"Charleroi is the second half of the Pittsburgh story. The Pittsburgh album was about the grandmother I knew. Charleroi is about the one I never did. My father was returned to the hospital as an infant, ill with whooping cough. He was left there for several months as an orphan. Finally, he was adopted by a kind doctor who became his father. Never knowing his birth family it was assumed that mystery would always remain. In 2015, after over 60 years of wondering and waiting, the family was finally found. Having been mistakenly told that my father died in infancy, he was never sought out by the remainder of his biological family. Sadly his mother passed away several years before having a chance to ever see her son again. Her name was Thelma and she was my grandmother. She was from Charleroi, Pennsylvania. Paganini composed 6 numbered concertos; the 6th of 1815 actually pre-dates No.1, which appeared in 1817. The Second concerto became one of his most famous works, and one he performed most frequently. The famous finale known as 'la Campanella' became an instant hit from the premiere in Naples in 1827. Later that year Pope Leo XII created Paganini a Knight of the Golden Spur, and his international stardom continued. His playing unsettled and astonished Liszt that he retreated to his hotel room for two weeks and seriously doubted if he could become as good a pianist as Paganini was violinist. Schumann claimed that it was hearing Paganini play that jolted him out of his chosen career as a man of letters to become a composer. Paganini encouraged the stories that he had sold his soul to the devil in order to play so fantastically -- such spin and hype was good for the box office. It did however result in the church refusing him burial in consecrated ground. Franz Liszt wrote an intensely personal and moving obituary when Paganini died in 1840. The Fifth concerto is from 1830, and for many years was un-performable as all Paganini left was the solo part and some vague ideas as to scoring. It was reconstructed and scored by Frederico Mompellio who also scored the Sixth concerto in the 1970s from the violin and guitar reduction that had survived. The Fifth contains all the pyrotechnics expected of a concerto by Paganini, but the slow movement is an especially moving and unadorned Andante. Paganini refused to publish any of his concertos, thus preserving control over them at a time when there was no copyright law. The first two concertos were first published in the 1850s, over 10 years after his death. Just one year after his successful and highly acclaimed comeback at the Vienna State Opera he returned to the same opera stage where he made his brilliant debut in 197, as a thirty-year-old: the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg. This recital was staged a second time and was also relayed live to a giant screen at the city’s Domplatz – a clear indication of the enormous affection with which he was received by the Salzburg public. The Spanish tenor repays such lively interest with an exclusive programme that includes no less than 23 songs and five encores. Whereas the first half of the evening was divided into three parts – works from the Italian baroque, French mélodies by Jules Massenet and canzoni by Francesco Paolo Tosti, the second half consisted entirely of Spanish works and focused principally on the songs of Manuel de Falla. And if not the final encore of the evening, certainly its crowning moment is the song we have come to associate with José Carreras as his vocal trademark – Granada by Agustìn Lara.

In France, where the elements of oratorio and the influence of Wagner were not well received, the first performance would not follow for another 13 years. “Samson et Dalila” ranks among the masterpieces of 19th century French Opera - and among the showpieces favored by the Argentine tenor José Cura. In the recorded production he saw himself celebrated on stage as a unified three-in-one: eponymous hero, director and stage designer.

Ihre Methode nennen sie ‘Zero Gravity’; ein musikalischer Urzustand, den sie im Zusammenspiel immer wieder beschwören und der den Ausgangspunkt für ihre Erkundungsreisen in musikalisches Neuland darstellt. “The Language of the Unknown” konfrontiert den grossen Saxophonisten und seine Band mit einer Konzertaufnahme, die am 3.
