Was hier vorliegt, in insgesamt zwei Stunden und 27 Minuten, kann, wer will, als eine einzige grosse Komposition hören. 32 Stücke aus 33 Jahren hat der Posaunist, Pianist und Komponist sowie auch Bandleader Christian Muthspiel hier versammelt: Von 1989 bis 2022 stammen die Aufnahmen. Aber die Stationen werden hier nicht etwa chronologisch durchwandert. Sondern die Dramaturgie dieser beiden CDs richtet sich nach Kriterien der Hör-Lust, und zwar derjenigen des Musikers selbst, aus zum Teil grosser zeitlicher Distanz heraus. Blechblasinstrumente heben zu Jodlern an. Ein E-Bass groovt zu einem Thema aus der Renaissance. Die Klänge einer Marimba, eines Vibraphons und eines Klaviers fügen sich zu einem schillernden Klangmosaik über einer zärtlich-sehnsüchtigen Melodie. Eine Geige und eine knarzende Posaune geben sich zünftig. Die Stimme eines Dichters imitiert rhythmisch das Rattern tödlicher Geschosse. Eine Parade immer kerniger werdender Dialekte marschiert im kantig-musikalischen Skandieren eines ständig wiederholten Satzes auf. Ein vielköpfiges Jazz-Orchester legt feine Klangschichten in melancholisch-doppelbödiger Schönheit übereinander. Ein Fender Rhodes Piano bohrt sich bluesig ins Gemüt.

John Field, a pupil of Muzio Clementi, was in his day a celebrated pianist, credited with almost legendary skill. The Irish piano virtuoso and composer is principally known for his “Nocturnes;” a genre later adopted by Chopin; yet the four piano sonatas in this volume also deserve the highest respect. Since no autographs of them survive, all the important prints issued during Field’s lifetime have been consulted for this Henle Urtext edition. Copies with extensive handwritten annotations by the composer have served as our primary source. Editor Robin Langley’s preface provides information about the sources of the sonatas, answers questions concerning rhythmic execution, and places Field in the historical context of the piano music of his time, making this edition especially valuable.

Bellini selbst war sich bewusst, dass er mit Norma etwas Aussergewöhnliches geschaffen hatte. Wesentlichen Anteil an dem andauernden Erfolg der Oper hatte zweifellos sein kongenialer Librettist Felice Romani. Er hatte erkannt, dass die tragende Dreiecksgeschichte der Vorlage von Alexandre Soumet für eine Vertonung wie geschaffen war: Norma zögert, den Galliern das Zeichen zum Aufstand gegen die Römer zu geben – sie liebt den Römer Pollione. Die Druidenpriesterin hat ihr Keuschheitsgelübde gebrochen. Sie ist die heimliche Geliebte des römischen Prokonsuls Pollione geworden und Mutter seiner beiden Kinder. Als Norma entdeckt, dass Pollione seine Liebe der jungen Adalgisa zugewandt hat, gibt sie das Signal zum Angriff. Am Ende besinnt sie sich, nimmt ihre Schuld an und rächt sich nicht an dem gefangenen Pollione. Anstelle von Adalgisa sühnt sie selbst den Bruch des Gelübdes auf dem Scheiterhaufen. Von Normas Liebe überwältigt, folgt ihr Pollione in den Tod. Wenn es die dramatische Situation verlangte, brach Bellini die typischen Belcanto-Konventionen, hob die Grenze zwischen Arie und Ensemble auf und definierte die Arienform neu: Normas berühmtes Gebet »Casta Diva« wurde zu einem der gross angelegten Frauenmonologe der Opernliteratur. Fein in die melodischen Bögen eingewoben, demonstrieren ihre Koloraturen keine eitle Sängervirtuosität, sondern berührende Emotionen. In ihrer Intensität vermittelt die Norma-Partitur dramatische Inhalte mit den ausgefeiltesten, gesangstechnischen Mitteln des Belcanto. Die Titelpartie in dem vorliegenden Mitschnitt aus dem Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona verkörpert die italienische Sopranistin Fiorenza Cedolins.

But in this recording with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) under its principal conductor Mariss Jansons, the work is introduced by an exquisite – and fitting – choral work: A contemporary (1982) 16-voice arrangement of a song by Mahler, “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen”; based on a poem by Friedrich Rückert and originally composed for voice and orchestra in 1901 – performed here by the superb Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Choir). The nickname “Resurrection” for Mahler’s “Second Symphony” is derived from the closing chorus of the last movement, in which Mahler set to music verses from Klopstock’s “Messias”. Although the symphony is a challenge to perform, due to the length of the work as well as the exceptionally large musical scoring, it has become part of the standard repertoire. The “Second Symphony” is a central work in Mahler’s oeuvre, a work whose Munich performance of 1900 brought him the long hoped-for recognition as composer.

Unique recordings made at two very special Ken Colyer concerts have been released for the first time on this edition: the recordings made in March 1987 at London's 'The 100 Club' - meeting place and home-from-home for almost all English hazz musicians - proved to be the last sound and film recording of the legendary Ken Colyer Jazzmen line-up before Cloyer died in 1988. A 'revival' session had already been recorded live at the 'Pizza Express' in 1986. My enthusiasm for Brahms goes back to my youth, and the piano concertos are largely responsible for it,? writes Sir András Schiff in a liner note for this remarkable new recording. It finds the great pianist reassessing interpretive approaches to Brahms in the inspired company of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. To fully bring out the characteristics of Brahms's music Schiff's choice of instrument is a Blüthner piano built in Leipzig around 1859, the year in which the D minor concerto was premiered. The historically informed Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment plays with the flexibility, attitude, and responsiveness of a chamber music ensemble, as they work without a conductor, listening attentively to each other. András Schiff's collaboration with the orchestra in a series of concerts was widely acclaimed: 'Brahms's First Piano Concerto was reborn thanks to the OAE's incisive playing and András Schiff's characterful phrasing?, The Guardian exclaimed. The musicians' mutual wish to recapture the experience led to the present double album, recorded in London in December 2019.
