Die Länder Nordafrikas gehören zum arabischen Sprach- und Kulturraum, und so finden sich in ihrer Musik mehr Verbindungen zur orientalischen Welt als zum Rest des afrikanischen Kontinents. Orientalische Melodien klingen für das westlich geprägte Gehör vor allem deshalb so fremd, weil sie sich nicht des uns bekannten Tonsystems bedienen – der zwölf Halbtöne umfassenden Oktave –; sondern viele Zwischentöne verwenden. Die Stimmen modulieren in feinsten Abstufungen und auch die traditionellen arabischen Saiteninstrumente werden in dieser charakteristischen Weise gespielt. Die soundtrip-CD zeigt, dass sich die Klangwelten Nordafrikas – im Kern sind dies die Länder Marokko, Algerien und Tunesien – auf faszinierende Art mit modernen Beats und gefälligen Harmonien verbinden lassen und sogar eingängige Popsongs dabei entstehen können. Die musikalische Reise beginnt also in recht gewohnten Sphären, dann bewegt man sich immer weiter von Europa weg. Schliesslich zeigen tiefe, dunkle Trommelfiguren, dass Schwarzafrika nicht allzu weit entfernt ist. Doch vor allem ist es die Wüste, die die Musik Nordafrikas prägt. In der kargen, weiten Landschaft verzichtet man auf ein grosses Orchester und benutzt das minimalistische Instrumentarium, das sich ins Nomadenleben unter freiem Himmel am besten einfügt: kleine Trommeln, Tamburine, Tongefässe, Zupfinstrumente und vor allem die Stimme.
