Giuseppe Verdi hatte seine Opernkompositionen eigentlich abgeschlossen, bis er das Libretto von Arrigo Boito basierend auf Shakespeares Schauspiel “Othello” in den Händen hielt. Die vorliegende Mailänder-Aufführung, inszeniert von Graham Vick, eröffnete 2001 die Scala-Saison und war zugleich ein grandioser Abschluss des Verdi-Jahres. In den Titelrollen überzeugen Plácido Domingo, Barbara Frittoli und Leo Nucci. Inspiriert durch die Dramen William Shakespeares, entwickelte der Komponist schliesslich mit “Macbeth” sein eigenes Musikdrama. Im Zürcher Opernhaus gelang 2001 eine überwältigende und kraftvolle Inszenierung von David Pountney unter der Leitung des damaligen Chefdirigenten Franz Welser-Möst mit Thomas Hampson, Paoletta Marrocu und Roberto Scandiuzzi. Von Shakespeares Stück “The Merry Wives of Windsor” adaptiert, sollte “Falstaff” Verdis letzte Oper und eine seiner wenigen Komödien werden. Die vorliegende Produktion wurde 2006 beim Maggio Musicale in Florenz unter dem Dirigat von Zubin Mehta aufgezeichnet. Regisseur Luca Ronconi brachte eine moderne Farce auf die Bühne, die sich in Bildern und sozialem Kontext am modernen Grossbritannien orientiert. His contemporaries Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini meant more to him than Beethoven, Liszt or Schumann. They influenced the songful lines of his piano music, and their coloraturas are reflected in its flow, its trills and cadences. At the castle of Chopin’s beloved George Sand, in Nohant in France, three singers, a pianist and an actress meet with the most knowledgeable experts on Bel Canto and Chopin of our time. For one whole week in late autumn they delve for Chopin’s opera experiences: his admiration for the great Bel Canto singer Giuditta Pasta, his friendship with Bellini and his relationship with Pauline Viardot, daughter of tenor Manuel Garcia and sister of Malibran, who, as pianist and composer, worked on Chopin’s Mazurkas for voice and piano. These Mazurkas, as well as pure piano compositions – are rehearsed and discussed in Nohant and, by means of mezzo-soprano Katerina Hebelkova and soprano Christiane Libor’s voices, unfold their songful potential.Great Bel Canto artist Vesselina Kasarova complements Chopin’s music with the sources of his inspiration by singing arias by Rossini and Bellini.

Since 1980, the “Rossini Opera Festival” takes place every year in Pesaro. It is dedicated to Gioachino Rossini’s multi-faceted body of opera work. John Gay (1685-1732), a genial poet and playwright with a talent for satire, got the idea for The Beggar’s Opera from his friend, the satirist Jonathan Swift, who had mentioned to him that “A Newgate pastoral might make a pretty sort of thing”. It was staged by the actor-manager John Rich (who introduced pantomime to England) and succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, making, it was said, “Gay rich and Rich gay”. In general, ballad opera, set among London’s criminal classes and full of satirical jibes about corruption in high places, suited English taste better than Handel’s heroic operas by the 1720s. Created specially for television, this Beggar’s Opera captures the quality and satiric edge of the Hogarth engravings which influenced Gay’s original version. The characters of this highly-spirited comedy of London low-life thrived on thieving, lechery and deceit: Peachum (Streatford Johns), the receiver of stolen goods, shops his clients when it suits him; Macheath, the highwayman, has married Polly Peachum (Carol Hall) but is promised to Lucy Lockit (Rosemary Ashe). Lucy tries to poison her rival, Polly; Peachum and Lockit can both profit from Macheath’s demise and so he is brought to the gallows through his lecherous exploits. Lust, greed and corruption abound in this exuberant piece of popular theatre. The music for this production has been arranged from the eighteenth-century folksongs of the original (selected by Johann Christoph Pepusch) by baroque specialists Jeremy Barlow and John Eliot Gardiner, who conducts The English Baroque Soloists, performing on authentic period instruments. Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who and star of the films including Tommy, McVicar and Lisztomania, heads a distinguished cast as the villainous hero Macheath.

Throughout his compositional work, Benjamin Britten did his bit to support young people with their musical education – one has only to think, for example, of works such as The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra: Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Henry Purcell op. 34, written in 1945. His Entertainment for Young People written in 1949 and entitled Let’s Make an Opera op. 45, is another example of this didactic approach to composition, although its goals lie beyond simply encouraging children and young people to discover the world of opera. Let’s Make an Opera is also a morality tale that condemns the abuse of children, particularly those suffering social deprivation – represented in this instance by Sam, an apprentice chimneysweep. Let’s Make an Opera is divided into three parts, the first two of which are conceived as pure drama and feature little in the way of musical interludes. In Act One, Mrs. Parsworthy tells a story she had once heard from her grandmother to the children in her care at Iken Hall. It is the tale of Sam, a young chimneysweep. The children are so fascinated by the story that they decide to turn it into an opera. Act Two shows them hard at work rehearsing for the performance. And Act Three, which is an independent entity and suitable for performance on its own, narrates the actual tale of The Little Sweep. In this film, the director Petr Weigl has reworked and enriched the two-part prologue to the story through the introduction of additional characters. Britten himself developed a great personal attachment to the work. In his own words, he associated its composition with “an indescribable feeling of happiness.”
