Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Philosophy - Miscellaneous, grade: A+, University of Pittsburgh (USA), course: Senior Seminar in the History and Philosophy of Science, language: English, abstract: Most biologists resist positive claims about Lamarckian modes of inheritance, as they perceive such claims as threatening the hegemony of the Darwinian paradigm in which they operate. However, this hesitance may be misguided and unconstructive, should it arise from misconceptions about the relationship between contemporary ¿Lamarckian¿ discoveries and the views which Lamarck himself actually held. Given the recent revitalization of interest in Lamarckian evolutionary perspectives (Cairns et al. 1988, Hall 1991, Ewer 1996, 2004; Steele 1979, 1998; Jablonka and Lamb 2007), and the lingering ambiguity concerning what constitutes Lamarckian theses, it would be prudent to evaluate the relationship between contemporary Lamarckian theses and traditional Lamarckian positions. Scientists working in evolutionary fields tend to label as ¿Lamarckian¿ any claims that imply the inheritance of somatic mutations; adaptations derived through interaction between the organism and environment, and subsequently passed to offspring (the most famous example being the giraffe stretching its legs and neck to reach higher leaves). However, the relationship connecting contemporary ¿Neo-Lamarckian¿ ideas and traditional Lamarckian ideas is dubious at best, and conceptually misleading at worst, both for working scientists and casual laymen. For example, traditional Lamarckian inheritance acts through the whole organism or its parts, while modern Lamarckian inheritance tends to act on individual cells or even whole populations. The invocation of the label ¿Lamarckian¿ carries historical and conceptual baggage that I would like to disambiguate from recent, supposedly ¿Lamarckian¿ modes of inheritance. To accomplish this, I will reveal and clarify the evolutionary claims that Lamarck himself published, most notably in Jean-Batiste Lamarck¿s Philosophie Zoologique, and evaluate the relationship between his traditional claims, and more recent claims labeled as ¿Lamarckian¿ by contemporary scientists. This paper will provide an analysis of the conceptual interplay occurring between modern Lamarckian claims, and what Lamarck actually believed and published, via an investigation of the evolution of the term Lamarckian/Lamarckism from 1809 to the present; my conclusion, then, should be a fair appraisal of the relationship existing between Lamarck¿s actual claims and contemporary Neo-Lamarckian claims.

In dieser Arbeit soll der Versuch unternommen werden, Ursachen für die Entstehung von Musik und die evolutionäre Funktion in der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Menschen darzustellen. Dabei soll zunächst die Bedeutung der sogenannten Costly-Signal-Theory erörtert werden. Sie spielt eine zentrale Rolle für die Erklärung einer Reihe von ästhetischen Praktiken des Menschen wie z. B. das Tragen von Diamanten als Körperschmuck. An das Modell der Costly-Signal-Theory anknüpfend, werden Kunst und Musik als Vermittlungselement zwischen Konkurrenz bzw. Kooperation innerhalb von Gruppen erklärt. Danach soll auf einen vermutlichen (selbst-)bildenden Charakter von Kunst und Musik hingewiesen werden. Im zweiten Abschnitt werden Argumente für eine Hypothese der ästhetischen Default-Einstellungen entwickelt. Dabei soll gezeigt werden, dass es vermutlich evolutionär angelegte Beschaffenheiten des Menschen gibt, die dazu beitragen, dass einige wahrnehmbare Entitäten unabhängig von individueller Erfahrung als ästhetische Wertvoll erachtet werden. Schliesslich soll mit Rekurs auf beide Theorien der von Theodor W. Adorno geprägte Begriff der Kulturindustrie behandelt werden. Dabei geht es in erster Linie um die Beantwortung der Frage, unter welchen Bedingungen sich die in der Kulturindustrie vorherrschenden Prozesse als ein erfolgreiches Produktionskonzept von Musik als Ware entwickeln konnten. Dazu wird ein exemplarischer Popsong musiktheoretisch analysiert und auf Elemente hin untersucht, die mithilfe der evolutionären Ästhetik interpretiert werden können. Zusätzlich soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, was es bedeutet, wenn von einer Autonomie der Kunst gesprochen wird und inwieweit diese mit den funktionalen Aspekten der evolutionären Ästhetik betrachtet werden kann.

However, more recent developments such as the passing of the Deal, withdrawal of Left support and the vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha are not included. On April 8th 2008 The Hindu published an article titled ¿Potential consequences of a regional nuclear conflict¿ in which the author convincingly illustrates the dangers a nuclear- armed South Asia presents.1 The fact that both India and Pakistan, but of course also China, possess nuclear weapons has been an alarming reality since 1998. The relative progress that has been achieved in India- Pakistan relations should not lead one to forget that two conflicts in 1999 and 2001 could easily have escalated into a nuclear confrontation. India had embarked upon a civilian nuclear program right after her independence but the ¿weapon option¿ has always been present. Indiäs nuclear policy has been an evolutionary, sometimes painful process equally shaped by domestic and international factors. This paper attempts to analyse some of these factors and argues that the development of nuclear weapons was a logical, albeit not planned, consequence of them. It is interesting that even those in India fiercely opposed to nuclear weapons subconsciously seemed to have realised that Indiäs nuclear program could not be limited to civilian application forever. A constant in Indiäs nuclear policy is the strong wish to become and remain as independent as possible. For this independent nuclear policy India had to pay a high price. Isolated from international nuclear cooperation, confronted with sharp criticism and even sanctions, India had to rely on herself. While Indiäs success has been a great source of national pride Indiäs isolation in nuclear issues also contributed to a lack of strategic planning regarding Indiäs place in both the region and the world, and the role the nuclear weapons should or should not play in this. The (possible) India- US nuclear deal has provoked an intense debate among Indian actors that creates the chance that India will finally come to terms with its nuclear potential as she prepares for assuming the status of a world power.
