The lectures which Bernard Bolzano held from 1805 up to his dismissal in January of 1820 as a professor for Catholic religious education at the University of Prague in the context of the philosophical studies were published anonymously in 1834 in a four-volume edition with which Bolzano was very unhappy. ›Der frühe Fichte‹ (The Early Fichte) was not published until 35 years after the scheduled date of publication, since the outbreak of the Second World War was not exactly conducive to inspiring an interest in philosophical reflection. In the following years most of the copies printed were destroyed in fires. The unchanged work deals with the early philosophy of Fichte, who is described as a level-headed philologist, whose main achievement according to the author was dispensing with metaphysical speculations at that time. He did however accuse Fichte of making excessive use of these later on.

This applies in particular to the ›Fama‹ and the ›Confessio‹; which describe the life of the founder, Christian Rosenkreuz, and call for theological, scholarly and also political reforms. The ›Chymical Wedding‹ is one of Andreae’s long early works, which incorporates an allegory of the alchemical Ergon into a visionary frame story. The ›Reformation‹ is the German translation of an Italian satire by Trajano Boccalini. In the introduction, Roland Edighoffer, who consulted all the available editions and transcripts for this edition and gives a critical analysis of the variants, discusses the difficult question of Andreae’s part in the Rosicrucian phenomenon.

This volume contains Fichte's ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ of 1804, as presented in 28 lectures between April 16 and June 28. Since Fichte's own manuscript is apparently lost, it was deemed necessary to reproduce the two surviving versions of this text on facing pages. Neither of these texts is authentic. One is the text published by I. H. Fichte in 1834, apparently based upon his father's manuscript. The other is a copy, in a still unidentified hand, which contains some gaps and occasional, small errors of transcription. Printing these two complete texts on facing pages makes it possible, for the first time, for the reader to compare the two complete texts and to assume for himself the responsibility of deciding upon the original wording. This device was made necessary on editorial and critical grounds, which also made it necessary to interrupt the otherwise strictly observed chronological order of the edition.

The edition by Wilhelm Bolin and Friedrich Jodl was published by our company for the first time between 1903 and 1911 in 10 volumes. Among the works written in his youth, this is the first publication of two of them, both of which are indispensable for gaining insight into Feuerbach‹s (1804-1872) philosophical development: his dissertation from 1828 and the ›Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit‹ (Thoughts on Death and Immortality) published anonymously in 1830, a work which denied Feuerbach a university career for all of his life. The youthful works contain a chronological table as well as a bibliography of the works by and about Feuerbach. This reprint contains previously unpublished Feuerbach letters which have been added to the edition of the letters from and by Feuerbach, edited by W. Bolin and published in 1904. Among the letters which have been added there are 18 addressed to Arnold Ruge, and these provide some insight into the Left or Young Hegelians who were in the process of formation.

Edelmann (1698–1767) was a forerunner of the German Enlightenment. He stood up quite openly for the English deists and their religion of reason, which he associated with the idea of logos and the commandment of love. He was the first to invoke Spinoza and his radical criticism of the Bible. Edelmann was vigorously opposed to every kind of orthodoxy and ultimately denied the historical Christian faith. His polemic pamphlets are examples of classic polemics. In the course of the Edelmann'schen Streites (Edelmann dispute), his books were burned by the hangman. It was because of the Brethren church and his work on the Berleburg Bible translation that Edelmann became more open in relation to the scriptures and eventually had a purely human image of Christ. This edition of his works contains facsimile reprints of the original editions of all the writings Edelmann published himself as well as a reprint of his autobiography and previously unpublished works from his literary estate. Walter Grossmann has provided an introduction for each work.

Reuchlin‹s ‹Kunst der Kabbala‹ (On the Art of the Kabbalah) was published in 1517 in Hagenau by Anshelm and is dedicated to Pope Leo X. In this work, Reuchlin summed up his research and his thoughts on the Jewish secret doctrine of the Kabbalah. This work is a continuation of his previous thoughts from ‹De verbo mirifico‹. It is set up as a dialogue, divided into three books, of which the first and the third deal with issues surrounding the Kabbalah whereas the second book deals with Pythagorean thought. In its time, this work was admired more – or also rejected more – than it was properly understood by scholars. Nevertheless it could contain an important key to Reuchlin‹s thinking and his view of the world. This work, which is not easy to understand, will be published in the original Latin in a text-critical, edited version and with a transation into Modern High German which will be followed by a comprehensive interdisciplinary commentary.

The ›Allgemeine Übersicht‹ (›Abhandlungen zur Erläuterung des Idealismus der Wissenschaftslehre‹); (Treatises on the Explanation of the Idealism of the Theory of Science) 2nd edition 1809, was published anonymously between November 1796 and July 1798 in the ›Philosophical Journal‹ edited by Niethammer and Fichte . Schelling intervened in the dispute surrounding Kantian philosophy in order to take a stand against the conservative Kantians and against Reinhold and to indicate his own position. The edition incorporates five different versions of the first printing and gives a bibliographical analysis of the literature which Schelling quoted or to which he alluded. Schelling’s scathing criticism of Schlossers anti-Kantian missives, which had caused a stir (Schiller: »miserable emptiness and platitude«, is also in the context of the Kant debate. The editorial report deals with this controversy. In his review entitled ›Ueber Offenbarung und Volksunterricht‹ (On Revelation and National Education) of Niethammer›s dissertation ›De Revelatione‹; Schelling enlarges upon Niethammer‹s criticism of the concept of revelation, which excludes this concept from the use of reason and restricts it to an educational usefulness. The subsequent atheism dispute was forthcoming.

The ›Triumph der Philosophie‹; (Triumph of Philosophy) written by the Altdorf scholar Nicolaus Taurellus (1547–1606); first published in Basel in 1573, is one of the first treatises on Aristotelian metaphysics during the Reformation period in Germany. Harshly criticized by his theological contemporaries because of his basic theory that philosophy itself is the basis of faith, Enlightenment scholars such as Pierre Bayle (1647–1706) and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) called him an outstanding philosopher. Taurellus' treatise, of which two editions were published by 1617, set a precedent for the early modern tradition of the speculative doctrine of God.

Between April 1784 and June 1788, the draft for a ‹General Code of Law for the Prussian State‹ was published in Berlin. The advance notice it was given called upon the public to give their evaluation of this and encouraged the scholars of legal philosophy in Germany and other countries to engage in a thorough criticism, for which substantial prizes were offered. Included in the new edition in 6 volumes is an account of the development and further revision of the draft. There is a list of critical suggestions (monita), made by the courts, the administrative authorities, the three estates, and private individuals.
