The year 1541 as well was characterized by the religious negotiations between the Catholics and the Protestants. Only six weeks after his return from Worms, Melanchthon went to the Diet of Regensburg in the middle of March, which went on until the end of July. He injured his hand when the carriage in which he was travelling overturned, and this injury hampered him for a long time. During the religious discussion, Melanchthon wrote expert reports, votums and letters. He was very happy when his friend Joachim Camerarius was given a professorship at the University of Leipzig in the fall.

300 letters from three years document the variety of Melanchthon’s activities and relationships. In the wake of longer absences in the previous years, he rededicated himself predominantly to his teaching duties and published works on rhetoric, dialectic, Aristotelian politics and mathematics. This volume contains the programmatic prefaces to these works. Moreover, Melanchthon had to publish the Augsburg Confession and its Apology. His tireless struggle to find a satisfactory formulation of the doctrine of justification finds echoes in the correspondence of the time. Shortly after the completion of the Apology, Melanchthon published the commentary on Romans (1532), which Melanchthon dedicated to the Archbishop Albert of Mainz. The university professor also continued to concern himself with political questions, chiefly in the form of official opinions. The newly created Smalcaldic League had developed interests in establishing relations with France and England. Remarkable opinions cover such matters as church property and ecclesiastical foundations, the calling of a general council, the treatment of Anabaptists, and the divorce of Henry VIII of England. After Zwingli’s death and thanks to Martin Bucer’s initiatives, progress was made in clarifying the question at the Lord’s Supper. This important volume has been enhanced (in comparison to the digests) with fourteen newly discovered documents. With regard to text-critical matters, this volume includes thirty-five letters to Joachim Camerarius published on the basis of the original manuscripts for the first time.

After the end of the Schmalkaldic War, the reorganization of the territories began. 233 letters show the many uncertainties involved in the altered political situation as well as Melanchthon’s state of mind as he received many offers from other places but still felt home was where he could be with his friends. Melanchthon was much sought after as a conversation partner when it came to planning the university system. He took part in negotiations regarding the foundation of a university in Jena but was then summoned to Wittenberg where deliberations were in progress regarding the reopening of the university. He was lonely there without his friends, since he missed being able to exchange ideas with his colleagues. However the pressure put on him to write his ›Dialectics‹ kept him there. He anxiously monitored the incipient Diet of Augsburg. Melanchthon was so worried that at the end of the year he dreamed that the Elector Maurice wanted to reduce Wittenberg to rubble.

After the journeys of the past years to diets and religious discussions, Melanchthon spent the year 1542 almost exclusively in Wittenberg. It was from here that he followed the diets in Speyer and Nuremberg and exchanged information with the persons with whom he corresponded. With great anxiety he observed the Turks in Hungary and Joachim of Brandenburg’s military campaign against them. Many of the letters from Melanchthon’s everyday life show how much influence he had; in addition to numerous letters of recommendation, his involvement in filling several vacancies for positions at schools or positions as clergymen and in founding the University of Königsberg is well documented.

This second volume of texts touches upon central questions of the history of the Reformation, including the right of resistance, the Peasants’ War, Luther’s controversy with Erasmus, and the founding of the school in Nuremberg. As in the first volume, all the sources for each text are clearly introduced and, as necessary, briefly described. In this way one obtains a picture of the various ways in which individual pieces were disseminated. Some may be one-of-a-kind, like the original version of a letter in Greek describing Luther’s marriage; others enjoyed up to thirty-five reprints, as in the case of prefaces to the edition of Terence or to the biblical book of Proverbs. The variant readings have been placed in several different sections of the apparatus, depending upon whether they concern earlier versions of the original autograph, text-critical remarks, or changes by later readers, copyists and editors. The citations and literary allusions have been carefully tracked down and placed in a fourth section of the apparatus.

This volume focuses on the efforts to settle the religious dispute. Melanchthon and other theologians were important advisors in the preparations for the religious discussion announced by the emperor; among other things, they wrote expert reports as a basis for a common position on the Protestant side. In the spring of 1540, Melanchthon was in the Schmalkaldic Diet. The summer was overshadowed by Landgrave Philipp of Hesse’s bigamy, which made Melanchthon so ill that he could not go the negotiations at Hagenau. From October on Melanchthon was in Worms in order to take part in the religious discussion.

The first volume of texts documents Melanchthon’s development from a seventeen-year-old follower of Reuchlin in Tübingen through the stormy beginnings of his Wittenberg professorship and concludes with the consolidation of the Reformation there after Luther’s return from the Wartburg. The volume offers a complete tradition history of each text with appropriate evaluations and summaries. Subsequently, the older editions such as the Corpus Reformatorum are thoroughly corrected and improved upon. For example, Luther’s letters from the Wartburg have been corrected on the basis of a new text-critical reading. Citations and allusions are also verified.

In the 18th century there was a surprisingly large amount of interest in the thinker, author and human being David Hume (1711–1776); and this interest reflected the entire range of requirements and goals of the German Enlightenment. To begin with, the focus was on Hume‹s theories of the philosophy of religion, theories which were rejected without exception and often only polemically repudiated. Just when there was a chance of having an objective assessment of Hume‹s work, Kant revolutionized philosophy, and Hume was seen merely as the factor which triggered Kant‹s metaphysics. Just under 100 sources, most of which have not been published for more than two centuries, show how an Enlightenment interested in the welfare of society had evolved from the new orientation of a social class of scholars and educated people and how then the idea originated to provide the common man with the new findings on natural science so that these could be put into practice. The early debates about the goals and the means of enlightening the common man are fascinating, since it was in these that for the first time ideas were expressed stating that in addition to economic enlightenment it would be necessary to create an entire educational movement which was aimed at changing the mentality of the farmers. This also meant a change in the literary instruments of the Enlightenment of the common people.

The first reception of Kant directly after publication of the ›Critique of Pure Reason‹ is one of the most momentous and fascinating stages in the recent history of philosophy. Surprisingly not much research has been done on this. This volume is the result of an exhibition of early Kantianism at the University of Jena in 1993. It helps to make the source material more easily accessible. Chapters on Ch. G. Schütz, C. Ch. E. Schmid, the ›Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung‹; Reinhold, Schiller, Hufeland among others provide new insight into this early stage of Kant's reception.
