In the fairy tale “The Nutcracker and the King of the Mice” written by the German Romantic E. T. A. Hoffmann and published in 1814, on which Tchaikovsky’s ballet is based, Christmas provides the realistic setting for a fantastic plot. Fiction and reality are woven together by means of strange and wondrous occurrences to produce a fascinating and unfathomable labyrinth. Both Hoffmann and Tchaikovsky, who began to compose the ballet in his fiftieth year, could identify with the literary figure of the watchmaker Drosselmeier, who gives order to his life through his work. In 1999, exactly 107 years – to the day – after the first performance in St. Petersburg, Patrice Bart’s choreography of Tchaikovsky’s worldwide success The Nutcracker was premiered at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. Bart placed a prologue before the ballet in which Marie is abducted as a child and in which everything is placed in a modern context.

Among these symphonic suites, “The Nutcracker” alone was written by the composer and performed under his direction before the creation of the completed ballet. It was on the occasion of a gala evening, so Tchaikovsky chose the „featured dances”; namely dances reserved for “entertainments”. Yet, even if he had considered using them, the orchestral suites of “The Sleeping Beauty” and “Swan Lake” were included without his approval after his death. Destined to be performed in concerts, they were considered a sort of best off of each of the ballets; bringing together without an event-driven chronology, the “featured dances” and a few numbers centred on the characters and the action. In looking for a title, I remembered that as a child I defined my wonderments as “Magifique”. Magnifique without a “n” because hatred divides (the word for hatred in French sounds like the letter “n”); and that this invented word, a sort of short-circuited language, fits well with the intentions of this creation: to create magic or else recycle life’s raw material through expressive and poetic forms. Between the years 1880–1882 Debussy occasionally accompanied Nadescha von Meck, Tchaikovsky’s patroness, on journeys, also working as her house pianist. At the beginning of 1881 she thanked Debussy for sending her his “charming symphony”; which, however, only comprised one allegro movement. In 1912 Debussy mentioned a proposed symphony, yet he never completed it. As a critic of traditional forms and as a musical innovator who was not particularly interested in producing symphonies, this is hardly any wonder. For a long time the autograph of the Allegro lay untouched in Russian archives so that the work was only published for the first time posthumously in 1933, in Russia.

Following the publication of the Valse-Scherzo, we continue our edition of Tchaikovsky’s complete works for violin and piano with the enchanting Sérénade mélancolique, op. 26. This was Tchaikovsky’s first concertante work for violin, the beginning of a path that was to lead to his Violin Concerto three years later. He composed the Sérénade mélancolique in 1875 for violinist Leopold Auer, originally for violin and orchestra, but later also in a version for violin and piano. Since the autograph sources are lost, this Henle edition is based on the Russian first editions, which even in Tchaikovsky’s lifetime were issued in a number of revised versions. Our editor, Russian Tchaikovsky scholar Alexander Komarov, brings exemplary clarity to the confused state of the sources, while Ingolf Turban unlocks the notation of the violin part with his accomplished fingerings and bowings.

Best known for his final opera, The Stone Guest, Alexander Dargomyzhsky was a 19th-century composer who effectively bridged the gap in Russian national opera between Mikhail Glinka and the later generation of The Five and Tchaikovsky. His Rusalka of 1848--55 predates Dvorák's, and supposedly came about as a result of reading the opening line of Pushkin's incomplete dramatic poem of the same name: 'The Mermaid (Rusalka) sits on the branches'. It is a tale of woe, a confluence of the real and fantastic worlds that results in the Prince entering the underwater kingdom in order to be with his beloved, Natasha. Such feelings as narrated in the opera -- the sufferings of a father, maddened with grief; the pain of a rejected woman; the belated repentance of the Prince -- were inherent to the literary works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky and the paintings of Alexander Ivanov of that time, and Dargomyzhsky's heartfelt drama, touching in its simplicity, is most keenly felt in the improvisational style of the work's musical language -- particularly in its pioneering application of the musical recitative, later developed by composers such as Mussorgsky. The work was not an instant success with the public, but this astute, rare 1983 recording underlines the eventual (and deserved) admiration it received. Natalia Mikhailova and Konstantin Pluzhnikov take on the two protagonist roles, ably supported by the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio under their chief conductor of the time, Vladimir Fedoseyev. These choruses are not (or not entirely) the tub-thumping exercises in blatant jingoistic rabble-rousing that you might expect, but contain many moments of poetry that make them secular rivals to earlier works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov which draw from Russia's great Orthodox tradition of choral music. In Stalin's Russia such an option was closed to Shostakovich, of course, even had he wished to explore it, but instead he used the poetry of Revolutionary leaders and imbued it both with his own, bitter-sweet harmonic vocabulary while never losing sight of the powerful character of Russian choruses for whom he would be writing. One such, Moscow-based, performs the two cycles on this recording, and they naturally have the idiom, and language, under their skins. Other information: - Only available recording as a single issue of these works. - As an "obedient" Soviet artist, Shostakovich set texts of revolutionary poets to music. The result is vintage Shostakovich: under the blatant populist message of the text we hear a melancholy and tender heart. The choral arrangements of Russian Folk Songs derive inspiration from the rich Russian folk culture, and Russian Orthodox Chant (though of course in a hidden way, as it was forbidden by the authorities). - Excellent performances by Russian forces.

One of the most widely performed works in the violinist's oeuvre, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto has been the subject of many a release over the years. Interpreting these works is internationally renowned Ilya Grubert, winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition back in 1978 and described as 'a musician of exceptional talent, a violinist in the tradition of the great Russian virtuosos, possessed of a clear unwavering tone and an extraordinary technique.' (New York Times). He is supported by an all-Russian cast: the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Vassily Sinaisky -- now Conductor in Residence at the Bolshoi Theatre. As with Schumann’s “Concert Piece for four Horns” op. 86 (HN 1138) Saint-Saëns’ “Morceau de Concert” was also composed with the idea of exploiting the technical possibilities of the new valve-horn mechanism. In this case, the French horn player Henri Chaussier provided the impulse. He had developed a novel “Cor omnitonique” and wanted to demonstrate the merits of his instrument with Saint-Saëns’ composition. Chaussier’s invention did not gain acceptance amongst horn players – although the “Morceau de Concert” did! The popular work with one movement is quite demanding technically; however, Saint-Saëns himself already suggested some abridgements and ossias to simplify the piece, meaning that also advanced pupils can venture to play it.

Both of these works for two oboes and cor anglais, which Beethoven composed in the 1790s, belong to the lighter genre of serenades and divertimentos. He might have written them in response to a commission or have been inspired by the prevailing popularity of this delicate combination of instruments. Likewise, with the Variations WoO 28 on the famous theme “La ci darem la mano” by Mozart, he made a contribution of his own to the arrangements of operatic melodies for wind ensembles that were so popular at the time.
