Die Band, die sich nach dem gleichnamigen Song von Leonard Cohen benannte (oder, je nach Quelle, auch nach einem katholischen Nonnen-Orden), fand schon 1980 in Leeds zunächst als Duo zusammen, als Eldritch im F-Club den Gitarristen Gary Marx kennenlernte. Die 1000er-Auflage ihrer Debütsingle "Damage Done / Watch / Home Of The Hit-Men" war nach gleich zwei Einsätzen bei Radio-Legende John Peel bald fast komplett vergriffen. Für Live-Auftritte und weitere Singles und EP’s wurden der Gitarrist Ben Gunn und der Bassist Craig Adams angeheuert. Doch erst nachdem Gunn durch Wayne Hussey ersetzt wurde, konnten die Sisters Of Mercy ihr erstes Album in Angriff nehmen. Hussey trat auf "First And Last And Always" auch als Autor in Erscheinung. Viel kopiert, doch nie erreicht: Ob der klaustrophische Auftakt "Black Planet", die Melancholie von "No Time To Cry", das treibende "Possession" oder das abschließende, gut 7-minütige Epos "Some Kind Of Stranger", das schnell zur Liebes-Hymne der Szene in schwarz avancierte - "First And Last And Always" klingt so definitiv wie es der Albumtitel verspricht, zumal in dieser aktuellen Version. Denn während die bisher erhältliche CD auf einer minderwertigen Master-Kopie basierte, wurde jetzt erstmals von den Multitracks remastered. Dazu gibt es sechs B-Seiten wie "On The Wire" und "Bury Me Deep" sowie als bisher unveröffentlichte Aufnahme eine frühe Version von "Some Kind Of Stranger". Nach diesem Triumpf erwies sich das Line-Up der Sisters Of Mercy allerdings als nicht stabil. Zunächst ging Marx, wenig später auch Hussey und Adams, die bald The Mission gründen sollten. Andrew Eldritch, inzwischen nach Hamburg gezogen, konnte sich weiterhin auf Doktor Avalanche verlassen, rekrutierte mit Patricia Morrison (ex-Gun Club) eine neue Bassistin und überraschte auf dem nächsten Album "Floodland" mit wagnerianischen Chören und einer üppigen Rock-Produktion. Unter den vier Bonus-Tracks findet sich die bisher unveröffentlichte, lange Version von "Never Land", das auf "Floodland" nur als Fragment auftaucht. Wer nun geglaubt hatte, Andrew Eldritch würde es sich bequem machen und das nun auch kommerziell erfolgreiche Konzept einfach ein bisschen variieren, sah sich getäuscht. Mit den neuen Mitstreitern Andreas Bruhn (Gitarre), Tony James (Bass; Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Generation X) und Tim Bricheno (Gitarre; All About Eve) kreierte er 1990 für "Vision Thing" einen gitarrenlastigen Techno-Rock, der in den Clubs für Furore sorgte. Der Titelsong wurde ein Dancefloor-Hit, auch die Single "Doctor Jeep" und "Detonation Boulevard" kultivierten ein ähnliches Feeling. "More" und "I Was Wrong" als cleverer Schlussakkord sind weitere Höhepunkte auf "Vision Thing". Mit "Ribbons" und "Something Fast" sind auch zwei Live-Versionen im Bonus-Teil der Neuauflage vertreten.

Unique recordings made at two very special Ken Colyer concerts have been released for the first time on this edition: the recordings made in March 1987 at London's 'The 100 Club' - meeting place and home-from-home for almost all English hazz musicians - proved to be the last sound and film recording of the legendary Ken Colyer Jazzmen line-up before Cloyer died in 1988. A 'revival' session had already been recorded live at the 'Pizza Express' in 1986. This recordeing features Colyer performing skiffle - the music he loved - and other music styles together with former band members. Both the DVD boasting rare concert footage and the audio CD featuring popular Colyer titles present a very special piece of jazz history - the man who not only made New Orleans jazz popular in post-war Germany but also throughout Europe: Ken Coyler.
