This term characterises the unparalleled close Anglo-American relations during the Second World War and in the time thereafter. The shared perception that Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union constituted major external threats to their well-being bound the societies and leaderships of Great Britain and the United States together. The looming menace ceased to exist after the break-up of the Soviet Union and the demise of Communism, and for several authors so did the raison d¿être of the Special Relationship as well. It was more however that brought these two countries together than the shared perception of a communist threat. Why is it that "neither country has fully adjusted its mind to thinking of the members of the other society as foreigners", and that Americans still refer to Britain as the "mother country" every now and then? Why do certain authors call Britain the "fortified outpost of the Anglo-Saxon race" or the "unsinkable aircraft carrier"? And is it just by chance that fictional author George Orwell calls Britain "Airstrip One" and associates it with North America in his novel "1984"? Is it a coincidence or are these - admittedly vague - expressions signs of subtle yet overarching bonds between the two countries? This work will analyse and discuss various aspects of Anglo-American relations. The apparent cooperation in the fields of foreign and security policy will be assessed, as well as the more disguised realm of military and intelligence collaboration. Following is a chapter about two aspects that dominate our time, economy and business in the Anglo-American relationship. The last chapter attempts to illuminate the obscure field of "private" relations between the Anglo-American nations, as well as the importance of the personal relationships between the individual Presidents and Prime Ministers. For a better understanding of Anglo-American Affairs the common backgrounds of the two countries are assessed historically, culturally and in terms of language. The question or the leitmotif on which this work is be based asks whether the concept of a Special Relationship in current Anglo-American relations is still a de facto reality or just a myth, that lingers on from the shared experience of the two World wars: Does the weary British Lion still enjoy a remarkably "special" relationship with the almighty American Eagle?

This book looks into areas in which the relationship between environmental policy and trade policy at the international level is unresolved and subject to debates and negotiations. Most controversial is the treatment of standards on processes and production methods (PPMs) when a product is traded. Should the way a product is manufactured or the resources being exploited in this process be considered when allowing market access - although the product itself does not exhibit these information? According to the principles and rules of the World Trade Organization the answer is "yes". Exemptions, yet possible, are not clearly defined and need case-by-case legal judgements in order to become more applicable. This book argues that international environmental agreements deliver the necessary background for environmentally motivated trade measures but still lack the legal power to be considered ex ante. The only viable policy instrument that helps to make the hidden environmental effects of traded goods more transparent are labels and certificates. Thus, the book focuses on three aspects: First, how do the multilateral environmental agreements which explicitly include trade measures relate to WTO rules? Second, could the integration of negotiations in the two policy fields induce a more efficient outcome with respect to trade rules and to environmental protection? And third, could ecological labels deliver a solution to potential trade rule conflicts inherent to different national treatment of so-called like products which differ in their production processes?

The central paradox of the contemporary world is the simultaneous presence of wealth on an unprecedented scale, and mass poverty. Liberal theory explains the relationship between capitalism and poverty as one based around the dichotomy of inclusion (into capitalism) vs exclusion (from capitalism). Within this discourse, the global capitalist system is portrayed as a sphere of economic dynamism and as a source of developmental opportunities for less developed countries and their populations. Development policy should, therefore, seek to integrate the poor into the global capitalist system. The Global Development Crisis challenges this way of thinking. Through an interrogation of some of the most important political economists of the last two centuries Friedrich List, Karl Marx, Leon Trotsky, Joseph Schumpeter, Alexander Gerschenkron, Karl Polanyi and Amarta Sen, Selwyn argues that class relations are the central cause of poverty and inequality, within and between countries. In contrast to much development thinking, which portrays 'the poor' as reliant upon benign assistance, this book advocates the concept of labour-centred development. Here 'the poor' are the global labouring classes, and their own collective actions and struggles constitute the basis of an alternative form of non-elitist, bottom-up human development.

This thesis presents a study of the relationship between the circannual reproductive pattern of tropical female equines and environmental factors believed to influence reproduction such as climate, nutritional status and management. Reproductive activities of jennies and mares (as measured by follicular activities, manifestation of oestrus and incidence of ovulation) were studied using serial ultrasonography, observational study and progesterone assay through three distinctly different seasons. Data were collected on nutritional status, management systems and climate to establish relationships with reproductive pattern. Results are presented in detail in tabulations, figures, and graphics. The findings are discussed and summarized with conclusive remarks. Recommendations on future study prospects are also given.
