Baur trat an die noch unbewältigten Stoffgebiete der Kirchen- und Dogmengeschichte heran, um in ihnen die Entfaltung der christlichen Idee zu begreifen, der Idee, die für ihn der Höhepunkt ist auf dem Weg des menschlichen Geistes zur Erkenntnis seiner selbst. An Grösse des Entwurfs, an Kraft der interpretatorischen Durchdringung des Einzelnen mit der Einsicht in das Ganze wurde Baur von keinem Späteren – auch nicht von Harnack – übertroffen. Baurs Probleme sind in der Forschung bis heute lebendig. Die vorliegende Ausgabe macht Hauptwerke Baurs wieder zugänglich, die von Kennern durch Einführungen zu jedem Band mit der gegenwärtigen Forschungslage konfrontiert werden.

Edelmann (1698–1767) was a forerunner of the German Enlightenment. He stood up quite openly for the English deists and their religion of reason, which he associated with the idea of logos and the commandment of love. He was the first to invoke Spinoza and his radical criticism of the Bible. Edelmann was vigorously opposed to every kind of orthodoxy and ultimately denied the historical Christian faith. His polemic pamphlets are examples of classic polemics. In the course of the Edelmann'schen Streites (Edelmann dispute), his books were burned by the hangman. It was because of the Brethren church and his work on the Berleburg Bible translation that Edelmann became more open in relation to the scriptures and eventually had a purely human image of Christ. This edition of his works contains facsimile reprints of the original editions of all the writings Edelmann published himself as well as a reprint of his autobiography and previously unpublished works from his literary estate. Walter Grossmann has provided an introduction for each work.

Krause‹s concept of freedom and his theory of the state and social studies cannot be separated from his study of the Freemasons, a study whose background was based on the philosophy of history. In 1808, this prompted Krause to reverse his position. Although up to that time he had regarded the path Napoleon had begun to take in having the world united into one state as the beginning of the third and last epoch of human history, he then replaced »Napoleon« as a historical figure with the »Masonic brotherhood« and the »world state« with the »brotherhood of man«. The volume contains seven essays by Krause on this subject, including a print-ready, previously unpublished manuscript entitled ›Frohkunde an die Menschheit‹ (1832) which dealt with the nature and the internal organization of the planned brotherhood of man.
