On July 7th 1980 Marvin Gaye faced a predominantly jazz loving audience at the 14th Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Even though the festival featured some of the most celebrated artists in the jazz world, Motown's premiere soul man was awarded one of the warmest welcomes. Marvin opens his set with a funk fortified rendition of his 1977 chart topper "GOT TO GIVE IT UP", instantly creating an irresistible groove that must have converted many doubters in the crowd. Dass Suzanne Vega mehr war als eine Neo-Folk-Sängerin ist, unterstreicht ihr abwechslungsreicher Auftritt beim Montreux Festival 2004.Als Susanne Vega im Sommer 2004 beim renommierten Montreux Jazz Festival auftrat, lag ihr Debütalbum "Suzanne Vega" beinahe 20 Jahre zurück. Als das Album 1985 mit der Hitsingel "Marlena On The Wall" auf den Markt kam, markierte es den Beginn einer Neo-Folk-Bewegung. Plötzlich tauchten von überall Sängerinnen wie Tracy Chapman oder Shawn Colvin auf, die nur mit einer akustischen Gitarre auftraten. In Vega steckte jedoch mehr. So nahm sie eine Dance-Version ihres Acapella-Stückes "Tom's Diner" im Jahr 1990, damals von dem Projekt DNA in die weltweiten Charts gebracht, zum Anlass, mit ihrem nächsten Album, "99.9 Fahrenheit", selbst in elektronische Territorien vorzudringen. Aus all diesen Erfahrungen speiste sich ihr Auftritt in Montreux, wo sie mit einer kleinen Band um ihren langjährigen Bassisten Mike Visceglia auftrat, einem Gitarristen und einem Drummer, die sich jedoch sehr zurückhalten. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Songs, die Suzanne Vega sehr persönlich und mit autobiographischen Ansagen vorstellt. Mal steht sie wie bei "Gypsy" ganz allein auf der Bühne, mal groovt die Rhythmusgruppe wie beim selten gespielten "Calypso" mächtig los. Überraschend sind auch die Coverversionen, die sie für das Montreux-Konzert ausgesucht hat: eine intime Version von "Behind Blue Eyes" von The Who und der alte Jazz-Standard "Have You Met Miss Jones". Noch persönlicher und eindringlicher sind die drei Songs von ihrem Montreux-Gastspiel aus dem Jahr 2000, als nur Bassist Visceglia der kreativen Singer/Songwriterin zur Seite stand.

Ray Charles war einer der wahren Pioniere des Souls. Geboren in Georgia im Jahre 1930, gehörte er zu den ersten Musikern, die Gospel, Rhythm'n'Blues und Jazz miteinander mischten und so eine völlig neue Form schwarzer Popmusik, den sogenannten Soul, kreierten. Ray Charles hatte seinen ersten Hit bereits in den frühen Fünfzigern und war auch noch zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts in den Charts vertreten. Sein Tod durch ein Leberleiden im Juni 2004 wurde in grossen Schlagzeilen in aller Welt betrauert. Dieses Konzert wurde am 19. Juli 1997 beim Montreux Jazz Festival gefilmt und zeigt Ray Charles mit seinem Orchester, angeführt von Saxophonist Al Jackson und natürlich The Raelettes. Das Set umfasst viele seiner beliebtesten Stücke wie etwa "Shadows Of My Mind", "Busted", "Georgia On My Mind", "Angelina" und dem englischen Nr.1-Hit "I Can't Stop Loving You".
