« Robbe-Grillet nous revient, au meilleur de sa forme, avec une manière de conte fantastique, décoré d'un titre hugolien : Djinn. Que ce djinn-là soit une transcription phonétique du prénom féminin américain Jean, porté par une des figures majeures du récit, c'est une première malice. Elle sera suivie de beaucoup d'autres. Tout est jeu dans ce texte qui ne cesse de se dédoubler, en faisant oublier ce qu'il est pour donner l'illusion parfaite d'autre chose. Ce livre réussit à être, en même temps, une merveilleuse histoire à dormir debout, aussi étrange qu'un conte d'Hoffmann, aussi souriante qu'une rêverie de Lewis Carroll, aussi rebondissante qu'une aventure de James Bond, et il nous apporte une excellente synthèse de l'univers romanesque de Robbe-Grillet. Tout y est. Ses décors préférés, ses objets fétiches, ses intrigues favorites d'espionnage et ses reprises maniaques des mêmes scènes sous un éclairage différent. Simon Lecoeur, à la recherche d'un emploi, tombe dans les rets d'une mystérieuse Américaine, Jean, qui le subjugue au point qu'il en devient aussitôt amoureux. Sans rien lui expliquer, elle le charge d'une mission qu'un obstacle, apparemment imprévu, la chute d'un enfant sur le pavé disjoint d'une ruelle obscure, l'empêche d'accomplir. Cet accident, parfaitement programmé au contraire, remet Simon entre les mains de deux enfants, Marie et Jean, qui le contraignent à jouer l'aveugle pour découvrir quelle organisation souterraine il sert : c'est une société de lutte contre le machinisme où l'on n'use, par ironie, que de machines et dont tous les agents, découvre-t-on à la fin du récit, après plusieurs variantes, ne sont que des robots. Je pense que Robbe-Grillet n'est jamais allé aussi loin dans ses angoisses. Mozart was neither a flautist nor a harpist, but his Double Concerto has become the best-known music for both these instruments. This piano concerto by Mozart presented here inaugurate an ambitious project at Henle Publishers: in the coming years many of the Salzburg master’s 23 piano concertos will be published in completely new Urtext editions. And none other than András Schiff is collaborating with us. His piano reductions are aimed at amateurs rather than professionals; his fingerings for Mozart’s solo part have been exquisitely fine-tuned and are inspiring; and where Mozart’s original cadenzas are missing, Schiff’s stylistically perfected ones have been included. In so doing we aspire to set a new precedent. The quality is not only guaranteed by András Schiff, but also by the Mozart scholars to whom Henle Publishers have entrusted their Urtext editions. Each work is edited by a specialist, according to predetermined editorial guidelines. First and foremost Mozart’s handwritten scores have been consulted, being the most important sources. In some cases these had not yet been available when preparing previous editions. Moreover, we know today that in addition to Mozart’s own manuscripts, early copies in parts and prints also contain important information regarding the musical text. A co-production with Breitkopf & Härtel, Mozart’s piano concertos are not only available as attractive and affordable piano reductions, there are also an accompanying Urtext conductor’s score, orchestral parts and a study score. This will ensure that this lavish new edition can be used in many different contexts: whether studying the solo part in a definitive Urtext edition, which reflects the latest research findings; or playing together with a second pianist, providing a piano reduction which not only sounds superb but is also easy to play; or studying and reading the pocket score and finally performing with an orchestra, using newly-prepared material.

Louis Spohr’s concertos have long been a standard feature in the clarinet repertoire, but up to now they have suffered due to a lack of reliable editions. In order to fill this gap, G. Henle Publishers is now following its edition of the Concerto no. 1 in c minor (HN 995) with a critical edition of the Concerto no. 2 in E flat. This is the only one of Spohr’s four clarinet concertos in a major key, and its buoyant atmosphere and joie de vivre remain captivating – especially in the final, “alla polacca” movement. It is hard to believe that this is the first-ever Urtext edition of this concerto! For this edition, Ullrich Scheideler has consulted both the first edition of 1822, published in Leipzig, as well as an important early manuscript. A new, practical, easy-to-play piano arrangement of the orchestral accompaniment has been made by Christoph Sobanski. The orchestral parts may be hired from Breitkopf & Härtel.

With this poetic masterpiece all four of the recently revised “Ballades” (HN 862) are now available as single editions. Following a restrained opening in C major and the first dreamy sounds of the theme, the tension continually increases to the brilliant closing coda before the work finally fades away after four chords. Two autograph scores survive for the fourth ballade, although they are merely fragments. However, the first editions provide important information, particularly since Chopin undertook further corrections after the first printing. Details regarding the genesis of this work and an evaluation of the sources can be found in the explanatory texts in this edition; detailed information can also be downloaded free-of-charge.
