First, the linguistic mechanisms of ambiguity, on which syllepsis is based, are described and their communicative effect is hinted at. Further, zeugma is presented in short as an adjoining figure. Finally, syntactic and semantic varieties of syllepsis are approached with a closer look at the latter. Semantic syllepsis presents the core of this investigation and the word which governs the elliptic parallel construction is elaborated upon. Punning, as the communicative effect of syllepsis, is discussed in great detail. A broader definition of syllepsis following from this exposé is given at the end and is invigorated by a comparison to film montage.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar), course: Second Language Acquisition and Universal Grammar, language: English, abstract: Within the discourse of generative grammar it has been proposed that Universal Grammar (UG) can be seen as an innate structure that governs the course of learning a language. The domain of UG is often also referred to as the ¿principles and parameters framework¿. While principles can be seen as a set of rules (e.g. the linearity of language) that are applicable for all natural languages, certain parameters make up and have to be set according to different languages. As there is not much disagreement on the role of UG for the acquisition of a first language (L1), many researchers have discussed the question if and how UG constrains second language acquisition (L2A). A large amount of research has been conducted within the field of the acquisition of reflexives in L2. Earlier approaches explained the acquisition of reflexives in L2A as a resetting of the Governing Category Parameter (GCP). Other approaches accounted the cross-linguistic variation in interpreting domain and orientation of anaphors to different categories of anaphors, namely X0 or head reflexives and XP or phrasal reflexives. It was then hypothesized that interpretation of these reflexives in L2A can either be the consequence of movement in Logical Form or a result of parameter settings regarding the agreement (AGR) parameter resulting in a relativized SUBJECT. The aim of this paper is to give a short overview of the above mentioned approaches on the domain of reflexivity acquisition by presenting one study for each approach. The results of the different studies will be discussed with emphasis to the question to what extent they show evidence for the non-/availability of UG in L2A. Based on this, a suggestion is stated, that the relativized SUBJECT approach is most sufficient to explain UG-availability in terms of the Full Transfer/Full Access Hypothesis.

And in some points this opinion is right. There really is a specific political language used by the politicians to follow certain aims but this has not always to be disguise or circumscription. What many of the citizens simply ignore is the fact, that politicians are dependent from the mass. Without the public there would be no need for politicians. And the same goes for political discussions. Politicians don't argue with each other because they like it. It is always the fact that a political actor starts political relations with another actor and at the same time with the public. If two politicians talk to each other on the television this is always orchestrated for the people who watch the show. (see Dieckmann 1981: 265) The main reason for every politician to lie or to use special vocabulary is for the purpose of being convincing. This paper analyses the language used by politicians in certain situations to convince people of the correctness of their point of view, in its' roots, mainly based on the book Politically Speaking: The Pragmatic analysis of Political Language by John Wilson. The main focus of this paper is put to the question of the use of the pronominal forms ¿I` and ¿we` in political talk, under which conditions the one is used and when the other and what for. It is not arguable that politicians always have a reason for using ¿I` or ¿we` in different contexts, especially in written speeches that are planned and very well prepared. Also the difference between scripted and unscripted speeches will be touched in this paper. To employ the theoretical basis that is provided here, in the last section the famous "Sportpalast"-speech of Joseph Goebbels from 1943 will be analysed with regard to the use of different pronominal forms. The final summary shall bundle the gained information to a logical minimum and draw some conclusions from it. It will show if political use of speech is intentionally manipulating and disguising facts, especially in the example of Goebbels or if the use of language in politics does not differ in great parts from the day-to-day use at home.

To be, or not to be, that is the question - whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles,". (III,1) The question of "to be or not to be", which is in essence the question of identity, is a widely discussed and fundamental theme of life, a topic many authors have written about and many producers have made the central theme of Hollywood movies. The purpose of this essay is to discuss question of identity in postmodern American short stories. It will include a presentation of postmodernism in its contrast to modernism. Three short stories from different American authors will be discussed in regard to conflicts and development of identity: "Lost in the funhouse" by John Barth, "Saint Marie" taken from Louise Erdrichs "Love medicine" and "A Wife's Story" by Bharati Mukherjee. Special attention will be paid to the story of initiation.

Several studies could show that the systems are influencing each other and they can not be regarded as minor to argue for an autonomous development. Furthermore, there are different methods of predicting which grammatical domains will be influenced and the direction of influence. These are language internal factors, dominance or epiphenomena of speech production. Nevertheless, there are problems as some children did not show the predicted influence. Possible suggestion to the problem is a modification of the criteria already developed and an inclusion of the possibility of individual differences due to different learner types.

Master's Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1 (A), Cologne University of Applied Sciences (Institute for Automation Technology), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this master thesis project has been to study, operate and program the 32-bit 150MIPS TMS320F2812 DSP developed by Texas Instruments Inc. In addition, it has also been a goal to implement fast estimation techniques for control of resonant converters. For this purpose, PWM signals that are generated using this DSP are used. The demands on the system and the hardware to solve the problem were already decided when I started the work. The algorithms were programmed in C/C++ language, compiled, debugged and transferred to the DSP development board in a compiling and simulation tool (downloader), called CCS (Code Composer Studio v2), also provided by Texas Instruments. In the first chapters of this thesis I give general information about control systems, digital signal processors, digital signal processing and the DSP used in this work. The following chapters tell about PWM, how to configure the PWM outputs and some examples related with PWM signals are given. After a short review of series resonant converters, I presented the last example implemented in this project. I conclude with a summary and provide some hints of future work.
