Essay from the year 2002 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, grade: 1 (A), University of Kent (Kent Law School), language: English, abstract: The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians over the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza is one of the most complicated conflicts in the world. Attempts to resolve the conflict have failed in the past and a resolution seems unlikely to emerge in the near future. Partly, this is due to the fact that the situation is extremely complex and the conflict very old. History, politics and international law together with religion, nationalism and pride are entangled to form this conflict. For both sides the conflict has reached an emotional level where belief is more important than rational decisions. A lot has been written about the Israel-Palestine conflict and in recent years more and more critique of Israel has emerged. This is particularly interesting as usually every criticism of its actions or policies is turned down by Israel as anti-Semitism. One thus has to be extremely careful when writing about Israel although international law seems to be relatively clear about the 1967 occupation of Gaza and the West Bank. In order to examine the legality of the occupation, this paper will discuss the situation from both angles and look at the sources of international law relevant to this case. These are the Charter of the United Nations in general and the United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 in particular. In addition, customary international law has developed to a jus cogens, prohibiting the use of force at all for settling international disputes. Finally, this paper shall conclude that any justification of the occupation is doubtful and there is little evidence in international law that might legitimise Israel¿s actions. And even if the initial occupation could be legitimised under Article 51 of the UN Charter as an act of self-defence, the prolonged occupation would still lack any legal basis.

This is mainly due to the fact that American music is a worldwide predominant cultural reality. Black American music with its inherent linguistic characteristics, by the same token, looms large within that heritage. In this paper I will commence with a description of the term ¿Ebonics¿ and some information on the scientific state of affairs concerning its origins. Then I will proceed to some phonological aspects and conclude with a short look at its grammatical structure and idiosyncrasies. African-American English, the linguistic variety spoken by many African Americans in the United States of America, is a system with specific rules for combining sounds to form words, phrases and sentences. The first researchers who took an interest in this called it ¿Non-Standard Negro English¿, ¿Negro dialect¿ or ¿American Negro speech¿. However, because of the growing objections to the term Negro, other terms had to be found ¿ parallel to the changes ¿ in referring to black people. But even though the terms ¿African-American Vernacular English¿ (AAVE), ¿Black communications¿, Black dialect¿, ¿Black English¿, ¿Black Vernacular English¿, ¿African American language¿, ¿African American English¿ and, as Stanford Afro-American Linguist John Baugh named it, ¿Black Street Speech¿ (Baugh, 1983: 11), have all been used to label this variety over the past forty years, the word ¿Ebonics¿ (a blend of ebony and phonetics that was created in 1973 by a group of black scholars) is probably the most popular one today. This essay is to be understood as a brief survey on its grammatical and linguistic features.

(III,1) The question of "to be or not to be", which is in essence the question of identity, is a widely discussed and fundamental theme of life, a topic many authors have written about and many producers have made the central theme of Hollywood movies. The purpose of this essay is to discuss question of identity in postmodern American short stories. It will include a presentation of postmodernism in its contrast to modernism. Three short stories from different American authors will be discussed in regard to conflicts and development of identity: "Lost in the funhouse" by John Barth, "Saint Marie" taken from Louise Erdrichs "Love medicine" and "A Wife's Story" by Bharati Mukherjee. Special attention will be paid to the story of initiation.

Nowadays, English is the world language, influencing each and every single aspect of the daily and professional lives of millions of people on an international scale. The metaphor of the Global Village often represents the ubiquitous process of globalisation ¿ a phenomenon that has shaped the existence of mankind in the last couple of decades. Communication in all areas is ensured mostly through the use of the English language. It is remarkable, though, that English is only in the fourth place in terms of native speaker ranking and that its proportion is decreasing steadily. Yet what makes English so important is its use as a lingua franca ¿ an international language that is used for communication by speakers of different languages. Estimates claim that about 1 billion people ¿ that is about one sixth of the world population ¿ have at least some knowledge of English and in most countries it has become one of the basic necessities in professional life. Does this development have any influence on the way we as future professionals explore, describe and ¿ above all ¿ teach the English language? Do native speakers still ¿own¿ English or is it rather ¿Globish¿, ¿Franglais¿ or ¿Denglisch¿ that should be taught? In this term paper I aim to offer some answers to these questions and examine different theories of teaching English as a global language. I will begin with a short chapter about the global spread of English and continue by discussing the difference and competition between traditional language standards and the new role of English as an international language. I will then briefly describe some features of ¿Global English¿ before I will deal with my main point ¿ the future of English teaching. Here, I will at first describe the characteristics of the traditional methods ¿ English as a foreign language (EFL) and English as a second language (ESL) ¿ and then have a closer look at two newer models ¿ Basic Global English (BGE) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). I will conclude this paper by trying to postulate a realistic future of English language teaching ¿ in schools as well as universities ¿ by considering a variety of different scientific proposals.
