As was tradition in his family, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov trained to be a naval cadet. He continued to compose throughout his years in service and was appointed Professor of Composition and Orchestration at the St Petersburg Conservatory, despite having an extremely limited knowledge of music theory. He is now remembered as one of the most influential Russian Nationalist composers of all time, and was an integral member of 'The Five'. This disc brings together the great composer's cantatas. The Poem about Aleksey, the Man of God Op.20 originally appeared as a chorale in his opera The Maid of Pskov, and Rimsky-Korsakov later created a separate work from it. The Song of Oleg the Wise Op.58 is written in a marital style, as befits the subject matter of the ruler and warrior Oleg; Switezianka Op.44, a cantata for two soloists, is of a similar style. Also on the disc is From Homer Op.60, a tantalising glimpse of what might have been if Rimsky-Korsakov had continued to write his opera based on Homer's Odyssey; the work is made up of the intended orchestral introduction and opening chorus of the opera. It depicts the storm that washes Odysseus onto the shores of Phaecia, and shows the composer's talent for writing for female voices, including a trio (soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto) and a female chorus. The cantatas feature the Chorus of the Moscow Academy of Choral Art and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, as well as a host of accomplished soloists. This 14-CD set showcases works from Handel's short but astonishingly productive time in Italy in his twenties, just before he settled in London. His travels around the country provided him with the opportunity to meet a number of influential contemporaries, and the results of this compositional flourishing are wide-ranging, from opera via instrumental music to secular cantatas. This release focuses particularly on the latter, affording the listener a fascinating glimpse into the first appearance of many melodic ideas which would later resurface in Handel's mature dramatic works. Indeed, listeners might well feel as though they are listening to scenes from operas - cantatas were a means, at the time, of circumventing the ban on opera in Rome. The familiar theme of the joys and sorrows of love pervades much of the music, but the pieces are richly varied, particularly in their scoring: we hear flutes, recorders, oboes, bassoons, trumpets and the full contingent of strings, including viola da gamba, in numerous different combinations. Often, the orchestral forces for a particular piece are modest, but the emotional depth that Handel draws out is always striking. A high-calibre, international roster of soloists and ensembles performs the works, with many of the compositions for soprano sung by Stefanie True, whose "vocal agility, accurate intonation and stylish ornamentation are spot-on in this repertoire" (Music Web International). Meanwhile, early music specialists Contrasto Armonico bring "soft and warm sonorities" to the set (Gramophone). This set presents an extensive collection of works which George Frideric Handel wrote during his short but astoundingly fruitful stay in Italy. Here he met the great composers of the day, imbuing the rich Italian style, full of drama, cantabile and instrumental brilliance. The set's focus is on the secular Cantatas, all of them mini-operas in scale and substance, dealing with human emotions of love, jealousy, hope and despair. The influence of Handel's stay in Italy can be found in many of his great operas and oratorios he later wrote in London. Apart from the Cantatas the set includes a selection of Italian Duets, and the Serenata Aci, Galatea & Polifemo. Excellent performances in Historically Informed Performance Practice, by Contrasto Armonico, Musica Perduta and specialist vocal soloists. Recorded between 1988 and 2014. Alexander Scriabin, unhinged musical poet, theosophist who saw his calling as no less than forging a unity of Man and Godthrough music, can best be appreciated not perhaps through the lush orchestral music but his still more innovative piano music. The ten Sonatas span his career, from the Silver age outpourings of the four-movement First Sonata to the ever more elliptical, sudden shifts in mood and material which flit through the unique forms of the last four in the cycle, not least the Seventh ('White Mass') and Ninth ('Black Mass'). If it is true that the end of Romanticism coincided with the invention of electric light, then we can date this to 1880 -- the year in which Thomas Alva Edison patented the light bulb. At around this time, a brilliant student at the Paris Conservatoire, Claude Debussy, decided to embark upon a composing career that would soon 'illuminate' the history of music. Debussy's output is roughly divided into three periods, each of which is represented by one of the three discs in this set. Focusing solely on his works for piano duo, the collection effectively represents a vantage point from which to analyse his stylistic development, since it touches on both Debussy's piano and orchestral writing simultaneously: as well as original keyboard works (Lindaraja is one example, the composer's first work inspired by Spain), there are piano pieces arranged for orchestra, vice-versa compositions (Prélude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, for instance) and music that was clearly intended for the orchestra or for specific ensembles (one example is Le triomphe de Bacchus, for which the orchestration was never completed). Performing these works are two of Italy's most celebrated pianists, Massimiliano Damerini and Marco Rapetti. Their accomplished readings highlight the unique relationship that exists between piano and orchestra -- the former can be seen as a monochromatic version of the latter, with the latter essentially describing the former in polychromatic terms -- and, at the same time, draw the listener's attention towards an important area of 19th-century music-making: namely piano transcriptions' vital role in making operatic and symphonic repertoire available to all. eroen Van Veen has released a series of acclaimed recordings on Brilliant Classics of music by the masters of Minimalism, that 1960s-derived aesthetic in which it is not so much the case that more can be said with less as that less seems to be necessary in an increasingly noisy and chaotic world. The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt has never counted himself as among the minimalist number, nor indeed was he schooled in their new traditions, but emerged in the 1960s as an angry and dissonant voice whose musically expressed anger against Communist oppression of his native country could barely be contained within the tumultuous textures of works such as the Third Symphony, but a combination of personal circumstances and aesthetic decisions led him to pare back his style to the world of eerie calm and yet underlying melancholy that has made works such as the Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten such an enduring favourite even among audiences who would not otherwise count themselves as aficionados of the European contemporary music scene. But then Pärt has never fitted into any one stylistic box, and alongside the quiet rapture of Für Alina we may find the student-era tinkling of the intriguing early Dance Pieces, as well as arrangements of classics such as Fratres and Spiegel im Spiegel - here interpreted by Dutch cellist Douw Fonda - that seem to preserve their special mood no matter what the instrumental forces; a quality they share with works of Pärt's compositional idol, J.S. Like Borodin, Nikolai Rimsky- Korsakov was not set on a career as a composer until he too met with Mili Balakirev, who made him abandon his career as a midshipman in the Imperial Russian Navy. Just as well he did switch direction, as his artistic leanings would eventually led him in to trouble with the Czarist censor. He eventually became a fierce opponent of the Romanov regime. Rimsky became a member of 'The Mighty Handful', or 'The Five', consisting of Borodin, Balakirev (the recruiting sergeant for the group), Cui, and Mussorgsky. In his travel with the navy he absorbed all sorts of musical and cultural influences, especially those of the Orient. He travelled widely, from the UK, America, Canada, Brazil, South Africa, France, Spain, Italy and Egypt. On these trips he often wrote songs, and in total he arranged over 140 traditional songs and composed 79 of his own. This 3CD set presents the bulk of his original songs. They date from 1862 to 1898, and this set fills a gap in the CD catalogue. A complete survey of these works is still a rarity even over a century after the composer's death. Perhaps best known for writing the waltz on which Beethoven based his Diabelli Variations, Anton Diabelli was also an established composer and musician in his own right. Resident in Vienna in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Diabelli was a good friend of Franz Schubert. Thanks to the emergence of an educated middle class, there was less and less dependence on religious or royal patronage. Diabelli's sonatas for guitar, widely considered to be masterpieces of the guitar repertoire, reflect Viennese musical taste at this time. They were his only foray into sonata form, and document the evolution of the composer's style. The first sonata includes so-called 'Italianisms' while the second has a distinctly Schubertian flavour, no doubt due to his close friendship with the composer. The third sonata shows a more revolutionary take on the principles of sonata form where many of the ideas are challenged. The second part of the first movement contains such drama and skill in the development of the themes that it is considered one of the finest passages in the guitar sonata repertoire. Acclaimed Italian guitarist Claudio Giuliani trained at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. He has published transcriptions of 82 sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, and has previously recorded 30 sonatas by Domenico Cimarosa for Brilliant Classics in 2011.
