Johann Pachelbel, born in Nuremberg in 1653, a generation before Bach, is one of Southern Germany’s most important post-Reformation organ composers. His compositions were already widely known at the time. The most popular work today is probably the canon with ensuing gigue in D major. The canon – according to the source “a 3 Violinis con Basso c.” – is built up over an ostinato bass whose two bar figure is repeated a total of 28 times. The following short gigue is also in a strict contrapuntal style. It is not known when the work was composed. As with most of his other chamber music works, Pachelbel might have composed it during his time in Thuringia between 1677 and 1695. This pleasing work is also popular with amateur ensembles.

His cello duets were born out of the desire to create works that combine beauty, technical brilliance and a great sense of fun. A vivid imagination comprises the suites that make up Cours méthodique de duos. The works contain much musical parody, containing references to mountain choruses and funeral processions, among others, and imitating - with the cello - the sounds of other orchestral instruments, such as the French horn. These works also show off Offenbach's sheer knowledge of music, with nods to the styles of Verdi and Paganini, and the compendium as a whole takes into account the technical growth of the performer without restricting the formal structure of the music. Performing the works are acclaimed Italian cellists Andrea Noferini and Giovanni Sollima. Noferini originally studied with the great violinist Arthur Grumiaux, and his discographical successes include 'CD of the month' from Naxos; Sollima, also a composer by profession, received a 5-star review from Amadeus for his recording of Neapolitan Cello Concertos on the Glossa label. We worked out the following ten fairy tales as meditations: Sleeping Beauty – Paternal overprotection Frog King – Fatherly heteronomy Hansel and Gretel – Initiation for boys Mother Hulda – We are all one The wolf and the Seven Young Goats – Total self-overtaxing Rapunzel – The meaning of life Clever Else – Anticipatory obedience Puss in Boots – Through "having nothing" to be someone The Crystal Ball – Good and Bad – mirrors of each other The drummer – The Beat of the Heart It quickly became clear that this was no ordinary storytelling hour. The fairy tales and the philosophical questions we asked ourselves worked on a level far below thinking skills. We grasped ourselves at the level of a thinking heart and conscious feelings. Even in everyday life, it became clear who followed the path of a "Sleeping Beauty" or that of a "Puss in Boots." This experience intensified from meditation evening to meditation evening. Processes of "letting things go" took place in a peaceful mind, and what remained was a feeling of relaxation. The sound of Thomas Horwaths' voice and the gentle swinging of the harp strings form a unit that opens the portal for reflection within.
