Es wird in Fachkreisen die Frage diskutiert, ob das menschliche Leben und Wirtschaften auf einen Punkt zusteuert, an dem es Gefahr läuft, sich seiner eigenen natürlichen Grundlagen zu berauben. Das durch diese Debatte gewachsene öffentliche Bewusstsein einer gemeinsamen globalen Verantwortung verschafft dem Konzept ¿Sustainable Development¿ eine zentrale Rolle als Entwicklungsleitbild für die Weltgemeinschaft. Mit dem Konzept der Nachhaltigen Entwicklung werden ökologische, ökonomische und soziale Aspekte gleichermassen verknüpft. Die fachübergreifende Zusammenführung dieser Komponenten führt zu gegenseitigen Wechselwirkungen und somit zu positiven oder negativen Auswirkungen. Es bedarf daher Regelungen auf nationaler und globaler Ebene, um die Ziele umsetzten zu können und Konflikte zu vermeiden. In dieser Arbeit soll die Historische Entwicklung des Sustainable Development, der Inhalt und die Rechtlichen Auswirkungen auf nationaler Ebene dargestellt werden.

Further, the goal of the second part is to work out and describe the concepts of dematerialisation as well as functional orientation from a sustainable perspective. Therefore, the term ¿dematerialisation¿ is definded and a brief general overview about the current situation is given. Secondly, this approach as well as the approach of functional orientation will be presented and discussed out of a sustainable perspective. Finally, the aim of the last elaboration is to work out the paradoxes between the theoretical approach of marketing, namely the foundations of marketing, and the concepts and values of a sustainable society. It will be conducted, what problems might appear when these two approaches are brought together. Therefore, first of all the theoretical foundations of marketing are named and described. Secondly, the concepts and values of a sustainable society are shown and discussed. After this, the problems which are occuring, when these two approaches are brought together, are presented.

Es geht darum, einen Pfad der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung zu finden, der die Wohlfahrt nachfolgender Generationen nicht beeinträchtigt. Eine zentrale Forschungsaufgabe der Wirtschaftswissenschaft liegt darin, einen Beitrag dazu zu leisten, dass aus der Idee der nachhaltigen Entwicklung ein operables wissenschaftliches und politisches Konzept wird. Wesentliche Voraussetzung für eine im Zeitablauf nicht abnehmende Wohlfahrt ist es, dass die (jeweilige) Gegenwartsgeneration den zukünftigen Generationen einen unangetasteten Kapitalbestand als Quelle der Wohlfahrt hinterlässt. Dabei ist nicht der physische Kapitalbestand, sondern ein aus menschengemachtem und natürlichem Vermögen zusammengesetzter wertmässig konstanter Kapitalbestand gemeint. Auf dem Wege zur Operationalisierung des Nachhaltigkeitsbegriffs kommt der Entwicklung von Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren, mit denen die Konstanz des Kapitalbestandes geprüft werden kann, eine hervorragende Bedeutung zu. Hierfür wirtschaftstheoretische Grundlagen zu erarbeiten und für ausgewählte Problembereiche erste Indikatoransätze vorzulegen, ist das zentrale Anliegen dieser Studie.
