Jacques Offenbach is undoubtedly best known for his operettas. Yet, being a virtuoso cellist from a young age, it was inevitable that the composer would write for this instrument. His cello duets were born out of the desire to create works that combine beauty, technical brilliance and a great sense of fun. A vivid imagination comprises the suites that make up Cours méthodique de duos. The works contain much musical parody, containing references to mountain choruses and funeral processions, among others, and imitating - with the cello - the sounds of other orchestral instruments, such as the French horn. These works also show off Offenbach's sheer knowledge of music, with nods to the styles of Verdi and Paganini, and the compendium as a whole takes into account the technical growth of the performer without restricting the formal structure of the music. Performing the works are acclaimed Italian cellists Andrea Noferini and Giovanni Sollima. Noferini originally studied with the great violinist Arthur Grumiaux, and his discographical successes include 'CD of the month' from Naxos; Sollima, also a composer by profession, received a 5-star review from Amadeus for his recording of Neapolitan Cello Concertos on the Glossa label. No other great composer left so many works for piano duet as Franz Schubert: altogether 54 (32 of which have an opus number) including fantasias, dances, marches, variations, rondos, sonatas, etc. Among Schubert’s circle of friends, making music was a much beloved pastime. And even today musicians love to work with these pieces. In the three Henle Urtext volumes featuring Schubert’s four-hand piano music, the works are arranged chronologically. Volume III contains nine pieces dating from the last three years of Schubert’s life, thus his mature works in this genre. This includes the famous Fantasie in f minor D 940 (see also the individual edition HN 180) and the equally beloved Duo in a minor D 947, which was first published posthumously with the nickname “Lebensstürme”. Both date from spring 1828.

To this day, Brahms’ Hungarian Dances number among his most popular works – although he didn’t even write them! As he expressly noted on the title page of the first edition, he “only compiled them for piano duet.” What he meant was that he had taken Hungarian dance tunes, fused them into a larger entity and then had the results published, first in an arrangement for piano duet, since the performance of such duets was extremely popular back then. The first two volumes containing the Dances 1-10 were printed in 1869, and two further volumes with the Dances 11–21 were added by Brahms in 1880.

No chamber-music genre was honored with so many works as Mozart’s duos for piano and violin. As well as the 16 sonatas they include two variation cycles which Mozart composed in 1781, thus in his first Viennese year, and were most likely intended for his various pupils and students.The combination of duo/duet and variation was to make the two works especially well known. Did Mozart intend this work to be a duo for two bass instruments, or – as the simple basso-like manner of the second part suggests – a sonata for bassoon and keyboard instrument? We will probably never know the answer because the autograph has gone missing. Our edition allows different instrumentation; it not only contains scores for the duo version but also one so it can be performed as a solo bassoon sonata, following the style of the time with a figured bass realization. And cellists – who are not blessed with many works by Mozart – will appreciate the version of this endearing work for cello and figured bass.

Following Dittersdorf (HN 759) and Hoffmeister (HN 721), Johann Baptist Vanhal and his sole double-bass concerto add a further highlight to the classical bass literature in our catalogue. The virtuoso work was transmitted only in a copy of a part owned by the famous double-bass player Johannes Sperger (1750–1812) and found in his estate, which raises a few questions on account of the many later additions in the solo part (especially concerning the octave transpositions). In our Urtext edition, Tobias Glöckler proposes a solution to this dilemma with a musical text that is outstandingly well-prepared for the performing artist. The piano reduction is printed in two keys (C and D major), which allows for performances in the solo and orchestral tuning or, at will. Moreover an additional part, written in fingering notation, has been specially designed for use with the "Viennese tuning" customary in Vanhal's days. It allows players to use this resonant historical tuning immediately without tedious retraining.

The song “The Trout” from 1817 served as a theme for the variations in his Quintet D. 667 for piano, violin, viola, violoncello and double bass, one of chamber music’s most popular works. The piece’s sunny mood – it sounds much more cheerful than Schubert’s other chamber music – comes across like an echo of the felicitous summer months of 1819. The then twenty-two-year-old Schubert passed these in convivial company at Steyr in Upper Austria, and subsequently set to work composing. The present Urtext edition largely follows the Viennese first edition, which likely reproduces the original version of the now lost autograph. In addition, it takes into account the only manuscript source of this work, a copy by Schubert’s friend Albert Stadler.
