Jean-Nicolas Diatkine stammt aus einer Familie anerkannter Ärzte und betrachtet das Engagement für Andere als Grundlage seines Berufs. Es schien ihm unmöglich, auf diese Grundhaltung bei seiner Berufsausübung zu verzichten, weshalb er seine künstlerische Entwicklung stets als eine Rückkehr zu den wesentlichen künstlerischen Werten versteht, denen er sich in den letzten dreissig Jahren verschrieben hat. Gleichzeitig macht er das eingehende Studium und tiefere Verstehen des Narrativs der jeweiligen Komponisten zu einer absoluten Priorität und zu einem unverzichtbaren Schritt vor jeder öffentlichen Aufführung eines Werkes. Diatkine über Beethoven: Die Notwendigkeit für einen Künstler, die von ihm gespielten Werke verbal zu erläutern, könnte wie eine Versagenserklärung wirken, so als ob die Darbietung der Musik an sich nicht genüge, um das Stück verständlich zu machen. Goethes Verärgerung über Schuberts Vertonung seiner Gedichte entsprang derselben Kategorie, nur im umgekehrten Sinne: Goethes Ansicht nach war Musik in den Gedichten bereits enthalten. Ebenso schuf Beethoven eine so weite Klangwelt, so durchorganisiert, dass er – so wie im übrigen auch Bach – jeder Form der literarischen Ausdeutung widerstand, wissend, dass es dazu keinerlei Notwendigkeit gab – das Paradoxon der folgenden Präsentation.

Beethoven wrote his Piano Concerto No. 3 around 1800, at a time in which the ambitious composer had created his first important works in Vienna, such as the “Pathétique” Sonata and the “Moonlight” Sonata – personal works full of power and passion, with which he distanced himself from his mentor and model, Haydn. This performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of its principal conductor Mariss Jansons stars the distinguished pianist Mitsuko Uchida, who is known the world over for her outstanding interpretations of the piano works of Schubert, Mozart and Beethoven, as well as of 20th-century masters such as Schoenberg, Berg, Webern and Boulez. Richard Strauss wrote his tone poem for large orchestra “Ein Heldenleben” (“A Hero’s Life”) in 1898, shortly before he left Munich for the Berlin Court Opera, where he was appointed house conductor. In the imaginary hero whose eventful life is described in the work, the young Strauss apparently envisioned the freelance artist of his time, who was exposed to considerable hostility during the Wilhelminian era, just as Strauss himself in his early Munich period.

Hanna Shybayava was born in Belarus in 1979. A student of Naum Grubert, she won the 2001 YPF National Piano Competition and has attended masterclasses with Murray Perahia and Emanuel Ax. Her recital on this Brilliant Classics disc is of two of Schubert's greatest sonatas. The A minor Sonata D784 dates from 1823. The period from 1821 to 1825 saw Schubert start and abandon many sonatas and symphonies --struggling to establish his mature and individual voice. Many of these unfinished works provide a fascinating view into the mind of this intense and private artist. The huge torso of the C major Sonata D840 - consisting of the first two movements, half the scherzo, and a finale that breaks off without warning to nothing - is a prime example. The Seventh and Eighth Symphonies (the latter being the famous 'Unfinished'), though fragmentary, point the way to Schubert's mature style, free of the influence of Haydn and Mozart, and, most importantly a voice that was as unique and powerful as Beethoven's. The piano-writing is almost orchestral. It is unflashy, stark, and with constantly changing moods. The A major Sonata D959 was started and completed along with its companion sonatas D958 and 960 in September 1828. It is an austere work, and on a large scale, with a pensive menuetto in place of the traditional scherzo, and a brooding, wintry finale, obsessive almost in its gloom -- very much in the spirit of Winterreise. Less than two months after completing the work, Schubert was dead. Originally intended for dedication to Hummel, the three sonatas were not published until 1838, a year after Hummel's death. The publisher Diabelli dedicated them to Schumann. Schubert occupied himself intensively with the sonata form in 1818/19. The results, to put it like this, led to the creation of this piano sonata in A major, probably in summer 1819, thus at about the same time as the Trout Quintet. Not surprisingly, it exudes a serene spring feeling. One of Schubert’s major sonatas, the work imposes considerable technical demands on the performer, but can still be mastered by non-professional pianists.

Beethoven’s three Piano sonatas op. 2 were the first works in this genre to which he gave an opus number, thus signalling to the music world the special importance that he assigned to them. He wrote them during his first years in Vienna and, along with his op. 1 piano trios, they helped to establish his reputation as one of the most significant composers of his time. These three sonatas – all of them small masterpieces – are arranged in ascending order of difficulty and virtuosity. At the heart of this A-major Sonata is the well-known, profound Largo appassionato movement, whose staccato bass line is reminiscent of double bass pizzicati. It stands in stark contrast to the nimble Rondo-Finale, whose theme returns each time with ever more elaborate arabesques. Murray Perahia’s fingerings have been tried and tested over several decades of performing these works, and offer a new approach to these milestones of the piano repertoire.

This “little” D-major sonata is somewhat the pansy (or violet?) among Mozart’s eighteen piano sonatas. It is “little” in dimensions when compared to the two other sonatas in the same key of D major (K. 284, and especially K. 576). It is very seldom heard in concert; and in piano lessons, too, is played less frequently. Admittedly it is not enveloped by the tragic gloom of the Sonata in A minor K. 310, nor does it have a wonderfully heartfelt slow movement like the Sonata in C major K. 309, these being the two works with which it was printed in Paris in 1778. K. 311, however, is pianistically “worthwhile” in many regards: in the opening movement one can practice several standard technical challenges (hand-crossings, effervescent runs, parallel sixths, tremolos at large intervals, etc.). The slow movement (“Andante con espressione”) hones expressiveness, something that does not always come naturally to many keyboardists (a compositional trick also makes a surprise appearance at bar 25). With its lively 6/8 meter, the finale in turn recalls not only the veritable “Hunt Sonata” K. 576 but could almost have come from the solo part of a Mozartean piano concerto. All in all: a worthwhile challenge, this sonata, which sounds much harder than its technical demands require. More information

Franz Schubert’s three last piano sonatas were all composed in September 1828, two months before the composer’s premature death. These are the Sonatas in C minor (D. 958), B-flat major (D. 960) and A major (D. 959), the last of which is presented here in a separate edition. Strangely enough, this sonata was initially published (posthumously in 1796) as a violin sonata, a version that is not at all hard on the ears. If we didn’t have Mozart’s autograph manuscript of the piano sonata (albeit only in fragments), along with his entry in his own catalogue of works (Vienna, February 1789: “A sonata for piano solo.”); one might presume that this sonata in B-flat major existed as a genuine pair of twins (with and without violin accompaniment).

The great pianist Paul Badura-Skoda counts the first movement of this B-flat major sonata K. 333 as “among the most beautiful … in the piano literature.” And who would want to contradict him? What a pyrotechnic display of wonderful and freely vibrant melodies in the first movement, artfully coupled with pianistic runs and flourishes! The sublime slow movement (“Andante cantabile”) could pass as the piano reduction of a string quartet, while the concluding “Allegretto grazioso” is like the jaunty but subtle dance finale from an opera buffa. As we know today, Mozart composed this miraculous sonata in 1783 – previous Mozart scholarship missed the mark entirely with its much earlier date. It appeared in print a year later, interestingly in combination with the (relatively) early piano sonata K. 284 and the grandiose violin sonata K. 454. More information
