Inflation was a main cause for empires to fall. By lowering the metal content of the coin or nowadays with the issuance of an ever increasing amount of ¿paper currencies¿ backed by ¿nothing¿, a debasement of the currency was and is a direct consequence. With the debasement of the currency, people are deprived of the purchasing power of the currency. Before we look at the ramifications of inflation, a correct and distinct definition of the term inflation is required. The word inflation is derived from the Latin ¿inflare¿ and means to increase or to balloon.1 In this context it relates to the increase of money supply by continuing government issue of currency. Up until the 1940s the term inflation only referred to an increase in the money supply beyond the increase in goods and services during a given period of time.2 By this definition, the cause of inflation is easy to determine; namely the institution issuing the currency. From the 1940s through to the present day, the prevailing definition of inflation significantly varies from the historic definition. The standard definition of inflation today adopted by economists and the mainstream press is that inflation is an increase in prices. This change of the meaning of the term inflation is by no means harmless since it paved the way towards inflationism. As we will see later on in this study, inflation has been prevailing in the industrialized countries since World War I and has been exacerbated by the complete demonetisation of gold in 1971 as President Nixon closed the ¿Gold window¿. By focusing on the term inflation I will rely on the historic and the Austrian economic definition due to its longer period in use and its higher accuracy. The modern definition of inflation as simply rising prices looks more at the symptoms of monetary inflation and not at the cause. An understanding of the real cause of inflation is vital to an understanding of fixing it once it reappears.

The ancient faith is that of the Orthodox Church. Continuing that faith is a problem facing its multi-national members living in North America since the late eighteenth century. Specifically the problem centers on a single parish in Berkley, Michigan where second and third generation descendants of Middle Eastern immigrants are losing interest in the church and the cultural heritage of their parents. Orthodox Church development in North America, the Middle Eastern migration, problems of settlement, and adjusting to the American culture contribute to several images that trouble the parish but also provide insights into strategies for continuing the ancient faith.

The second half of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th century function like a microcosm of colonial and anti-colonial developments of the British Empire. In fact, the period proved crucial for the future development of the British Empire and its colonial policy in Africa as criticism from anti-colonialist currents was steadily increasing towards the end of the 19th century. It has been chosen because it covers the last years of the Victorian Era and the first ones of the Edwardian Era. The period marked the beginning of the heyday of imperialism with the Berlin Conference in 1884/1885 where Africa was partitioned among the European countries, and with its widest extension throughout the first years of the 20th century, but also the crisis of British imperialism in Africa und thus, played a decisive role in determining the images of the natives in Africa. Political painting in the post-factual age While postmodern painting has always been accompanied by the discussion about its end, it has at all times pointed to its most important characteristic: due to its discursive character, it is able to weave a never-ending network of representations. The same applies to the works by Katrin Plavcak (born 1970 in Gütersloh, grown up in Austria). Her non-impasto oil and acrylic paintings draw figurative references to Dix and Grosz, Magritte and Picasso, Höch and Lassnig, as well as the practice of naive painting, where perspective and spatial conditions are suspended while several narrative strands coexist. Katrin Plavcak purposefully examines the history of images originating from comics, cartoons, illustration and, quite broadly, from technical visual media. Clichés, distortions, trivializations, and spectacles, as produced by the media industry and whose logic is also quite seductive to art and its institutions, form an aesthetic fundus from which, in her own painterly language and in a highly qualified transformation process, she formulates her artistic point of view. Katrin Plavcak neither resorts to pathos nor any ideologically »correct« position, but rather directly pursues her interest in Dada or Surrealism, art movements where the achievements of photography, film and advertising, and, last but not least, popular magazine culture in methodical combination with montage and collage, have influenced the avant-garde concept. In addition, Katrin Plavcak is a great portraitist who knows how to psychologically pinpoint the characteristics of her found or invented figures with great painterly skill. Thus, if these days the post-factual age is heralded because we are inundated with information, to the point where it becomes meaningless to us, the opposite pole could be that kind of art.
