The issues and problems that are associated with implementing and gaining support for BPM within organisations are well known. BPM maturity, however, is something that organisations aspire to ¿ but know little about. Research to date indicates that many organisations do not progress past very rudimentary levels of BPM maturity. This is likely due to BPM being seen as a complex and complicated issue. This research looks at what successful organisations see as being key to BPM and what organisations that are unsuccessful in BPM implementation consider being the issues that contributed to their failure. BPM is defined as a holistic management practice that includes the alignment of processes with the corporate strategy and especially with strategic and operational goals. Whilst the use of both methodologies and information technology, as supporting and enabling functions, is important for BPM, organisational and cultural change is identified as one of the critical success factors for BPM implementations. This research focuses on defining BPM maturity in a meaningful and measurable way. It addresses the complexity of BPM maturity be firstly defining what BPM maturity means and then developing a model that can be used to measure current levels of maturity. In addition, BPM-related benefits are identified, such as increased effectiveness, efficiency, or quality. Increased BPM maturity is characterised as being correlated with an increased probability of achieving these benefits. An increased maturity can lead to a decreased gap between objectives and a current situation. Objectives are also more likely to be met due to less varying results and, therefore, greater ability to predict results. The organisation-wide deeper understanding of how the business is conducted results in work being more consistent and repeatable and as a result more effectively and efficiently. Other benefits of the model are the ability of the organisation to determine strengths and weaknesses in current applications. In doing this, the organisations see benefits in being able to expand knowledge sharing within the organisation by learning from the successes within its own self.

Electricity systems worldwide are currently in a phase of change. The traditional centralized supply systems with a low number of large generators feeding millions of loads are more and more supplemented with distributed energy resources. These can be small generators, but also energy storages and especially active consumers. The future smart grid will much more rely on information and communication technology than today. The idea of demand side management, i.e. remote management of electrical loads in power grids is not new, but it was never of such importance as today that consumers actively contribute to grid operation. This work, targeting engineers and scientists in this area, proposes a concrete technical realisation of how electrical loads can take part in the existing balancing mechanisms of the grid using low bandwidth communication infrastructure. The proposed algorithm is based on a generalised storage model for short term energy storage on the demand side. An implementation is presented and a large scale application is compared to competing approaches in simulations.

The main research question consists of the idea if open source customer relationship management systems are able to fulfill the requirements of a CRM software. In order to be able to answer this question, the following analysis made use of the literature available on the topics CRM, special requirements of small and medium-sized enterprises, and the topic of open source software. By revealing what a CRM have to fulfill in order to be classified as customer relationship management system according to the findings in the literature, various requirements are identified. In the next step, the three most popular open source CRM software systems Sugar CRM, vTiger, and OpenCRX are scrutinized under the criteria if they are able to fulfill the requirements defined in the previous steps. The conclusion discusses the previous findings and outlines the chances and limits of open source customer relationship management solutions for small and medium-sized enterprises. In addition to this, the requirements of a successful implementation of a CRM system are revealed and the concept of seeing CRM as a corporate strategy is concretized. The aim of this book is to outline the holistic approach of CRM and to examine the research question if open source CRM solutions are able to fulfill the requirements previously defined according to the underlying literature.

Even a brief look into the area of New Technology-Based Firms (NTBFs) shows that extensive literature exists on a wide range of topics, both on a more general scale, but also on rather specialised sub-areas of NTBFs. While it is certainly desirable to explore any one of these specialised areas in more depth, the focus of this paper is to give a brief but comprehensive overview of the area of NTBFs about research in the last 20 to 25 years. The underlying notion of the paper is to question if large firms are better at innovation than small firms. An answer to this question in the light of the findings of this paper will be attempted in the conclusion in chapter seven. Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to define and highlight briefly the main characteristics of NTBFs, and to point out the level of cooperation between small and large firms in the technology sector. It will then evaluate these in the light of the Mobile Phone sector. The influence of governments on small innovative companies will also be considered. In knowledgebased economies, IP protection and management have become the highly important element for business success. Intellectual Property is everywhere: it is embedded in daily-needs products, high-tech equipment, technology, as well organizational routines. Having become crucial in modern world, Intellectual Property and knowledge capital, more than physical capital, drive economies of different countries. About 70% of business assets today are intangibles.1 Not less important for economy are small and middle-sized enterprises (SMEs). This strategic sector covers the whole spectrum of economic fields and is a very important contributor to sustainable economic development. Representing over 90% of all business establishments and about half or more of GDP and export shares SME sector is often associated with a ¿backbone¿ of most national economies.2 Intellectual Property is increasingly regarded as a valuable resource for individuals, firms and nations, and as a source of competitive advantage.3 Nowadays, companies are exploiting IP rights not only for protection and security of return purposes; they increasingly use them due to strategic reasons. Numerous studies and literatures4 recognized SMEs as an important contributor to innovation. However, there is still a little understanding of how SMEs manage their IP. Existing studies have focused mainly on large firms and, particularly, on patenting activity, and there are still few attempts to bridge all three together: SMEs, Intellectual Property and IP management. The aim of this paper is an analysis of SME¿s performance in innovation and the state of SMEs in IP system. For this reason two main questions were formulated: ¿How do SMEs manage their IP?¿ and ¿Are SMEs really disadvantaged by their size in the use of IP rights?¿ In order to answer the first question, the following aspects were examined: a way of usage different protection methods by SMEs, the reasons why they apply for IP protection and what obstacles SMEs may face in their exploitation of IP system.
