These choruses are not (or not entirely) the tub-thumping exercises in blatant jingoistic rabble-rousing that you might expect, but contain many moments of poetry that make them secular rivals to earlier works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov which draw from Russia's great Orthodox tradition of choral music. In Stalin's Russia such an option was closed to Shostakovich, of course, even had he wished to explore it, but instead he used the poetry of Revolutionary leaders and imbued it both with his own, bitter-sweet harmonic vocabulary while never losing sight of the powerful character of Russian choruses for whom he would be writing. One such, Moscow-based, performs the two cycles on this recording, and they naturally have the idiom, and language, under their skins. Other information: - Only available recording as a single issue of these works. - As an "obedient" Soviet artist, Shostakovich set texts of revolutionary poets to music. The result is vintage Shostakovich: under the blatant populist message of the text we hear a melancholy and tender heart. The choral arrangements of Russian Folk Songs derive inspiration from the rich Russian folk culture, and Russian Orthodox Chant (though of course in a hidden way, as it was forbidden by the authorities). - Excellent performances by Russian forces.

This performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of its principal conductor Mariss Jansons stars the distinguished pianist Mitsuko Uchida, who is known the world over for her outstanding interpretations of the piano works of Schubert, Mozart and Beethoven, as well as of 20th-century masters such as Schoenberg, Berg, Webern and Boulez. Richard Strauss wrote his tone poem for large orchestra “Ein Heldenleben” (“A Hero’s Life”) in 1898, shortly before he left Munich for the Berlin Court Opera, where he was appointed house conductor. In the imaginary hero whose eventful life is described in the work, the young Strauss apparently envisioned the freelance artist of his time, who was exposed to considerable hostility during the Wilhelminian era, just as Strauss himself in his early Munich period.

These days, the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is mainly associated with his later works. Born in 1935, he wrote 'avant-garde' works at first. In the nineteen seventies he increasingly found his inspiration in medieval religious music, both western and eastern European. This first transpired in his Für Alina for piano. It already has the telling low tempo and (two) layers. Pärt further extended his so-called tintinnabuli (i.e. bells) style in small-scale pieces like the different versions of Spiegel im Spiegel and Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinuschka. Although this last piece has 'classical' features as well. This CD shows an aspect of Arvo Pärt which is seldomly heard: small-scale chamber music works. As such this recording is a valuable addition to the material already available on the market.

Beethoven’s three Piano sonatas op. 2 were the first works in this genre to which he gave an opus number, thus signalling to the music world the special importance that he assigned to them. One of Chopin’s most radical compositions, the Scherzo in b minor, leaves very few listeners untouched. The main part, which is wild and full of brutal dissonances, frames an intimate Trio in which Chopin transcribes a Polish song for the piano with a magic touch. According to legend, the work was composed at the end of 1830 in Vienna, when Chopin had just left his homeland for good. The November uprising had broken out in Warsaw, and the composer alternated between wanting to revolt against fate and feeling inconsolably homesick. The revised edition of the Scherzo in b minor is available as a single edition in Henle Urtext for the first time – the Scherzi 2–4 are to follow, finally rounded off by the revised complete volume.

The composition cost him his sleep. In October 1842, when Schumann had finished his piano quintet in a short period of time, he was physically and emotionally drained. The work in no way reflects this, quite the contrary. “Full of strength and freshness” said Clara Schumann of the new composition, as well as “extremely brilliant and effective”. Even Richard Wagner added his voice to the great wave of admiration. Thus op. 44 soon became one of Schumann’s most successful compositions, which today is still a jewel in chamber music literature. If the quartet reminds one of a piano concerto with orchestra in string quartet format at times, this is explained by the fact that it was intended for Clara’s repertoire. The work was also dedicated to this brilliant pianist.

The variation genre occupied Beethoven his whole artistic life. Collected in the second volume of G. Henle Publishers’ complete edition of piano variations are compositions from his middle and later Vienna years written between 1799 and 1823.
