The Bach family of musicians comprises a dynasty that effectively spanned more than 200 years of composition. Johann Sebastian stands at the top of the hierarchy, but what do we know about the family's other members? This release offers us a chance to become acquainted with the work of the German maestro's four sons, revealing the ample talent of a generation that played a crucial role in further advancing music's development over the course of the 18th century. The collection begins with Carl Philipp Emanuel, the most boldly innovative and original, best known for his large collection of harpsichord works (it is therefore refreshing to hear some of his other music on this set, namely his Berlin and Hamburg Symphonies, his Flute Concertos and works for organ). From CD5 the youngest son, Johann Christian, takes over the musical reins, his distinct, Classical-bound style (no doubt influenced by his studies in Italy) much in evidence in his Sinfonia Concertante (here are four of the 18 he wrote) and his Six Sonatas Op.5 -- the first publication to mention both the fortepiano, of which he was a great champion, and harpsichord as performance options. From the youngest son to the eldest: the set moves on to Wilhelm Friedemann, one of the main forerunners of the Empfindsamkeit. And yet contemporary critics took an ill-judged view of his music, seeing him a continuation of his father and not enough of a clean break -- something which this set, featuring his radical harpsichord concertos, is able to refute. The compilation concludes with a CD devoted to the music of Johann Christoph Bach, without doubt the least-known of the Bach sons. Probably the least progressive, too, his music still reflects the stylistic developments of the latter half of the 18th century -- his Symphony in B flat HW1 No.20, for example, written a few months before his death in 1795, assimilates elements of the prevailing Viennese style. At a bargain EUR22, this 10CD box should not be forgone. The release features an array of period-performance ensembles and artists who have made the music of Bach their primary study -- such names include the 'Kammerorchester Carl Philipp Emanuel' under esteemed director Haenchen and the renowned Leipzig group Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum. Within a few years the ¿mighty¿ Soviet Union fell back from a major power to a third world economy, dealing with problems like mass poverty and epidemics. In light of these disastrous outcomes the question of what ¿went right¿ during the transition process seems to be even more appropriate then the question of what ¿went wrong¿. However, while it seems to be obvious that the stabilization and liberalization attempts by the Russian government predominantly failed, privatization, the third core facet of transition1 , ¿has been touted as a one of the major successes of the Russian government¿s economic transformation policy. By the beginning of 1996 77.2% of medium-size and large enterprises had been privatised, accounting for 88.3% of total industrial output.¿2 On the one hand, according to the Russian government¿s Western advisers this privatization is the fastest in human history and ¿seems to be one of the few positive fruit of Russian economic policy since 1991¿3. On the other hand, a common point of view is that its implementation led to an unfair distribution of state assets and only benefited a minority of Russian population. This debate is going to be the main focus of this paper. By discussing the general importance of the private sector to a democracy, the aims of privatization, its subsequent reforms, and its results, I intend to assess the contribution of these reforms to the process of Russian democratization.

Essay from the year 2001 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Russia, grade: 1.3 (A), University of Leeds (POLIS), language: English, abstract: The collapse of communist systems in Europe and the break-up of the Soviet Union have opened a completely new field for political, economic and social study: post-communism. Since then, several efforts have been made to explain the quite different outcomes of what has often been regarded as a common starting point. This cannot surprise: the concept of postcommunism itself implies that the similarities between formerly communist countries overweigh their differences, and a comparative study is hoped to uncover the set of theories that could be applicable to at least most of the region, if not beyond that. But has this approach been successful so far? Or do the current results rather suggest that post-communist studies after merely ten years of existence are lacking behind twenty years already, as it has been put provocatively for the political field? Is there a useful way of comparing the experiences of the formerly communist states, or might such an approach be initially a fraud? This essay tries to answer these questions in the following way: first of all, it gives an overview over post-communist experiences, in order to come, secondly, to a characterisation of the phenomenon. Thirdly, the main theoretical approaches on the subject that are based on comparison are discussed. As a conclusion of these comparative studies, the author argues that post-communism can only be generalised as a phenomenon if seen as an experience of, and challenge to, collective identity.

Like Borodin, Nikolai Rimsky- Korsakov was not set on a career as a composer until he too met with Mili Balakirev, who made him abandon his career as a midshipman in the Imperial Russian Navy. Just as well he did switch direction, as his artistic leanings would eventually led him in to trouble with the Czarist censor. He eventually became a fierce opponent of the Romanov regime. Rimsky became a member of 'The Mighty Handful', or 'The Five', consisting of Borodin, Balakirev (the recruiting sergeant for the group), Cui, and Mussorgsky. In his travel with the navy he absorbed all sorts of musical and cultural influences, especially those of the Orient. He travelled widely, from the UK, America, Canada, Brazil, South Africa, France, Spain, Italy and Egypt. On these trips he often wrote songs, and in total he arranged over 140 traditional songs and composed 79 of his own. This 3CD set presents the bulk of his original songs. They date from 1862 to 1898, and this set fills a gap in the CD catalogue. A complete survey of these works is still a rarity even over a century after the composer's death. These choruses are not (or not entirely) the tub-thumping exercises in blatant jingoistic rabble-rousing that you might expect, but contain many moments of poetry that make them secular rivals to earlier works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov which draw from Russia's great Orthodox tradition of choral music. In Stalin's Russia such an option was closed to Shostakovich, of course, even had he wished to explore it, but instead he used the poetry of Revolutionary leaders and imbued it both with his own, bitter-sweet harmonic vocabulary while never losing sight of the powerful character of Russian choruses for whom he would be writing. One such, Moscow-based, performs the two cycles on this recording, and they naturally have the idiom, and language, under their skins. Other information: - Only available recording as a single issue of these works. - As an "obedient" Soviet artist, Shostakovich set texts of revolutionary poets to music. The result is vintage Shostakovich: under the blatant populist message of the text we hear a melancholy and tender heart. The choral arrangements of Russian Folk Songs derive inspiration from the rich Russian folk culture, and Russian Orthodox Chant (though of course in a hidden way, as it was forbidden by the authorities). - Excellent performances by Russian forces.

Best known for his final opera, The Stone Guest, Alexander Dargomyzhsky was a 19th-century composer who effectively bridged the gap in Russian national opera between Mikhail Glinka and the later generation of The Five and Tchaikovsky. His Rusalka of 1848--55 predates Dvorák's, and supposedly came about as a result of reading the opening line of Pushkin's incomplete dramatic poem of the same name: 'The Mermaid (Rusalka) sits on the branches'. It is a tale of woe, a confluence of the real and fantastic worlds that results in the Prince entering the underwater kingdom in order to be with his beloved, Natasha. Such feelings as narrated in the opera -- the sufferings of a father, maddened with grief; the pain of a rejected woman; the belated repentance of the Prince -- were inherent to the literary works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky and the paintings of Alexander Ivanov of that time, and Dargomyzhsky's heartfelt drama, touching in its simplicity, is most keenly felt in the improvisational style of the work's musical language -- particularly in its pioneering application of the musical recitative, later developed by composers such as Mussorgsky. The work was not an instant success with the public, but this astute, rare 1983 recording underlines the eventual (and deserved) admiration it received. Natalia Mikhailova and Konstantin Pluzhnikov take on the two protagonist roles, ably supported by the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio under their chief conductor of the time, Vladimir Fedoseyev. Conservatives displayed deep dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in Russia in 1907-1914. A critical attitude toward reality was expressed more strongly by extreme right-wing supporters of the All-Russian Dubrovinist Union of Russian People and less strongly by relatively moderate sympathizers of the All-Russian National Union. Over time, dissatisfaction spread from the right to the left, capturing even representatives of the left flank of Russian conservatism by the beginning of World War I. Their negative mood increased especially after the death of Stolypin, who was accepted as a symbol of conservative reform implemented in a «national spirit». Conservatives of various persuasions, advocates and opponents of reform, came together in a negative evaluation of the current uncertain situation which satisfied neither. An explanation for this must be sought above all in the conservatives’ attitude toward Russian modernization. Although Russian conservatism did not, in principle, reject the need to adapt to new realities, it was extremely difficult for conservatives to accept that variant of socioeconomic and political modernization that was taking place in Russia in practice. The social base of Russian conservatism was patently inadequate for the new trends. According to statistical data about the deputies of the Third and Fourth Duma conservative factions attracted individuals from the dominating ethno-confessional group, who, at the same time due to poverty, low level of education, and connection with stagnating agriculture were deprived of real chances for success in a quickly modernizing Russia. Russian conservatism had become the political expression of the interests of social strata that were losing their influence and were those least adapted to the new conditions. There existed another, «ideological-value» dimension to the conflict between conservatives and the status quo. The ideals of Russian conservatives on the eve of World War I were openly archaic and, in essence, presented themselves as variations of the notorious Uvarov’s triad «orthodoxy, autocracy, nationality». Describing their vision of an optimal political organization, they allotted the central place to autocracy, insisted on the necessity to secure the dominant position for the Russian and Orthodox majority. They argued that agriculture was destined to remain eternally the key branch of national economy. The introduction of representative legislative institutions, rise of economic influence of some national minorities, rapid industrial growth, and serious problems in agriculture directly contradicted the conservatives’ notion of the optimal model for the state’s structure. Political and socio-economic modernization was looked at as at mortal danger to the old regime, or even as the beginning of a Götterdämmerung.
