Rhetoric once had a kingly position. Deposed and transformed, it is effective today under changed conditions and other names. A barely discovered, yet productive ferment of postmodernism is the rhetorical use of reason. This thesis is one of the motives of reasearch fo Rhetorica II, which follows up on Rhetorica I with a re-reading of Aristotle, Quintilian and Augustine. Two rhetorically conceived models of the conjectural use of reason are brought to light in theis epistemic-historical study: Vico's Metaphysics and Lévi-Strauss' Mythologica. Both prove to be guiding references in finding answers – based on principles that are, however, not of scientific-dogmatic nature – to those questions asked by reason, which are dependent on conjecture and combination, disentanglement and relation, and communication and emotion.With reference to Vico, rhetoric was already a driving force in the change of paradigm from the rationally directed metaphysics of the ideal world to the rhetorically conceived criticism of reason as a reconstruction of the mondo civile. rhetorica II shows that Lévi-Strauss abides by Vico's productive concept of reason and understands the myth to be a spiritual product of rhetorical origin. This approach makes it possible to enter wild thinking into the history of reason. Through Rhetorica II, conjectural rationality regains its place in the universe of knowledge. The book invites philosophers to take a new look at rhetoric and outlines o philosophy of finiteness. It advises us to strengthen the competence of reason regarding contingency in order to deal with the threats of the present age.

This edition of the manuscript of the ›Functionenlehre‹ (Theory of Functions) written by an unknown copyist, differs from the first edition (1930) in that among other things Bolzano’s original work has been incorporated here consistently. In the introduction, mathematical concepts and propositions such as for example the uniform continuity theorem, the Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem and the determinable functions theorem, whose position in Bolzano’s works did require some explanation, are discussed in greater detail here.

This volume begins with Fichte's Introductory Lectures to his first official course at the newly established University of Berlin, beginning in the Fall of 1810. These are followed by lectures from the Winter Semester of 1810/11 on The Facts of Consciousness, which, in Fichte's later period, served the function of leading one from the standpoint of ordinary consciousness to the level of science, thereby replacing the earlier (›Platner‹) lectures on Logic and Metaphysics. The ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ of 1811 is here published for the first time. This version of the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ begins with the thought of the highest possible form of being, i.e. the absolute, and, using Spinoza and Schelling" /> as examples, demonstrates the impossibility of establishing any ontological philosophy. A final example of Fichte's »popular« lectures is furnished by the manuscript of his lectures from the Summer Semester of 1811 ›Concerning the Vocation of the Scholar‹. This volume also includes an Address delivered in conjunction with the promotion of new professors (February 1811) and Fichte's Reflections on the rectoral election of 1811. Fichte's social activities during the years 1811/12 are documented by some doggerel verses he delivered when he became speaker of the ›Christian-German Social Club‹ (Tischgesellschaft) and a record of a meeting of the same. This volume concludes with Fichte's recommendation of a proposal put forward by »Turnvater« Jahn concerning the establishment of the German student fraternities.

The end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the defeat of Austria in 1805 and of Prussia in 1806, tore Fichte from his scientific studies and led him to apply himself to political problems. He opposed jingoistic Prussian patriotism, offered to serve as orator for the Prussian army, and, in the wake of the debacles of Jena and Auerstedt, drafted plans for a »Republik der Deutschen«, which would be in harmony with the advance of knowledge. His diary entries record important events during his flight from Berlin to Königsberg. At the beginning of 1807 he obtained a professorship at the University of Königsberg, which gave him the occasion to produce a new version of the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹. In Copenhagen he revised, among other works, his ›Bericht über die bisherige Schicksale der Wissenschaftslehre, darin die Abfertigung Schellings.‹

This volume contains approximately 240 letters in which Reuchlin deals with questions pertaining to grammar and exegetics among other things and in his capacity as a judge of the Swabian League corresponds with litigants. The private correspondence during these years focused on Reuchlin’s conflicts with the Faculty of Theology in Cologne regarding his expert assessment of Jewish literature which he had defended in his pamphlet ›Augenspiegel‹ in 1511 against the hostilities of Johannes Pfefferkorn’s. Reuchlin’s official correspondence on the other hand dealt with various protracted court cases; this is presented in the appendices, in context, each case supplemented by overviews of the oral proceedings. This also includes a chronological list of all the letters which illustrates the sequence and the juxtaposition of the humanistic correspondence and the official correspondence.
