to the concepts of empire and hegemony, the author introduces the two cases of ancient Athens and Sparta. As Athens is seen as the ideal empire and Sparta is supposed to be the ideal hegemon, the essay compares both Greek city-states and their policies with the US foreign policies under Bush II and the neocons.

Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, Dresden Technical University (Anglistik), 9 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This thesis compares several working class films such as "Brassed Off" and "Billy Elliot" with reference to the theoretical concept of national identity, ie. the British national identity. The analysis of such a diverse cultural term like "identity" and its treatment in British working class related films will be the topic of this research paper. After having defined the term on its several levels, I want to show how identity is treated differently in, firstly, a popular film called "Brassed Off" and, secondly, an independent film produced by Amber Films called "Like Father". Both films are set in the 1990's and deal with the problem of pit closure and unemployment of miners. Both films deal with the consequences of unemployment and poverty of the working class than with work per se. Concerning class consciousness, both films show people who wish to escape the constrictions of their class. Since identity is not only a question of class, gender roles are considered in both films as well. The motif of identity is shown very differently in these films. This thesis analyzes how these films represent the construction, the maintenance and the loss of identity.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, University of Osnabrück (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Introduction to Gender Theory, language: English, abstract: 'How can they tell if I am male or female?' With this last line of 'The Ballad of Mulan' the (anonymous) author raises the gender question already in the 6th century. In this essay, I would like to analyse The Representation of Gender in Walt Disney¿s 'Mulan', using the structure of the movie to focus on The Protagonist Fa Mulan, the Treatment of Women and the Depiction of Men. Additionally, the inquiry concerning the Meaning of Song Texts in Disney¿s 'Mulan' appears useful as these always play an important role in conveying movie themes. In order to establish a connection to the seminar on which this paper is based, I will illustrate how the movie is a good example for Judith Butler¿s theory of Gender as Performance. Last but not least, I would like to show the Influence of Disney¿s 'Mulan' on Society because fairy tales and movies '[¿] do influence the manner in which children conceive the world and their places in it [¿]'. Drawing the 'Conclusion', I will try a careful approach to find out if Disney¿s 'Mulan' might even be considered as a feminist movie. (...)

grin intertextuality in ken russel

Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1-, Bielefeld University (Fakultät für Linguistik und Literaturwissenschaft), course: Motivgeschichte/Intertextualität: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, language: English, abstract: The film Gothic starring Gabriel Byrne (in the role of Lord Byron), Julian Sands (Percy Bysshe Shelley), Natasha Richardson (Mary [Wollstonecraft Godwin] Shelley), Myriam Cyr (Claire Clairmont) and Timothy Spall (Dr John Polidori) and directed by Ken Russell was made in 1986. It is difficult to decide whether the film is a horror film or a period film because it contains elements of both genres. The viewer¿s judgement depends on his or her previous knowledge of the life of the characters. If the viewer does not recognize the relation between the elements and statements in the film and texts written by and about the protagonists he or she will feel Gothic to be mainly a horror film. In other words intertextuality plays an important role in Gothic. Therefore, the aim of this term paper is to analyze the intertextual relations between the film and various texts. Since there are many different concepts concerning intertextuality I will mostly focus on Julia Kristeväs idea of intertextuality in the first chapter. In the second chapter the literary historical aspects of Gothic will be examined. The film is set in 1816, i.e. in the second phase of the Romantic period. I will analyze how Ken Russell represents some of the characteristics of the Romantic period in his film. Among others, a motif in the film is the artificial being and the creation of an artificial being respectively. This motif is also the topic of Mary Shelley¿s novel Frankenstein. The third chapter deals on the one hand with the question how the motif ¿artificial being¿ is represented in Ken Russell¿s film and on the other hand in how far this parallels the novel Frankenstein and Gothic. Finally, the aim of the fourth chapter is to compare the ¿real¿ events around the group of the Villa Diodati with the fictional image the director gives in Gothic. Concerning the secondary literature to compare to the film I could have used texts about almost all of the characters included. I decided to concentrate on Lord Byron and Mary Shelley. Byron is the most extravagant figure of the five persons. Besides, the atmosphere is very much dominated by him.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, University of Göttingen (SEP), course: Representation of History in Contemporary British and Postcolonial Literature, language: English, abstract: [...] A reviewer once has called Alias Grace ¿the doctoral dissertation that Atwood did not complete, a tour de force rendition of nineteenth century Canadian social life.¿ In fact, the authoress had done some proper historical research, and definitely the better part of the novel's attraction ¿emanates from its basis in the truth, and the sheer impossibility of tracking down that truth.¿ The title itself already alludes to the difficulty of finding out the true identity of the historical person Grace Marks: ¿The title signals a disturbing absence of the original behind the name. [¿] This novel recognizes that no written [¿] history allows either the real women's voice nor the true story of the past to be recovered.¿ The traditional modernist view of history depends on a belief in and a pursuit of objectivity. In her novels, Atwood often challenges these modernist views. As a consequence, the reader is rather confronted with different, even contradictory versions of one and the same story. Until its very end the novel refuses to deliver an unambiguous and unmistakable reconstruction of the events at Richmond Hill. So Alias Grace is not only concerned with history just because the plot is set in the past, but also the issues 'memory', 'historical truth' and the 'reconstruction of historical events' form a thematic constellation that plays a crucial role in the novel. The aim of this paper is supposed to discuss the question of how Atwood deals with the representation of history and historical 'truth' in her novel Alias Grace, thus offering a general questioning of the truthfulness and objectivity of historical accounts. For this purpose it seems to be appropriate to touch on briefly the narrative construction of the novel. The prominent role reconstruction of history plays in the novel, becomes already apparent in the fact that the better part of the plot is set nearly two decades after the events that are to be reconstructed, so that any occupation with the murders in the novel itself must be a retrospective one. Not one single narrator, but a ¿plethora of voices¿ unfold the story in a multiperspective narrative situation. After having introduced the most influential recent theoretical concepts on the relationship of historical and literary writing, each narrative perspective is to be discussed in more detail in the following chapters to find out how they all work together in a kind of ¿narrative patchwork.¿ [...] Aus der Einleitung

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Osnabrück, language: English, abstract: Compared to other writers of his time, Shakespeare introduces an unusual amount of deep female characters in his comedies. His representation of women, in particular the ways in which his female roles are interpreted and put on stage, have become topics of scientific interest. Especially the young women often show vitality, great intelligence, and a strong sense of personal independence, which marks them as ¿queen[s] of comedy¿ (Palmer 72). Therefore, they are often referred to as Shakespeare¿s heroines. In the following, I want to show their importance and point out that each heroine, although they all share character traits, has distinct and unique qualities. In doing so, I will occasionally refer to a secondary literature and involve positions of different critics. Though, my attention will be focussed on the plays treated in this research paper: A Midsummer Night¿s Dream, As You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing, The Tempest, and Twelfth Night. On the basis of these romantic comedies, I will analyse how the young women are presented and subsequently compare them among one another. In the first part I will look at each heroine individually and introduce their plays. Then I will develop possible similarities between them: Beautiful but unworldly Miranda seems to be totally controlled by her father Prospero, but she shows a strong will in planning a shared future with Ferdinand and she is aware of her superiority to the savage Caliban. Hermiäs father similarly chooses her husband. With magic help, however, she and Helena manage to come together with the right partner. Moreover, Helena reveals that she believes in the transformative power of love (MND I.2, 233-4). Viola in Twelfth Night is in a way almost the opposite of Rosalind in As You Like It, although both plays deal with a cross-dressed heroine. Whereas Rosalind can tease Orlando, always knowing that he is in love with her and being moreover able to reveal herself to him whenever she wants, Viola feels trapped in her disguise and has to work for the man she is in love with and even woo another woman on his behalf. Beatrice may not disguise herself in order to show her power like Rosalind, but she is nevertheless a strong female character: she marries only after asserting her dislike for the traditionally minor role of women in marriage and courtship in that time.[...]
