These choruses are not (or not entirely) the tub-thumping exercises in blatant jingoistic rabble-rousing that you might expect, but contain many moments of poetry that make them secular rivals to earlier works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov which draw from Russia's great Orthodox tradition of choral music. In Stalin's Russia such an option was closed to Shostakovich, of course, even had he wished to explore it, but instead he used the poetry of Revolutionary leaders and imbued it both with his own, bitter-sweet harmonic vocabulary while never losing sight of the powerful character of Russian choruses for whom he would be writing. One such, Moscow-based, performs the two cycles on this recording, and they naturally have the idiom, and language, under their skins. Other information: - Only available recording as a single issue of these works. - As an "obedient" Soviet artist, Shostakovich set texts of revolutionary poets to music. The result is vintage Shostakovich: under the blatant populist message of the text we hear a melancholy and tender heart. The choral arrangements of Russian Folk Songs derive inspiration from the rich Russian folk culture, and Russian Orthodox Chant (though of course in a hidden way, as it was forbidden by the authorities). - Excellent performances by Russian forces.

Franz Liszt arranged numerous works by other composers for his instrument, in particular excerpts from the operas by his friend and son-in-law Richard Wagner. He turned to “The Flying Dutchman” twice: alongside Senta’s ballad he also made a brilliant transposition of the spinning chorus (“Summ und brumm, du gutes Rädchen”) from Act 2 for the piano. His “Spinning Song” bubbles over with virtuosic brilliance and has to this day remained one of his best-loved transcriptions. When preparing our Urtext edition, we were also able to consult the autograph score in Weimar and the composer’s own revisions in the archives of the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel.

Combining a piano concerto and a cantata in one work is an undertaking that requires true mastery. Ludwig van Beethoven succeeded in this with his “Fantasy for piano, chorus and orchestra” in C minor op. 80, composed in 1808. Since the melody of the “Ode to Joy” from the finale of his Ninth Symphony can be heard here “in ovo”; the Choral Fantasy is also referred to as the “Little Ninth”. This score edition of the work is supplemented in our handy study edition by “Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt” (“Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage”) op. 112 and other short works for chorus and orchestra (opp. 118, 121b, 122, WoO 95). Ludwig van Beethoven composed his first-ever mass setting in 1807, to a commission from Prince Nikolaus II Esterházy: the Mass op. 86 for soloists, chorus and orchestra. The occasion was the celebration of the name day of the Prince’s wife. In the temporal proximity of such famous works as the Fourth Piano Concerto, the Violin Concerto, and the Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, he here created a work of an entirely different nature. He informed his publisher that he believed he had treated the text of the Mass “like it has seldom been treated”. This study score reproduces the full musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition. The sources consulted for this edition are presented in detail in the preface and the critical report.

Mozart's last work, the Requiem Mass in D minor K626, receives a strong performance from the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Mozart specialist Sir Colin Davis in a classic recording made in 1984. Popular legend has it that the Requiem was commissioned by a mysterious stranger, fuelling Mozart's obsession that the piece was his own Mass. However the probable truth is much less dark, that one Count Walsegg, who had a well-known penchant for commissioning works which he attempted to pass off as his own, commissioned it upon the death of his wife. Mozart died in 1791, before completing the piece. It was later completed by one of his students, Franz Süssmayr, at the request of Mozart's wife Constanze. This live recording from the Herkulessaal in Munich features Sir Colin Davis conducting the Bavarian Radio Symphony Chorus and Orchestra with the outstanding Peter Schreier and Edith Mathis as well as ever-popular Welsh bass Gwynne Howell.

Baritone Matthias Goerne, soprano Chen Reiss and cellist Eric Picard come together at Paris's renowned Salle Pleyel for a concert of Faure's works for chorus and orchestra. They are joined by the Orchestre de Paris under the baton of its new musical director, the Grammy Award-winnig conductor Paavo Järvi.
