One year before he died Franz Schubert composed the great song cycle “Winterreise” (Winter Journey) after the poems by Wilhelm Müller. Being already very sick he created a masterpiece that – together with “Die schöne Müllerin” – holds the foremost place in the history of this genre. Francisco Araiza’s interpretation of Schubert’s very moving songs was recorded in 1993 at a Romanesque chapel and captures the beauty and tragedy of this work in an absolutely outstanding way. Accompanied by the pianist Jean Lemaire he also gives a superb performance of Robert Schumann’s song-cycle “Dichterliebe”; which has been recorded under studio conditions at the Renaissance Grafenschloss in southern Germany. The internationally-acclaimed Mexican tenor and lied singer Araiza has sung as soloist in leading concert halls and in leading tenor operatic roles in the major opera houses of Europe and North America.

The song “The Trout” from 1817 served as a theme for the variations in his Quintet D. 667 for piano, violin, viola, violoncello and double bass, one of chamber music’s most popular works. The piece’s sunny mood – it sounds much more cheerful than Schubert’s other chamber music – comes across like an echo of the felicitous summer months of 1819. The then twenty-two-year-old Schubert passed these in convivial company at Steyr in Upper Austria, and subsequently set to work composing. The present Urtext edition largely follows the Viennese first edition, which likely reproduces the original version of the now lost autograph. In addition, it takes into account the only manuscript source of this work, a copy by Schubert’s friend Albert Stadler. Musicians everywhere will appreciate the optimally-placed page turns in the individual parts!

Just as in his “Trout” Quintet (D 667), “Wanderer” Fantasy (D 760), and string quartet “Death and the Maiden” (D 810), in the flute variations on “Trockne Blumen” (D 802) Franz Schubert employs one of his songs as the thematic basis of an instrumental composition. “Trockne Blumen” (Dried Flowers) is the eighteenth song from the cycle “Die schöne Müllerin” (D 795), composed in autumn 1823. In January 1824, before publication of all of the Müller songs that summer, the Theme and Variations in E minor for flute and piano were written, prefaced by a weighty introductory section. The work remains Schubert’s single and singular virtuoso composition for flautists: tremendously difficult for the flute to play, and, incidentally, sometimes very tricky for the piano to “accompany.” Schubert’s much-reworked autograph manuscript is the sole authoritative source for our Urtext, as it demonstrably served as the engraver’s copy for the posthumously published first edition. One of the variations he crossed out entirely – the Henle Urtext edition reproduces it, more for informational purposes than for performance, in the appendix.

It was not his large piano sonatas, but rather his short, characteristic pieces that established Franz Schubert’s fame. Like his art songs, they too are full of spontaneous, lyrical inspiration. The two greatly charming Scherzi, D. 593, presumably composed already in 1817, stand at the threshold of Schubert’s phase of dance compositions for the piano. The first, dance-like, graceful Scherzo is in B-flat major. The second, more emotional Scherzo in D-flat major has a Ländler-like A-flat major trio as its middle section. The preface and critical report provide information on the source situation of this accurate Urtext edition.

In 1991, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau finally agreed to perform Schubert’s “Die Schöne Müllerin” at the Feldkirch Schubertiade - he had not sung the song-cycle in public for twenty years. The great baritone belonged to the innermost circle of artists who give this unique, Austrian festival of chamber music its distinctive character. He had performed Schubert there on many occasions, but never “Die Schöne Müllerin”. The pianist András Schiff was another long-standing member of the inner circle, but this was the artists’ first collaboration in Feldkirch – and so Austrian Television (ORF) recorded the concert. The documentary importance of this film was enhanced by Fischer-Dieskau’s retirement from public performance two years later. During another Schubertiade a few years earlier, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was interviewed by music journalist Franz Zoglauer. The resulting documentary of singer, painter and private person augments the concert presented on this DVD. The singer speaks of his affinity to Schubert and the composer’s influence on the whole Lieder repertoire. With regard to his many recordings, Fischer-Dieskau declares that he has always considered these as “snapshots” of a particular situation and never as definitive statements on the repertory. He states that an interpretation should always be able to react to the surrounding situation, the accompanist and the audience and that, to keep a composition alive and meaningful, a performer must always be ready to approach a work afresh. Returning to “Die Schöne Müllerin” for this Schubertiade, and working with András Schiff, the singer’s approach was fresh indeed! Fischer-Dieskau had often sung the song cycle early in his career, and he had made various studio recordings of the work, the last of these formed part of a set of all of Schubert’s songs recorded with Gerald Moore in 1971. Then he let the work rest for twenty years. Looking back on the Schubertiade performance, Fischer-Dieskau says that, for the first time really, he tried, to sing these songs as he had always thought of them: led more by narrative than by emotion and responding to the wealth of colour and expression in the piano part (which calls for a pianist as sensitive as András Schiff) with curiosity and openness rather than concentrating on the vocal line. It was a unique occasion, not only for the listeners in the hall but also for the two artists, who experienced their collaboration on the podium as something quite exceptional. The viewer can see this in the artists’ animated give and take, their spontaneous mutual reactions, the creative excitement and a rare artistic vivacity. Both remember the evening as a special event, and without any hesitation consented to the recording being issued on DVD to make it available to a wider public.
