The Supplement Volume for the edition of the ‹Historik‹ (Outline of the Principles of History) contains the Droysen bibliography, i.e. a list of those writings which he himself had published and those works which were published posthumously, of collections and works from the literary estate, and finally of the reprints and translations of his works. In addition, there are lists of the three parts of his literary remains (Berlin-Dahlem, Halle/Saale, Jena) and a list of other autographs (mainly letters). Droysen‹s ‹Katalog meiner Arbeiten‹ (Catalogue of My Works) (1859) is an important document which is being published for the first time. It contains commentaries on his writings and in addition the so-called »graue Literatur« (grey literature). A list of the portraits, four of which are reproduced in this volume, is followed by a selection of research literature on Droysen as a person and on his work.

These two volumes contain 50 textes from the ambit of history, for example essential material on the history of the development of Droysen‹s ‹Historik‹ (Outline of the Principles of History). This includes essays on the theory of history,memorandums on the educational system and on academic life, key book reviews, precedent-setting lectures, and in addition poems, personal letters and excerpts from his personal file, and mainly the theoretical introductions to his lectures on history, for example on ancient history, (in various versions). The texts were written between 1826 and 1882, predominantly in the period before 1857, when Droysen held his lecture on the ‹Historik‹ for the first time. 30 of these texts have not been published previously, and those which were already published were mostly published in a remote spot where they received no attention. The editor‹s annotations provide evidence of the quotations and references to literature, identify allusions and refer to parallel passages in other Droysen texts.

Der Historiker Johann Gustav Droysen (1808-1884) bleibt bis heute einer der am meisten diskutierten Theoretiker seines Fachs. Nur selten wird jedoch die Frage gestellt, unter welchen konkreten historischen Bedingungen Droysens methodisches und geschichtsphilosophisches Hauptwerk, die "Historik", überhaupt entstanden ist. In seiner Studie aus dem Jahr 2003 führt Stephan Paetrow den Nachweis, dass die akademische, gesellschaftliche und politische Atmosphäre der verschlafenen Universitätsstadt Jena, in die Droysen nach der gescheiterten Revolution von 1848 unfreiwillig geraten war, nicht unerheblich zum Gelingen der theoretisch-methodischen Neubegründung der Geschichtswissenschaft in der "Historik" beigetragen hat. Im Hintergrund steht dabei eine These Reinhart Kosellecks: Grundlegende Perspektivenwechsel in der Geschichtsschreibung sind Sache der "Besiegten", Sache derer, die zuvor durch tiefgehende biographische Krisen zu einer Revision ihres Bildes vom Gang der Geschichte genötigt wurden. Das Buch versteht sich als Beitrag zur Historiographiegeschichte.

Die Bibliothek der Historischen Gesellschaft von Johann Gustav Droysen bildet den ältesten Bestandteil der Zweigbibliothek Geschichte der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Diese Büchersammlung wurde ab 1860 angelegt und stellte nach Droysens Tod am 19. Juni 1884 den ersten umfangreichen geschlossenen Bücherfundus dar, der an die Bibliothek des durch Julius Weizsäcker am 30. Januar 1885 gegründeten Historischen Seminars gelangte. Ihre Rückerschliessung machte aufwendige Untersuchungen am Bestand selbst nötig.Wenn als Ergebnis nun zum 200. Geburtstag Johann Gustav Droysens ein Katalog der einstigen Bibliothek seiner Historischen Gesellschaft vorgelegt werden kann, so versteht sich dieser in erster Linie als wissenschaftshistorischer Beitrag zu den Anfängen des Historischen Seminars und seiner Bibliothek, im weiteren Sinn aber auch als Reminiszenz an die reiche Tradition der Berliner Alma Mater, nicht zuletzt im Hinblick auf ihr bevorstehendes Jubiläum 2010.

In 1964, the first volume of series I (works) was published. With the publication of volume 10, the editors have now completed the edition of Fichte's works. Volume 10 contains publications of the last five years of Fichte's life. The famous ›Addresses to the German Nation‹ that Fichte delivered publicly in Berlin in 1807/8 succeed the ›Grundzüge des gegenwärtigen Zeitalters‹ and the ›Anweisung zum seeligen Leben‹ and thus form the last part of the trilogy which marks Fichte's change of direction towards a Philosophy of History. Following Pestalozzi, Fichte appeals for a new education of the German people in order to achieve an intellectual reformation. At the same time, this work is shaped by Fichte's intention to participate – within the bounds of his possibilities – in the course of political events. Fichte connected Germany's loss of political autonomy due to Napoleon's dominance with an imminent intellectual decline in Germany, and was therefore urged to take action. He realised his right and duty to speak out. Additionally, this volume contains Fichte's adaptations of Petrarca and Camoenes, his elaborated final lecture of 1810 ›Wissenschaftslehre in ihrem allgemeinen Umrisse‹; the speech ›Ueber die einzig mögliche Störung der akademischen Freiheit‹ (which Fichte delivered when he took up his office as headmaster at Berlin University in 1811), as well as his two summer term lectures of 1812 ›Über die Bestimmung des Gelehrten‹. The volume is completed by 14 reviews from 1788.

This volume contains Fichte's ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ of 1804, as presented in 28 lectures between April 16 and June 28. Since Fichte's own manuscript is apparently lost, it was deemed necessary to reproduce the two surviving versions of this text on facing pages. Neither of these texts is authentic. One is the text published by I. H. Fichte in 1834, apparently based upon his father's manuscript. The other is a copy, in a still unidentified hand, which contains some gaps and occasional, small errors of transcription. Printing these two complete texts on facing pages makes it possible, for the first time, for the reader to compare the two complete texts and to assume for himself the responsibility of deciding upon the original wording. This device was made necessary on editorial and critical grounds, which also made it necessary to interrupt the otherwise strictly observed chronological order of the edition.

The second volume contains those works which document Andreae’s academic development at the University of Tübingen (›Vale Academiae Tubingensi‹; ›Mora Philologica‹); and his funeral sermons for his mother, brother and those friends who became especially important to him in the development of his unorthodox, satirical spirituality: Tobias Hess and Jonathan Wense. Following his appointment to a professorship in philosophy at the University of Erlangen, Fichte had to prepare lectures for the summer semester of 1805, including the ›Institutiones omnis philosophiae‹; which, like the Jena lectures on Logic and Metaphysic, were conceived as an introduction to the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹. Particularly interesting is the portion of this text devoted to elaborations of formal and higher (methodological) logic. For more advanced students, Fichte lectured on the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹. He wished this version to be understood as the fourth successive version of the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹; counting from the winter of 1804. In this ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ Fichte presented his transcendental theory step by step, in a ongoing dialog with Schelling's ›Philosophie und Religion‹ (1804), as the overcoming of speculative metaphysics.
