Entgegen dem gängigen Entwicklungsverlauf, d.h. dass aus einem CAD- Datenmodell ein Produkt entsteht, wird beim Reverse Engineering aus einem bestehenden Produkt ein CAD-Datensatz gewonnen. Der Weg verläuft also vom realen, Produkt zur digitalen Konstruktion. Dazu werden reale Objekte von dreidimensionalen Messinstrumenten vermessen, und man erhält ungeordnete Punktmengen. Sollen die gescannten Daten konstruktiv weiterverarbeitet werden, müssen diese in Flächen- oder Volumenmodelle überführt werden. Die so gewonnen CAD-Daten werden zur weiteren Bearbeitung der klassischen CAE-Prozesse benötigt, wie z.B. Finite-Elemente-Analyse (FE-Analyse). Im bisherigen klassischen Konstruktionsablauf gibt es noch kaum Rückkopplungen zwischen FE-Daten und CAD-Daten. Meist werden nach der Konstruktion eines Bauteils mittels der FE-Analyse Belastbarkeitsanforderungen und funktionelle Eigenschaften geprüft. Sind die Anforderungen nicht erfüllt, so muss erneut das Modell konstruktiv geändert und erneut analysiert werden. Genau hier soll der Arbeitsaufwand eingespart werden. Denn es wäre hilfreich, wenn nun aus den veränderten FE-Daten direkt ein CAD-Modell rückgerechnet werden könnte.
