The contemporary American novel is written by Nicole Krauss and was published in 2005. By now it has been translated into more than twenty-five languages. (Krauss back cover) The paper will start with the biography of the author and her connection to the novel and to its content. The next and main chapters will then deal with the novel itself, which takes place in New York in the time after the 2nd world war and which is told through various stories, perspectives and characters. The paper's focus will lie on two very important and story-defining themes: Loneliness and Love. The main question of this paper will be in which way Loneliness and Love belong together and how this inextricable connection is portrayed in the book. This will further be pointed out through the relationship and personality of chosen characters (Alma and Leo Gursky). To make it more understandable a short plot and character overview will be given at the beginning of the paper. The paper will be ended by a conclusion, which sums up all results of my research and analysis and which gives answers to the main question of this paper.

It was love that kept him moving and developing. It was love that confused him and made him reflect. It was love that shattered him and made him mourn. Yeats¿s experience with love was rich and fulfilling as well as frustrating and devastating. In order to come to a better understanding of Yeats¿s love poetry, we need to take a look into his private life: ¿Yeats met the fiery revolutionary [Maud Gonne] in 1889. He fell deeply in love with her and would propose to her in 1891, 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1916. Gonne had no use for Yeats's proposals. However, she did have a use for his talents. Gonne would use Yeats for his ability as an orator. Maud Gonne, dragging him at her heels on nationalist agitations, soon found that he was a natural orator and could easily dominate committees. Maud Gonne would continue to turn Yeats proposals down, yet she continued to be the catalyst for the finest love poetry Yeats would ever create. Gonne would once ask for Yeats's help in London, ending a brief but happy love affair with Olivia Shakespear. Sensing divided loyalty, Shakespear would end the affair and it was shortly thereafter that Lady Gregory would save Yeats from a potentially more tragic end, like the poets of the tragic generation¿ (cf. nadn.navy). Yeats really loved Maud Gonne. She was the love of his life, and still, she would never really react to, let alone return his love. Yeats has experienced the many different facets of love through this continuous interaction between his everlasting true and sincere affection and dedication and her cold and calculating rejection. But although this may be a personal tragedy it also resulted in something positive and beautiful, namely Yeats¿s love poetry Maud Gonne inspired him to. Yeats managed to deal with all his positive and negative experiences in a productive way and included them into his poetry. Maud Gonne once even said to him that she could not stop rejecting him as he would not write such beautiful poetry about her anymore then. As said, Yeats¿s perception and concepts of love can be identified in his poetry. Furthermore, we can identify a development of Yeats¿s depiction of love in his poetry. We can find many different sides of love in Yeats¿s poems. In some poems, Yeats describes it as an almost divine power. In other poems, he starts doubting whether love is really that fulfilling or not. And in further poems, he even focuses on the dark and destructive sides of love. These different concepts of love will be described in this paper through the analysis of selected poems.

This is mainly due to the fact that American music is a worldwide predominant cultural reality. Black American music with its inherent linguistic characteristics, by the same token, looms large within that heritage. In this paper I will commence with a description of the term ¿Ebonics¿ and some information on the scientific state of affairs concerning its origins. Then I will proceed to some phonological aspects and conclude with a short look at its grammatical structure and idiosyncrasies. African-American English, the linguistic variety spoken by many African Americans in the United States of America, is a system with specific rules for combining sounds to form words, phrases and sentences. The first researchers who took an interest in this called it ¿Non-Standard Negro English¿, ¿Negro dialect¿ or ¿American Negro speech¿. However, because of the growing objections to the term Negro, other terms had to be found ¿ parallel to the changes ¿ in referring to black people. But even though the terms ¿African-American Vernacular English¿ (AAVE), ¿Black communications¿, Black dialect¿, ¿Black English¿, ¿Black Vernacular English¿, ¿African American language¿, ¿African American English¿ and, as Stanford Afro-American Linguist John Baugh named it, ¿Black Street Speech¿ (Baugh, 1983: 11), have all been used to label this variety over the past forty years, the word ¿Ebonics¿ (a blend of ebony and phonetics that was created in 1973 by a group of black scholars) is probably the most popular one today. This essay is to be understood as a brief survey on its grammatical and linguistic features.

Eine Tatsache, die Millionen Menschen teilen; Musik ist allgegenwärtig, begleitet unser ganzes Leben, steht häufig für Epochen und Lebensabschnitte. Sie bringt die Stimmung auf Feten und Emotionen in Filme. Wer kann sich schon ein Leben ohne Musik vorstellen? Diese Arbeit befasst sich aber nicht mit den emotionalen Komponenten von Musik, sie erklärt nicht, wie der Mensch bzw. das menschliche Gehirn in Gegenwart von Musik reagiert oder was die Faszination der Töne ausmacht. Hier soll es um ein reines (Geld-)Geschäft gehen: Die Musikindustrie. Eine Branche, die Menschen zu Millionären gemacht hat, aber auch Leben zerstört hat. Die Fragen, die in dieser Arbeit beantwortet werden sollen, befassen sich schlicht mit betriebswirtschaftlichen Fakten, hier im speziellen mit dem Musikmarkt im Internet, was bedeutet: Downloads im Internet. Auch der Verfasser selbst hat einen Teil der Entwicklung mitgemacht: Während er in den 1990er Jahren noch Kassetten oder später verstärkt CDs gekauft hatte, beschränkt er sich seit dem Jahr 2002 eher auf Musikdownloads im Internet. Seine gut bestückte CD-Sammlung ist seitdem stagniert, die Anzahl seiner Musikstücke allerdings nicht. Wie man Umfragen entnehmen kann, teilt er diese Erfahrung mit vielen Menschen. Abbildung 1 zeigt diese Downloadentwicklung der letzten Jahre in Zahlen und verdeutlicht die neuerlangte Wichtigkeit für die Musikindustrie in Deutschland und auch weltweit. Schon als Laie erkennt man, dass ein neues Denken für die Musikbranche von Nöten ist: Ein Hauptaugenmerk muss nun auf den digitalen Musikmarkt gerichtet werden, die ¿physischen¿ Produkte wie CDs bleiben zwar erhalten, verlieren aber an Bedeutung. Dass die Macher der Musikindustrie aber auch aufgrund von illegalen Downloads stöhnen, bleibt niemandem verborgen. Warum das konkret so ist, wie sich die Wertschöpfung im Laufe der Jahre verändert hat, wird in einem späteren Kapitel dargestellt.Die Arbeit wird zunächst einen Überblick über die Musikindustrie im Wandel der Zeit geben, von den traditionellen Anfängen im Grammophon-Zeitalter bis hin zum Absatzmarkt im Internet.
