Founded in 1981, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century consists of approximately fifty-five musicians from all over the world. The Dutch conductor and recorder player Frans Brüggen, who died in 2014, had based the structure of his orchestra upon the famous ‘luxury’ orchestras that flourished in Mannheim, Paris and Vienna in the eighteenth century. The orchestra is specialised in the music of that era and the musicians play on period instruments or copies of them. This spectacular rendition of Beethoven’s „Symphony No. 3“; live recorded at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, has won them international acclaim. Beethoven originally dedicated the „Eroica“ (1804) to Napoleon, who at the time was re-drawing the map of Europe as comprehensively as this epic symphony was to re-define the architecture of music. It was only belatedly that the composer realised that ‘heroes’ with absolute political power easily turn into tyrants and tore up the dedication.

Sergei Nakariakov has broken through more than a few of the perceived boundaries framing the world of the trumpet in classical music. Dubbed “The Paganini of the trumpet” and “Caruso of the Trumpet”; Nakariakov has developed a unique musical voice, which is much more than a vehicle for astonishing virtuosity. His repertoire includes not only the entire range of original literature for the trumpet; but is continually expanding into broader territories, including many fascinating transcriptions, while he searches for ever new means of musical expression. At the same time, he has single-handedly brought the flugelhorn to prominence on the concert platform. The film presents the musician at his best but it also shows the victim of a soviet child prodigy biography. "Aufnahme" 1987 in der Alten Oper Frankfurt - Koproduktion mit dem BR "Zubin Mehta..." Im Musikleben seiner Epoche spielte der 1824 in Ansfelden geborene Anton Bruckner so gut wie keine Rolle. Seine Musik war wohl einfach zu weit entfernt von den Musizier- und Hörgewohnheiten seiner Zeit. Dabei wusste der Komponist Bruckner sehr genau, was er wollte und was nicht. Die "achte Sinfonie", seine dritte in der Tonart c-moll, komponierte er ab 1884/1885. Eine erste Überarbeitung des Werkes schloss er 1887 ab. Doch diese Fassung wurde von Hermann Levi, dem er die Partitur zuschickte, nicht zur Aufführung angenommen. Erst deprimiert, dann mehr und mehr durch die vor ihm liegende Aufgabe inspiriert, schuf Bruckner in den drei Folgejahren eine wesentlich komplexere, strukturell und instrumental reichere Neufassung. Anton Bruckners "achte Sinfonie" ist die letzte mit einem vollendeten Finalsatz und zugleich das Nonplusultra seines Schaffens.

Carl Maria von Weber composed the “Missa Sancta No. 1” in ocassion of the name day of King Friedrich August I of Saxony. Weber himself conducted the first performence in the Dresden Hofkirche in 1818. Thanks to the creation at the very same time it is also called “Freischützmesse”. More than 250 years later the rare performed work had a revival in the Basilika Waldsassen. Horst Stein, longtime principal conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and famous for his work at Bayreuth Festival, conducted a first class cast with the soloists Krisztina Laki, Marga Schiml, Josef Protschka and Jan-Hendrik Rootering. Founded in 1946, the Bamberg Symphony has become during the last 70 years not only the musical hub of the entire region, it's one of Germany's most-travelled orchestras, the first to tour abroad after the war, notching up more than 6,500 concerts in 500 cities and 60 countries worldwide. Arthaus Musik presents the performance of Haydn’s “Missa Sanctae Ceaciliae” conducted by Rafael Kubelík live from the Basilika Ottobeuren. The work was without doubt one of the highlights of the wonderful Kubelík era. Under his guidance the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks also became one of the world’s foremost Haydn orchestras. When the orchestra discovered the baroque Basilica of Ottobeuren as the perfect venue for sacred music of the classic-romantic repertoire, their concerts enjoyed huge popularity, leaving a lasting impression on those who experienced them at first hand.

Richard Wagner Tristan und Isolde, Vorspiel & Isoldes Liebestod Birgit Nilsson, Isolde Die Walküre, Erster Aufzug (Act One) Claire Watson, Sieglinde Fritz Uhl, Siegmund Josef Greindl, Hunding Ludwig van Beethoven Overture “Leonore III”; op.72a Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4 in G major, op. 58 Wilhelm Backhaus, piano The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Hans Knappertsbusch worked together for the fi rst time at the Salzburg Festival in 1929. Mozart’s Little Night Music, de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain and a Dance Suite by the composer Franckenstein formed the first half of the programme while Beethoven’s Eroica took up the second half. Although the orchestra and the conductor had never met before, Knappertsbusch rehearsed only the first part of the programme. He refused to rehearse Beethoven’s Eroica, saying, “You know the work, I know the score”. The violinist Otto Strasser remembers, “He radiated such confi dence on the evening of the concert that a rehearsal had indeed not been necessary”… This incident was characteristic for the relationship between the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Hans Knappertsbusch, which lasted for 35 years, giving 210 concerts and playing for innumerable performances at the Vienna State Opera. Although Knappertsbusch was born near Wuppertal in Westphalia in 1888, the conductor felt particularly at home in Vienna. When the National Socialists removed the somewhat defi ant Musical Director of the Munich State Opera from his post in 1936 in the middle of a performance and forbade him to conduct any further performances or concerts, Knappertsbusch took up a position as conductor at the Vienna State Opera, where Bruno Walter was Artistic Director at the time. As a result he had a particularly close relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which remained unchanged till the end of the war. After the Second World War Vienna continued to be the centre of his conducting activity - together with Munich and Bayreuth - and until shortly before his death in Munich in 1965, Knappertsbusch’s concerts were the annual highlights of the season not only for the orchestra but also for his many fans.
