In the 19th century, a Copernican turn took place in medicine with the development of the cell theory. We take it completely for granted today that the human body is made up of cells which determine its structure and its function. But this doctrine has only been defining medical thinking for 150 years and it replaced theories which had been valid for an inconceivable 2000 years. The author interprets this transition as a paradigm shift, and she explores it in the works of German, English and French doctors in the 18th and 19th century. She sheds light on the influence of philosophy, in particular the impact of Kan‹s and Schelling‹s ideas. This study of the philosophical foundations of modern medicine is addressed to philosophers, science historians and medical physicians.

In 1964, the first volume of series I (works) was published. With the publication of volume 10, the editors have now completed the edition of Fichte's works. Volume 10 contains publications of the last five years of Fichte's life. The famous ›Addresses to the German Nation‹ that Fichte delivered publicly in Berlin in 1807/8 succeed the ›Grundzüge des gegenwärtigen Zeitalters‹ and the ›Anweisung zum seeligen Leben‹ and thus form the last part of the trilogy which marks Fichte's change of direction towards a Philosophy of History. Following Pestalozzi, Fichte appeals for a new education of the German people in order to achieve an intellectual reformation. At the same time, this work is shaped by Fichte's intention to participate – within the bounds of his possibilities – in the course of political events. Fichte connected Germany's loss of political autonomy due to Napoleon's dominance with an imminent intellectual decline in Germany, and was therefore urged to take action. He realised his right and duty to speak out. Additionally, this volume contains Fichte's adaptations of Petrarca and Camoenes, his elaborated final lecture of 1810 ›Wissenschaftslehre in ihrem allgemeinen Umrisse‹; the speech ›Ueber die einzig mögliche Störung der akademischen Freiheit‹ (which Fichte delivered when he took up his office as headmaster at Berlin University in 1811), as well as his two summer term lectures of 1812 ›Über die Bestimmung des Gelehrten‹. The volume is completed by 14 reviews from 1788.

The ›Allgemeine Naturgeschichte und Theorie des Himmels‹ (Universal Natural History and Theory of Heaven) belongs somewhere between natural science and natural philosophy. Based on the findings of Newtonian physics, this work attempts to provide a mechanistic explanation of the universe which, according to Kant, is nevertheless compatible with the standards of religion. Studies are still disputing whether or not this was really Kant's goal and the extent to which he reached it. The controversy surrounding this work, which gave an explanation of the origins of the planetary system which was basically correct and which later on became famous under the name »Kant-Laplace'sche Theorie« (Kant-Laplace theory), does not always seem to be based on an adequate understanding of the text. This index, along with a concordance, provides a tool for an appropriate interpretation of the work, in addition to its significance for an analysis of Kant's linguistic development.

The critical turn opened up a fundamentally new approach to tradition and its foundation in antiquity, above all to Plato and Neoplatonism, to the Platonic tradition among the Church Fathers, Augustine in particular, and to the Renaissance. Weigel‹s Christological works met with interest outside of the German-speaking countries as well very early on. A Dutch translation of the homiletic pamphlet ›Von Betrachtung des Lebens Christi‹ (A Reflection on the Life of Christ), written in 1574, was published in 1647 and 1686. An English translation of the comprehensive work ›Vom Leben Christi‹ (On the Life of Christ), written in 1578, which advocated religious freedom and rejected the disputes between the confessions, in part with a purpose of polemic, was published in 1648. There are only extant fragments of the ›De vita Christi‹; which is in the appendix, a compilation in German based on various Weigel texts.

The present volume contains the results of over thirty years of research in psychosis. Gisela Pankow began this work in 1956 with the first French edition of ›Dynamic Structurization in Schizophrenia‹; a book which has been out of print and is now availabe in a revised German version for the first time since 1957 (chapters I and II). Chapter III describes new perspectives an research: ›Schizophrenia and Family Structure‹; ›Structurization Images and Phantasms in Psychosis‹; ›The Importance of the Concept of Form in the Approach of Psychosis‹. In chapter IV, Dr. Pankow elaborates on the concepts of rejection and identity and their relationship. Pursuing her literary analyses, she discovered the world of »fusion« and in chapter V interpretes two novellas by Elsa Morante and the novel ›Love in Times of the Cholera‹ by Garcís Marquez. In chapter VI the author gives a less systematic account of the state research on schizophrenia in the United States towards the middle of the 1950s. At a time when the work of American psychiatrists and psychoanalysts was nearly unknown in France, the author was in contact with the most important representatives of these disciplines, namely Rosen, Grotjahn, Frieda Fromm-Reichmann, Phyllis Grennacre, Bateson, Flanders Dunbar and others. This retrospective is followed by a long interview which clearly illustrates her Pankow's position in 1978. After the descent into the »Abyss of psychosis«, two shorter stories about true and false schizophrenia conclude this volume.

Kant's logic lectures are anything but a special course of lectures on the problems of logic. They are more like a first introduction to philosophy in general and in a unique way they reflect the intellectual world of the German Enlightenment. In the third volume of the Kant Index, a transcript of such a logic lecture is broken down lexically for the first time. As a result of this, the language and terminology of Enlightenment philosophy in the 18th century are readily accessible. The Logik Blomberg (Blomberg Logic) goes back to the beginning of the seventies and is thus one of the earliest of the completely extant transcripts. Together with the first two volumes of the Kant Index, this index volume is an important resource for understanding the variety of references in the lecture notes, the compendium which Kant used and the reflections in the literary remains on logic. The repeatedly discussed questions pertaining to the reliability, the origins and the age determination of the transcripts are thus at least somewhat closer to being solved. With the aid of comprehensive lists of typographical errors and errors in transcription, emendations and conjectures, several hundred errors in Volume XXIV of the Academy edition have also been corrected on the basis of the transcript.
