Nachdem im Jahr 1000 n. Chr. der christliche Norwegerkönig Olaf in einer grossen Schlacht von seinen heidnischen Feinden besiegt wird teilen die Sieger das norwegische Königreich unter sich auf. Der grösste Teil des Volkes fällt vom Glauben an den Herrn Christus ab und opfert fortan wieder Odin, Freya und Thor. Die christlichen Jarle, die an dem neuen Glauben festhalten, fliehen aus ihrer Heimat. So auch Jarl Erik Sigurdsson. Er verlässt mit seiner Familie Norwegen und lebt als einfacher Bauer auf Island. Doch das Leben auf der Eisinsel wird für ihn zur Qual, und es zieht ihn zurück in die alte Heimat. So wird Erik wieder Herr im Sigurdfjord. Doch einige schwere Schicksalsschläge lassen den christlichen Glauben in ihm verblassen und treiben den jungen Jarl als Seekrieger und Wikinger auf das Meer hinaus.
