The Bach family of musicians comprises a dynasty that effectively spanned more than 200 years of composition. Johann Sebastian stands at the top of the hierarchy, but what do we know about the family's other members? This release offers us a chance to become acquainted with the work of the German maestro's four sons, revealing the ample talent of a generation that played a crucial role in further advancing music's development over the course of the 18th century. The collection begins with Carl Philipp Emanuel, the most boldly innovative and original, best known for his large collection of harpsichord works (it is therefore refreshing to hear some of his other music on this set, namely his Berlin and Hamburg Symphonies, his Flute Concertos and works for organ). From CD5 the youngest son, Johann Christian, takes over the musical reins, his distinct, Classical-bound style (no doubt influenced by his studies in Italy) much in evidence in his Sinfonia Concertante (here are four of the 18 he wrote) and his Six Sonatas Op.5 -- the first publication to mention both the fortepiano, of which he was a great champion, and harpsichord as performance options. From the youngest son to the eldest: the set moves on to Wilhelm Friedemann, one of the main forerunners of the Empfindsamkeit. And yet contemporary critics took an ill-judged view of his music, seeing him a continuation of his father and not enough of a clean break -- something which this set, featuring his radical harpsichord concertos, is able to refute. The compilation concludes with a CD devoted to the music of Johann Christoph Bach, without doubt the least-known of the Bach sons. Probably the least progressive, too, his music still reflects the stylistic developments of the latter half of the 18th century -- his Symphony in B flat HW1 No.20, for example, written a few months before his death in 1795, assimilates elements of the prevailing Viennese style. At a bargain EUR22, this 10CD box should not be forgone. The release features an array of period-performance ensembles and artists who have made the music of Bach their primary study -- such names include the 'Kammerorchester Carl Philipp Emanuel' under esteemed director Haenchen and the renowned Leipzig group Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum. What occasioned Beethoven to write a composition for such an unusual and yet sonorous group of instruments? Was it perhaps commissioned by a nobleman who played music with such a group and needed music? Whatever the reason behind it, opus 25 is one of Beethoven’s few chamber music works that did not have a bass instrument. Despite the unusual combination of instruments, Beethoven had no difficulty in finding a publisher for his serenade; shortly afterwards he even turned to the work again and revised an arrangement for flute and piano (op. 41), which had been made by a third party. Our revised edition follows the musical text in volume VI/1 of our new Beethoven Complete Edition.

“Wind music of a very special nature on a large-scale, a composition by Hr. Mozart” – this was the way the “Wiener Blättchen” announced the concert in the National Court Theatre, in which the clarinettist Anton Stadler was to hold his academy. There were twelve wind instruments supported by a doublebass, which was a very unusual combination of instruments, and the contemporary critics raved about it, “Oh; what an effect it made – glorious and grand, excellent and exquisite!”. The title “Gran Partita”; which was added to the autograph in an unknown hand, also bears witness to admiration and respect. Our edition is based on the autograph which has changed hands many times and is today held in Washington.

This work, composed in 1878/79, alternates between chamber music intimacy and symphonic opulence, and marks the beginning of a series of significant late works by César Franck. Its composition was partly prompted by the successful performance of Franck’s youthful piano trios at the “Société nationale de musique” (founded in 1871), and probably also by a composition competition for works using this instrumental combination whose deadline Franck then went on to miss. The Quintet was received coolly at its first performance in January 1880, and it was performed just a few more times during the composer’s lifetime. It was only in the 20th century that audiences and critics came to recognise this work as a major milestone in the history of French chamber music, and it now adorns the Henle catalogue in a new Urtext edition.

Mozart often began work on a composition only to put it aside, unfinished. Some of these fragments contain wonderful music, as is proved by these three piano trio fragments. Mozart composed them at different times as individual movements, though the posthumous first edition brought them together as a supposedly new and unknown piano trio by the composer, and on this basis they were given the number “442” in Köchel’s catalogue. The first edition used completions by Mozart’s friend Abbé Maximilian Stadler that were stylistically correct but possessed little originality. The Spanish composer Enrique Granados left a varied and wide-ranging oeuvre, but it is above all his piano music that is still very much alive today. Our Urtext edition of the dazzlingly virtuoso Goyescas – no doubt his best-known piano composition – now brings a prestigious new work to our catalogue. The suite was written between 1909 and 1911. Its unusual title goes back to the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, whose paintings inspired Granados. The Goyescas conjure up Spanish life in Goya’s time at the end of the 18th century – gallant and sensual, but also melancholic and dark. The subtitle “Los majos enamorados” (the young lovers) provides a thematic link among the six scenes which depict the joys and sufferings of budding love.

Can one imagine a better teacher of chamber music composition than Joseph Haydn? The Austrian Joseph Pleyel assimilated his teacher’s skill so well that his galant and substantial Piano Trios in C major and F major were initially attributed to the great master (and assigned the catalogue numbers Hob. XV:3 and Hob. XV:4). Pleyel’s compositions enjoyed great popularity and found wide dissemination in his day. Kapellmeister Kreisler, the ingenious and eccentric conductor created by E. T. A. Hoffmann, served as the inspiration for this composition of 1838. Schumann set out to recreate this fictitious character in music. Franck wrote almost all of his important works in his later years. This almost 20-minute-long cycle from 1884 is his best-known piano composition and is often played on concert platforms to this day. Although Franck himself was a very proficient pianist, his musical roots are in organ music, which also supplied the inspiration for his piano output.

For their perfection of composition and link with important literary works, the two operas Wozzeck and Lulu – the latter left unfinished at the composer’s death – must rank among the most outstanding music theatre pieces of the 20th century. In April 1914 Alban Berg attended the first Vienna performance of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, a drama fragment whose premiere was staged only the year before, in Munich. Berg began composing the opera almost immediately afterwards, finishing it in October 1921 and completing the instrumental score by April 1922. Since then the opera has been frequently performed. Particularly in Vienna, as is clear from this DVD recording, Wozzeck productions have continually set new standards of excellence. The live footage of Adolf Dresen’s 1987 production of Wozzeck was recorded by Brian Large at the Vienna State Opera. The two leading roles were played by Franz Grundhuber as Wozzeck and Hildgard Behrens as Marie. Claudio Abbado conducted the Vienna State Opera choir and orchestra.

As was tradition in his family, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov trained to be a naval cadet. He continued to compose throughout his years in service and was appointed Professor of Composition and Orchestration at the St Petersburg Conservatory, despite having an extremely limited knowledge of music theory. He is now remembered as one of the most influential Russian Nationalist composers of all time, and was an integral member of 'The Five'. This disc brings together the great composer's cantatas. The Poem about Aleksey, the Man of God Op.20 originally appeared as a chorale in his opera The Maid of Pskov, and Rimsky-Korsakov later created a separate work from it. The Song of Oleg the Wise Op.58 is written in a marital style, as befits the subject matter of the ruler and warrior Oleg; Switezianka Op.44, a cantata for two soloists, is of a similar style. Also on the disc is From Homer Op.60, a tantalising glimpse of what might have been if Rimsky-Korsakov had continued to write his opera based on Homer's Odyssey; the work is made up of the intended orchestral introduction and opening chorus of the opera. It depicts the storm that washes Odysseus onto the shores of Phaecia, and shows the composer's talent for writing for female voices, including a trio (soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto) and a female chorus. The cantatas feature the Chorus of the Moscow Academy of Choral Art and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, as well as a host of accomplished soloists. Other information: - Recorded in 2001, the only CD available with these works. - Magnificent choral works, from an unexpected source: Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, composer of grand scale, lushly orchestrated symphonic works and colourful legend-based operas. - The texts are based mainly on Russian topics: fairy-tales, Russian heroes, but also a lengthy episode from Homer's Odysseus. - Contains extensive liner notes on the composer and works.
