Aus beiden Theorien sind viele Effekte entstanden, wobei der split-attention effect sicherlich einer der bekanntesten ist. Dieser Effekt postuliert, dass die Lernergebnisse für den Lernenden umso besser ausfallen je näher Text und Bild beieinander sind. In einer aufwendigen Online-Untersuchung zum meteorologischen Phänomen ¿Die Entstehung von Blitzen¿ wird experimentell der Frage nachgegangen, ob es nicht auch andere Möglichkeiten zur Verbesserung des Lernerfolgs gibt, ohne Text und Bild nahe beieinander zu platzieren. Mit den neueren Faktoren der Wahrnehmungsorganisation bieten sich an dieser Stelle erstmalig Verknüpfungsmöglichkeiten an, besonders mit dem Faktor der Verbundenheit der Elemente und dem Faktor der gemeinsamen Region. Beide Faktoren werden kombiniert mit der räumlich nahen (integriertes Darstellungsformat) oder fernen (separiertes Darstellungsformat) Darstellung von Text und Bild, um so mit alternativen Möglichkeiten den Lernerfolg zu erhöhen. Zu diesem Zweck werden die Daten von 869 Versuchspersonen zur Beantwortung dieser Fragestellung, in Bezug auf die Lern- und Transferleistung, ausgewertet. Die Hypothese über den Vorteil des integrierten Darstellungsformats kann in dieser Diplomarbeit nicht bestätigt werden, was gegen die Allgemeingültigkeit des split-attention effect spricht. Unterstützend wird die Hypothese verifiziert, dass die verknüpften Darstellungsformate nicht zu schlechteren Lernergebnissen führen, als das integrierte Darstellungsformat. Zusätzlich wird die Hypothese bekräftigt, dass das konstruierte Material passend und die verwendete Animation ohne beschreibenden Text nicht selbsterklärend ist. Als letztes Ergebnis kann sich die Gruppe mit wenig selbsteingeschätztem Vorwissen nicht signifikant vom Rest der Stichprobe unterscheiden, was aber notwendig gewesen wäre zur Bestätigung der Hypothese, dass Novizen mehr kreative Lösungen generieren. Der negative Aspekt des split-attention effect kann damit auch mit anderen Mitteln umgangen werden, als mit der bisher favorisierten Herangehensweise der hohen räumlichen Nähe von Text und Bild. Der Einfluss und Nutzen der neueren Faktoren der Wahrnehmungsorganisation sollte in weiteren Studien zur Cognitive Load Theory untersucht werden.

In opposition to the classical point of view, Lakoff, Johnson, and other cognitive linguists believe this group of metaphors, among others, to be deeply embedded in the human conceptualisation system and to provide a means of reasoning about and structuring of entire, mostly abstract, domains in terms of other, more concrete, domains. Based on a limited amount of underlying image schemata, which are projected onto these domains, metaphors are employed in order to be able to understand large parts of the world surrounding us. Cognitive linguistics asks for the motivation and functional explanation of linguistic expressions. Beyond merely linguistic aspects, the cognitive approach is aiming high, since its targets are, among others, a new theory of categorisation (Lakoff 1987), Imagination (Johnson 1987: 139ff.), and, what would be a fundamental change in Western philosophy, meaning by the approach entitled as cognitive semantics In most of these and other disciplines of cognitive sciences, metaphor is one of the chief means by which these targets are tried to be accomplished. In linguistics, metaphor is an explanation for many expressions which were, on the traditional Objectivist account, viewed as being arbitrary. The general principle by which cognitive linguists explain thess expressions is as follows: Fundamental spatial and physical experiences yield certain image schemata. These schemata are mapped by means of metaphorical projection onto abstract concepts, which human beings would otherwise not be able to grasp. By metaphorical mapping, these concepts are understood, structured and given meaning. Therefore, metaphor is, on the cognitive account of meaning, far more than just a stylistic device: it is rather a way by which we understand our environment. Furthermore, metaphor is used, as accounted for by the cognitive approach, neither consciously nor intentionally. Contrary to the traditional account in which the speaker or the poet uses metaphorical expressions by intention, these are regarded as merely linguistic reflections of underlying means of understanding which are, for many abstract concepts, the only means available to us by which we can understand these concepts.

Setting of from the assumption that Freud's ground-breaking claims must have found their way into the complex, allusion-laden writing of his contemporary Joyce, it works out elements in the hallucinatory "Circe" chapter that refer to Freud's theory on dreams, concentrating specifically on the portrayal of Bloom. After an overview of the central aspects of Freud's Interpretation of Dreams, the structure of "Circe" will be introduced, justifying the analogy to dreams and tackling the general problem of applying psychoanalysis to literary criticism. The next chapter will take a closer look at Freud¿s idea of regression and enumerate elements that may be considered allusions to this in ¿Circe¿. Building on this, the final chapter will then be an attempt at a psychoanalytic reading of Bloom, also drawing upon some additional ideas from Freud¿s later theories.

It was caused by the politically forced imposition of a minimum wage in the sector for postal services which, in the view of many experts, provides a competitive advantage for the major postal service company ¿Deutsche Post World Net¿1 compared to its competitors. Then it happened that the ¿PIN ¿ Group AG¿ one of the most important domestic competitors of the ¿Deutsche Post World Net¿ was threatened by insolvency as its largest shareholder the publisher ¿Axel Springer AG¿ was no longer willing to invest money in the ¿PIN - Group AG¿. Additionally, many newspapers published by Axel Springer AG wrote articles against the imposition of a minimum wage for many weeks and published many interviews with economic experts warning about the negative effects of a minimum wage on the overall German labor market. Furthermore, political considerations, e.g. by the secretary of labor, to introduce a federal minimum wage in Germany even caused the chairmen of the eight leading economic research institutes in Germany to publish a letter in the newspaper ¿Das Handelsblatt¿2 where they advise politicians against the introduction of a federal minimum wage if (large) employment losses should be avoided. On the other hand, a few other researchers, experts and politicians like the ¿IAB¿3 as a specific labor market research institute believe that minimum wages even could create jobs and must not necessarily destroy them. This paper is motivated by this ongoing debate between economists and policymakers in the whole world. That is why in the first part of the paper the major theoretical framework which is used by economists to analyze and empirically assess the impacts of minimum wages on employment should be presented.

Er stellt sein Werk dabei selbst in direkten Bezug zu den neuzeitlichen Vertragstheorien von Thomas Hobbes¿ Leviathan, John Lockes Abhandlungen über die Regierung, Jean-Jaques Rousseaus Gesellschaftsvertrag und Immanuel Kants Metaphysische Anfangsgründe der Rechtslehre. Diese wiederum greifen vielfach auf Platons Politeia und Aristoteles¿ Politik zurück. Sozialethik ist Strukturenethik: Sie beschäftigt sich demnach mit den sich Menschen gebenden Strukturen und Ordnungen von Institutionen und Normen. Hierzu prüft sie diese nach anthroposophischen Massstäben und übt gegebenenfalls Kritik. Oberstes Prinzip ist hierbei der Mensch als Subjekt und Person. Sie erstreckt sich folglich über die gleichen Wirkungsbereiche wie Rawls¿ Gesellschaftstheorie. Gemeinsam stellen sie die Forderung nach sozialer Gerechtigkeit auf. Diese setzt sich aus den Gerechtigkeitsgrundformen der iustitia commutativa (Vertrags-Gerechtigkeit), iustitia distributiva (Teilhabe-Gerechtigkeit) und iustitia legalis (Gesetzes-Gerechtigkeit) zusammen. Darauf bauen die Dimensionen von Besitzstands-, Leistungs-, Chancen-, Bedürfnis- und Zukunftsgerechtigkeit auf. John Rawls schuf 1971 mit A Theory of Justice gleichermassen persönliches und philosophiegeschichtliches Hauptwerk. Auf durchaus utopisiernde Weise systematisiert er seine Idee einer gerechten ¿Sozialethik¿, die sich u. a. aus zuvor veröffentlichten Einzelaufsätzen speist und er später mehrfach modifiziert und auch revidiert hat. Versucht man eine kritische Wertung der Rawls¿schen Gerechtigkeitstheorie findet man als zentrale Beurteilungsbegriffe rasch ¿Praxisbezug¿ und ¿Praktizierbarkeit¿. Grund dafür ist, dass eine soziale Ethik um nützlich zu sein unmittelbaren Bezug zu einer gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit haben muss. Desweiteren sieht Rawls seine Ideen deontologisch. Das bedeutet, dass, was theoretisch aufgestellt wird, auch in der Praxis so sein soll. Er bleibt dabei jedoch theorielastig und öffnet dem Einzelnen, der von der Theorie profitieren soll nur unzureichende Handlungsperspektiven. Verantwortung wird den Institutionen zugebilligt. Diese Verwischung von Theorie und Praxis lässt A Theory of Justice leicht zum grandiosen Fehlschlag werden.

This leads to a redistribution of the recourses on economy-wide scale from industries and companies which use investor¿s capital inefficiently and destroy wealth to industries and companies which use investor¿s capital efficiently and create wealth. For corporate managers, wealth creation is fundamental to the economic survival of the firm. As suggested by Rapport (2006, pp.67-68) managers that fail (or refuse) to see the importance of this imperative in an open economy do so at the peril of the organization and their own careers. There are several analytical tools which can help to make wise decisions in this field. They range from traditional Dividend Discount model and Free Cash Flow (FCF) model to not so long ago created Economic Value Added (EVA) model of enterprise valuation. At the same time in line with theoretical models for valuing companies there is a market value for companies derived from market supply and demand for their stocks. In general, if we again refer to ¿one value principle¿ described in Grant (2003, p.106), both theoretical and market approaches have to lead to the same results. But in reality there is always some discrepancy in those two values which is a result of the influence of the number of factors. Identification and analysis of those factors is of key importance for investors to discover the most profitable investments and for the economy to ensure the most efficient use of capital. The discrepancy between theoretical and market value of the company, however, should not last forever. If it happens then capital market will be sending wrong signals to the investors about on the one hand industries with high potential which use capital productively and create economic profit and on the other hand industries with low potential who waste capital and achieve economic loss. This would lead to a situation when productive industries will face a deficit of capital and unproductive industries will face a surplus of capital. Such inefficient distribution of capital finally would be a threat for the development of a real sector of the economy.

Our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature" (Lakoff and Johnson 1980: 3). Taking this statement into account, one might ask where the boundaries between literary and ordinary language in terms of metaphoricity are or whether they exist at all. Metaphor is obviously neither an exclusively literary device in the sense of a defining feature of literature. Nevertheless, the scope of this paper is to show that literary metaphor has a special status not only because of its distinct features, but also due to a special way of processing and interpretation on the part of the reader. In order to situate these two aspects of literary metaphor within a theoretical literary framework, two basic approaches to the concept of literariness - a textual and a contextual one - are taken as a starting point. Building on this theoretical basis, the concept of literary metaphor is linked with each of these two definitions of literariness in order to show that it can be analyzed from a purely formal and stylistic as well as from a reader-related perspective, both contributing to the distinct characteristics of literary metaphor.

Beide Modelle, namentlich das der ¿Radikalen Demokratie¿ nach Chantal Mouffe und Ernesto Laclau auf der einen Seite und das der ¿Deliberativen Demokratie¿, in Deutschland hauptsächlich durch Jürgen Habermas bekannt, sind Konzeptionen von Demokratie. Beide Modelle beschreiben Demokratie als einen Prozess und erklären nach einer eingehenden Durchleuchtung die Idealform von Demokratie in Hinblick auf die gewonnen Ergebnisse. Die Lehre Wittgensteins, die nach Mouffe einen Beweis für die Unzulänglichkeit des deliberativen Modells bieten soll, birgt in Wahrheit eine Betrachtungsweise, die ein modernes, Gegensätze überschreitendes Verständnis von Demokratie liefen kann. Die einen Gegensatz zweier Modelle beschreibenden akademischen Lehren sind hinsichtlich einer modernen, sich ständig im Wandel befindlichen Politik nicht mehr zeitgemäss und heben sich gegenseitig auf. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist eine überarbeitete, erweiterte Fassung einer Hauptseminararbeit, die ich im Sommersemester 2007 dem Institut für Politikwissenschaft der Freien Universität Berlin im Rahmen eines Hauptseminars zur Agonalität des Politischen vorgelegt habe. In der Vorbemerkung seines Werkes über die ¿Geistesgeschichtliche Lage des heutigen Parlamentarismus¿ erkennt Carl Schmitt, dass das Charakteristikum der politischen Diskussion, nämlich das Argument im eigentlichen Sinne, im Begriff ist zu verschwinden. Für Schmitt war der ¿heutige Parlamentarismus¿ derjenige der frühen zwanziger Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts, der sich in einem Deutschland abspielte, das sich nach einer Niederlage im noch nicht allzu fernen ersten Weltkrieg neu definieren musste, und dessen politischer Kurs innerhalb der kommenden Jahre noch lange nicht festgelegt sein sollte. Three main determinants were identified during more than 30 years of research: 1. The size of the block 2. The legal and regulatory environment 3. The type of blockholder This work uses the acquisition of voting blocks by different types of acquirers (point 3) to determine how the shareholder structure in Germany (point 2) influences the valuation of a firm. It is demonstrated that the heterogeneity between block acquirers has to be taken into account, i.e. the size of a block (acquisition) itself (point 1) is not a distinctive enough instrument to determine valuation aspects. The main results are that a block acquisition by banks in Germany results in a negative value effect. A cumulated abnormal return (CAR) of -2.7% in the event-period [-20,20] is the (average) consequence of a block-acquisition by a bank. A strong and highly significant result is the positive valuation effect when hedge funds acquire blocks in their targets. Average cumulated abnormal return is 5% in the period [-20,-1]. Corporations as block-acquirer cause also positive CAR¿s (1%). No significant effects are found following the announcement by mutual funds, insurances and individual investors. The work proceeds as follows: In chapter 2 the literature on general corporate governance and especially the literature concerned with the relation between shareholder structure and valuation is reviewed. The data for this study and its legal sources is described in chapter 3 and chapter 4 gives a short descriptive statistic. The main chapter, chapter 5, starts with an explanation why the event-study methodology is especially eligible to answer the question of how blockholding influences valuation. Then the used methodology is described and the results of the empirical work presented. These are put in the context of the respective literature and research. Chapter 6 is a short summary of the most important findings and concludes the work.

For centuries, if not millennia, the changes in human society had occurred slowly and usually did not affect the lives of the majority of the people significantly. That is not to say that the event of a war, a draught or another catastrophe did not have devastating consequences and indeed it were predominantly the ordinary people who suffered the most if such an event took place. The conducting of life however remained unaffected and continued as it had before. Scientific inventions were rarely made and if they did happen it was only a small privileged section of society benefiting from them. Whatever influenced the life of most people occurred gradually, making it both possible and easy to adjust. It could even be argued that because these influences did not have an impact during a person¿s lifespan but developed over generations people failed to recognize them as changes at all. This has profoundly changed in the age of globalization that has already shaped the economic, social, and cultural lives of hundreds of millions of people. The majority of them may not be able to clearly identify these changes but they would all agree that something is happening in their lives. The feeling evolving out of this is one of uncertainty; there are both greater opportunities and greater risks. The previous era had already witnessed the transformation that industrialization brought about and it provoked sharp reactions. Industrialization not only transformed people¿s lives it changed the character of warfare as well and the 20th century had to endure the consequences. Technology brought many improvements but people start to realize that there is a flipside to everything. In a somewhat dialectical sense we cannot take the benefits of something while at the same time hope to avoid the ramifications. The world today has not just become smaller; it also turns out to be far more complex and diverse than any philosopher could have possibly imagined. Postmodernism can be conceived as a movement directed at both diversity and complexity but it may not provide a satisfying answer. Instead, its simple but yet powerful message may be that all we can do is accept the actual condition. This paper attempts to outline the development of postmodernism as a reaction to Modernity, and to analyze some of the implications this reaction brings about.

A study done by Sachs and Warner (1995), using a sample of 135 countries, has shown that there is a positive correlation between openness and growth, e.g. that trade liberalisation fosters economic performance. The assumptions and country categorisations of this study have been criticised by Rodriguez and Rodrik (2000); they concluded that low tariff rates do not necessarily imply higher growth rates but that tariff protection exceeding a certain level stifles growth. Dollar and Kray (cited in Santos-Paulino and Thirlwall, 2004) compared different sets of countries with each other and found out that changes in growth rates are positively correlated with the share of trade and thus greater openness has accelerated economic growth. This essay compares the foreign trade policy of Mexico and Costa Rica. Even though both countries pursued the same policies, some differences can be found. Both implemented a strategy of import-substituting industrialisation until the serious crisis at the beginning of the 1980s, followed by a period of extensive trade liberalisation. This was due to pressure put on by the international institutions such as IMF or World Bank. While Mexico opened up its market, Costa Rica went further and lowered the import barriers. They put a strong emphasis on attracting foreign direct investment. With an average annual growth rate of 4.78 percent in Costa Rica and 4.43 percent in Mexico over the last four decades both countries achieved a strong economic growth exceeding the average of all other Latin American countries. However a positive interrelation between openness and growth could not be found in this study. This essay is structured in four main parts. Section II of this paper deals with the fundamental comparability of Mexico and Costa Rica. Section III portrays the foreign trade policies of both countries and illustrates the main similarities and differences. The development of growth is outlined in Section IV. Section V concludes the paper.

Although Mao himself never denied his Marxist roots, a few significant deviations can be identified that, this essay suggests, have their origin in Mao's focus on practical realisation. While Marx undeniably provided the far more coherent theoretical framework for a proletarian revolution, this framework turned out to be practically useless whenever the ground conditions (such as an industrialised society with a conscious proletariate) were not met. Since all successfull revolutions of the 20th century took place in societies where according to classical Marxism they should not have, Maoism as an ideological and revolutionary guideline that actually worked in unfavourable conditions of underdevelopment and dependency became far more appealing.
