Dans l'histoire de l'architecture, Francesco Borromini (1599-1667) occupe une position très particulière. Il est l'un des protagonistes majeurs de l'architecture du Seicento, et notamment du baroque romain. Artiste de la nouveauté, il déclarait ne pas être né pour être copiste tout en revendiquant une parenté avec Michel-Ange. Son oeuvre a fondamentalement changé le cours de l'architecture moderne.
