This piano concerto by Mozart presented here inaugurate an ambitious project at Henle Publishers: in the coming years many of the Salzburg master’s 23 piano concertos will be published in completely new Urtext editions. And none other than András Schiff is collaborating with us. His piano reductions are aimed at amateurs rather than professionals; his fingerings for Mozart’s solo part have been exquisitely fine-tuned and are inspiring; and where Mozart’s original cadenzas are missing, Schiff’s stylistically perfected ones have been included. In so doing we aspire to set a new precedent. The quality is not only guaranteed by András Schiff, but also by the Mozart scholars to whom Henle Publishers have entrusted their Urtext editions. Each work is edited by a specialist, according to predetermined editorial guidelines. First and foremost Mozart’s handwritten scores have been consulted, being the most important sources. In some cases these had not yet been available when preparing previous editions. Moreover, we know today that in addition to Mozart’s own manuscripts, early copies in parts and prints also contain important information regarding the musical text. A co-production with Breitkopf & Härtel, Mozart’s piano concertos are not only available as attractive and affordable piano reductions, there are also an accompanying Urtext conductor’s score, orchestral parts and a study score. This will ensure that this lavish new edition can be used in many different contexts: whether studying the solo part in a definitive Urtext edition, which reflects the latest research findings; or playing together with a second pianist, providing a piano reduction which not only sounds superb but is also easy to play; or studying and reading the pocket score and finally performing with an orchestra, using newly-prepared material. This is a truly fitting project inauguration for the Mozart Year 2006.

The handbook on logic which the private lecturer G. B. Jäsche published in 1800 at the behest of Kant drawing on his records and also on lecture notes quickly became an integral part of Kant's works. It has found its way into all the complete editions and has again and again been used to interpret the ›Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ (Critique of Pure Reason), which was written primarily with the logic as its guideline. Since the notes of Kant which Jäsche used were written over a period of about 40 years, his handbook reflects the fluctuations in Kant's thinking. Numerous contradictions contained in the text have their roots here. The circumstances described make a lexical interpretation of precisely this work necessary. The second volume of the Kant Index is the first attempt to provide an aid for a comparison of this nature. A completely lemmatized index of places where words can be found and concordance lines enable a quick overview of the text. Numerous separate indexes, a list of the reflections used by Jäsche as well as a list of typographical errors for Volume IX of the Academy edition provide further tools.

On the occasion of the 70th birthday of Gidon Kremer, violinist extraordinaire, G. Henle Publishers is issuing a special edition of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in collaboration with the Kronberg Academy. It comprises two editions, gathered together in an attractive slipcase: the piano score and violin part without annotations (also available as HN 326), and the “Kremer part”. The latter includes fingerings and bowings by Gidon Kremer. The musical text is followed by an essay by Kremer about recordings of the Beethoven Concerto, bearing the attractive title: “Searching for Ludwig”. And this is not all: the first-movement cadenza by the composer Victor Kissine, which Kremer has already played numerous times, is published here for the very first time. Louis Spohr’s concertos have long been a standard feature in the clarinet repertoire, but up to now they have suffered due to a lack of reliable editions. In order to fill this gap, G. Henle Publishers is now following its edition of the Concerto no. 1 in c minor (HN 995) with a critical edition of the Concerto no. 2 in E flat. This is the only one of Spohr’s four clarinet concertos in a major key, and its buoyant atmosphere and joie de vivre remain captivating – especially in the final, “alla polacca” movement. It is hard to believe that this is the first-ever Urtext edition of this concerto! For this edition, Ullrich Scheideler has consulted both the first edition of 1822, published in Leipzig, as well as an important early manuscript. A new, practical, easy-to-play piano arrangement of the orchestral accompaniment has been made by Christoph Sobanski. The orchestral parts may be hired from Breitkopf & Härtel.
