Die auf E.T.A. Hoffmanns Erzählung "Nussknacker und Mausekönig" basierende Geschichte um Verwandlung und Heldenmut hat Generationen von Kindern fasziniert und verzaubert. Im Mittelpunkt des Balletts steht Klara, die am Weihnachtsabend von ihrem Patenonkel Drosselmeyer einen Nussknacker geschenkt bekommt. Sie träumt sie von einer Schlacht zwischen den vom Nussknacker angeführten Spielzeugsoldaten gegen das Heer des Mäusekönigs. Mit ihrer Hilfe siegt der Nussknacker, der sich dann in einen Pr nzen verwandelt. Der Prinz reist mit Klara in das Reich der Süssigkeiten. Dabei geht es über den Tannenwald zum Schloss Zuckerburg, wo die dort residierende Zuckerfee zu Ehren ihrer Gäste ein Fest veranstaltet. Tschaikowsky hat diesen Stoff nach der Version von Alexandre Duma vertont, Marius Petipa schrieb das Libretto. Die Choreografie stammt von Lew Iwanow. Am 18. Dezember 1892 fand die Uraufführung im Mariinsky-Theater in St. Petersburg statt, knapp ein Jahr vor Tschaikowskys Tod. Im Zusammenwirken mit der durch Lev Ivanov inspirierten Choreographie und der opulenten Ausstattung dieser Inszenierung bietet sich dem Betrachter mit dieser Liveaufzeichnung aus dem Royal Opera House 2009 eine der schönsten und ideenreichsten Inszenierungen (Peter Wright) überhaupt.

A classic of The Royal Ballet, La Fille mal gardée was an immediate hit with the British public. Choreographed by Frederick Ashton in 1960, it is a highly lyrical and technically demanding take on the simple tale of ‘love prevailing’ which underpins this charming story.
